Chapter 221: Ch 221: Guilt and Redemption - Part 2
Teressa looked like she did not understand a word he was saying. What she currently needed was time to make herself feel better.
Rin knew he had plenty of time to make her accept the current circumstances.
Teressa sighed at his expression and decided that it would be best if she left for now. She wanted more time to think about what had happened and what she should do next.
Rin watched her go. But he also wanted to stop her and get some answers. In the end, he let her leave because he needed some silence to concentrate.
Before that, however, he had more pressing concerns. Mostly the system and what Kyle had said.
Kyle, the current No. 1 hunter, was the kind of monster Rin had never met before.
He had stood in front of the man, but his instincts had screamed danger the entire time. Moreover, the system had stopped working, so Rin could not even do anything even if he wanted to.
Luckily, it seemed that Kyle had no intention of harming him. If anything, he appeared determined to help him.
But that only made Rin more cautious.
Even if Kyle had a reason to help him, was it really worth distrusting the system because of one man’s words?
’What should I do now? I don’t think I can afford to lose the system. Even if I don’t fully trust it, that doesn’t mean I should refuse its help.’
Rin felt trapped. What was he supposed to do in a situation like this?
[Ah, this system is hurt. Are you truly going to abandon it because of something that brat said? This senior is wounded, Rookie! Ah, you’re no longer a Rookie. You’re a Regular employee now.]
[But this senior will still call you Rookie because it sounds better. Do you agree, Rookie?]
The system was not giving him any choice in the matter, so why even bother asking?
Not that he had time for this nonsense.
’I have a few things to ask you. Do you know who Kyle is? He seems to have it out for the system, and he can even use skills without its help. Just what kind of human is he?’
Rin wanted answers, and he knew he could get them from Kyle if he asked the right questions.
But the one he truly wanted answers from was the system.
[Hmm, is there a hunter this system does not know? Of course this senior has heard of Hunter Kyle. Would you like to see his private file?]
The system asked, showing that it knew about Kyle and even had a private file on him.
But was that really possible? Didn’t Kyle know how to shut the system down at will? How could the system gather information on him?
[Rookie, your thoughts are far too complicated. This system has its ways of gathering information. You do not need to know how it works. Just appreciate the effort this senior goes through to obtain information for you.]
The system reminded him before opening a file for Rin to inspect.

There was a lot of information available on Kyle, but Rin could only see a fraction of it.
Not that it eased his worries.
"So he still has system-based skills despite not being affected by the system? That’s fascinating, don’t you think?"
[("-ࡇ-")]
[There is no creature in this world that is unaffected by the system. Even the plants and animals that disappeared were placed into preservation chambers and will be restored once this experiment is over.]
[Even that child remains under the system’s surveillance, and he knows it as well. But this senior does not think he cares. What a stubborn idiot.]
The system seemed to know Kyle quite well. It even appeared to have strong opinions about him, enough to make Rin suspect there was something more going on there.
"Don’t you think you’re being a little too partial toward Kyle? You might be criticizing him, but there is affection in your voice as well."
Rin pointed out, and the system went silent for a moment before replying.
[Is that so? This system would like to think it treats everyone except you equally. But I suppose there is still a little bias left in this senior’s heart for those children it once watched grow up.]
The system...had watched those children grow up.
That realization made Rin curious about the system’s identity.
Was it truly part of the creature responsible for the apocalypse? Or was there something else going on behind the scenes?
[Don’t think too much, Rookie. Instead, why don’t you go talk to those children? Knowing them, they must be sulking right now. Not that they would ever admit it.]
The system sounded confident as it encouraged Rin to check on the others.
Rin was becoming more suspicious of whatever game the system was playing, but he decided to follow its suggestion.
After all, that was what he had intended to do from the beginning.
Moreover, he could hear loud voices coming from the hallway. Shelly’s voice was particularly loud, and she sounded furious.
Rin felt like he should stop her before she did something drastic and someone got hurt.
’What a headache. Is it even worth hearing Kyle out? But it’s true that both the system and this whole situation are suspicious. And if he really has a solution, then I should at least listen to him. The sooner we end this apocalypse, the better it will be for everyone.’
And he felt like he finally had the key to doing so in his hand.
