There was a solution to helping Teressa right in front of Serena. All she had to do was quicken her own death and she would be able to save a life.

And yet, Serena felt hesitant to take this offer. She did not want to die, much less for someone else’s sake.
She felt like she was selfish, but even this knowledge did nothing to help her make a decision.
Teressa finally calmed down a little and closed her eyes since she was tired. Seeing her like this made Serena feel sorry for her, and despite knowing that it was not alright for her to make this offer, Serena’s mouth moved on its own.
"Teressa, what if there was a way for you to get rid of this corruption? Would you take the chance?"
Serena asked and Teressa’s eyes snapped open with a wide-eyed look of shock.
"Is that even possible? I tried everything, but this corruption won’t go down. W-What should I do?"
Teressa looked terrified and Serena’s body moved on its own to grab Teressa’s shoulder.
"Don’t worry. I will help you out in just a second."
Serena told her before she started to absorb the corruption from Teressa. She could feel her condition worsening, but Serena kept increasing her power output until she could not physically keep up with the strain anymore.
Once it was done, Serena quickly pulled back and stood up.
"You...did it? What did you do? I cannot feel the corruption anymore."
Teressa asked as she looked at her hands with a look of wonder. But Serena had no words for her because she was struggling to breathe now.
[Your corruption levels have exceeded 90%. Your transformation into a calamity will begin shortly.]
That message was like a splash of cold water on her. It woke her up and made Serena realize that she had done something she was not supposed to.
But she could not take back her actions even if she wanted to.
’Maybe it is better like this. If I am doomed to die anyway, then I should at least get to save someone’s life.’
Serena tried to make herself feel better, but it did not help much. Teressa was still saying something to her when Serena felt like she could not hear her anymore.
Soft hands pressed themselves against her ears, blocking any sound from reaching her.
’It’s alright, my dear! You made the right choice. You will come to see Mommy any day now, so help out as much as you can in the meantime. Make your Mommy proud.’
The voice came back and whispered in her ear. But this time, it felt so much closer and the hands on her ears felt solid as well.
Serena could feel the warmth behind this touch, which made her flinch.
Her mother’s touch was not supposed to feel this solid. It was not supposed to make her crave something she would never get back.
And yet, here she was, with the same longing that she knew could not be fulfilled by anyone.
’Don’t say that, my dear child. I am here with you. Mommy will always stay with you, no matter what. So listen to me and-’
Serena grabbed the bottle of potion and drank the last of it.
The voice disappeared and her body immediately swayed due to how tired it was.
Serena needed to sleep the potion off. But she did not want to go to sleep. She only had limited time left and she wanted to spend it doing what she wanted to do.
But to make that possible, she needed one thing—more potion to keep her head empty at all times. And there was only one person who could help her.
It was hard for Serena to head toward Rin’s office in her current state, but she somehow made it there.
She knocked on the door and entered without permission, only to be greeted by Shelly’s sword almost tearing her throat out.
But Serena did not show any hesitation as she kept herself standing still. It made Shelly frown and she only made a shallow cut before backing off.
Rin looked equally surprised to see her here as she had been by Shelly’s attack. But Shelly’s sharp voice pulled her back quickly, reminding her of where she was and what she was doing.
"What are you doing here? Is there anything you need?"
Shelly was judging Serena so hard that her eyes were threatening to poke holes through her. But Serena was somehow able to ignore her and focus on Rin.
"Are you alright? Serena, you are swaying on your feet. Did you drink the potion I gave you? You are supposed to sleep it off, not wander around like this."
Rin told her in a worried voice and Serena felt her heart drop in panic.
’He’s angry at me. Does this mean he won’t give me more potion if I ask? I cannot have that. I need that potion at all costs.’
Serena knew she was hyperventilating, but she did not care. The more desperate she looked, the more she felt like Rin would pity her.
"I...want to go to sleep as well. But I ran out of potion. Do you think you have anything stronger? Or maybe the same bottle will work as well."
Serena told him and Rin frowned as he looked at her complexion and current condition. His frown told her everything she needed to know about his decision.
"Somehow, I don’t think it is a good idea for you to drink any more of this potion. If you want to sleep, then I can give you another one-"
"I want that one. Please don’t question me and give me that potion. I promise I will pay you back for it."
Serena was starting to sound desperate, and she was desperate. She needed that potion at all costs and she needed it now.
Seeing her like this made Rin sigh and he finally relented and brought out another potion bottle.
"I guess I can hand this over to you this time. But this will be the last bottle for a while. You are not supposed to drink a lot of it or there is a chance you might get addicted."
It was likely too late for such a warning. Serena already knew she was addicted to this potion after taking it once.
But the less Rin knew, the better it would be for her.
