Chapter 200: Ch 200: Madam Yao’s uninvited guest
"Madam Yao, are you sure those people will be alright? Maybe you should have gone as well..."
Wise eyes looked at her assistant, and Madam Yao stood up before walking toward her with slow and deliberate steps.
The poor assistant stepped back until her back touched the wall. She was so nervous that she could barely move or speak properly. But she still tried to express herself.
"M-Miss Yao, I-I am—"
"Shhh. There is no need to doubt my decision. I foresaw how this task would unfold and chose the perfect team for it. They should have no problem clearing this task, so there is no need to worry."
Madam Yao stood so close to her assistant that the young woman felt a blush spread across her face. She wanted to run away, but every escape route was blocked by Madam Yao.
It made her heart skip a beat as she looked at the middle-aged woman who still appeared young and vibrant. The sight made her envious, and a faint blush colored her cheeks.
’Madam Yao is so cool. I want to be like her. But how can I ever achieve that level of maturity?’
The assistant watched as Madam Yao returned to her desk and began drawing something on a sheet of paper.
"What are you doing, Madam Yao? What is that?"
The assistant asked as she looked at the shapes and symbols being drawn before her eyes.
None of it made sense to her, but Madam Yao seemed to know exactly what she was looking at.
"This is a horoscope chart that helps me predict the future. I am drawing one so I can see what is going to happen next."
Madam Yao focused as soon as she finished speaking, and the assistant had witnessed this scene enough times to know that Madam Yao was using her abilities.
At first, everything seemed normal as Madam Yao concentrated. She was deeply focused on her divination when a frown suddenly appeared on her face. It slowly morphed into panic, and she opened her eyes with a terrified expression.
"Huff—! N-No! This is—!"
The assistant immediately brought her a glass of water. Madam Yao took a few sips before pushing the glass away and rubbing her forehead.
"Madam Yao, is everything alright?"
The assistant asked, but Madam Yao shook her head.
"Nothing is alright. A huge disaster is looming over all of us, and it will devour us all soon. We need to do something before we all die and—"
"So your ability to see the future was no joke. I suppose my trip here was not wasted after all."
A cold voice interrupted Madam Yao, snapping her out of her panic.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here? I was not supposed to receive any visitors today, so why are you here?"
Madam Yao asked as she pushed her assistant behind her and straightened her back.
The man stepped out of the shadows, but his hood concealed his features. He sat down in the chair opposite Madam Yao before she could say anything further.
"I had heard rumors about your powers, but I never took them seriously until now. It seems those rumors had some truth to them after all."
The man spoke so softly that it was difficult to tell whether it was even his real voice. Still, there was something strangely familiar about him.
Madam Yao remained on guard, and the stranger noticed this and chuckled.
"There is no need to be so alarmed. I am merely a passing traveler who decided to visit after hearing about Madam Yao’s incredible abilities. I mean you no harm."
The man reassured her, but Madam Yao only grew more suspicious. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
No reasonable person would say something like that and expect to be believed.
Her expression made the man chuckle even harder, and Madam Yao’s unease deepened.
Finally, the man dropped the act and revealed why he was actually here.
"I want Madam Yao to perform a reading for me."
It was a straightforward request, but Madam Yao had a feeling she should refuse.
She was about to follow her instincts when she looked at the stranger again and felt a sense of danger. Rejecting him seemed far riskier than complying.
The best course of action was to grant his request and send him away as quickly as possible.
"Fine. I will perform a reading for you. Give me your hand."
The man did as she asked, and Madam Yao activated her ability.
She tried to peer into his future, but something familiar tugged at her consciousness.
One moment she was standing before the man, and the next she was being buried alive beneath countless roots.
The roots were translucent and glowed with beautiful colors.
But to her, they were terrifying.
She was being buried alive, unable to breathe.
’W-What kind of future is this? Is this even a future? It feels so suffocating. And this feeling... are we all going to die?’
Madam Yao thought as she clutched her throat.
Just as she was about to close her eyes and surrender to eternal sleep, she felt someone grab her wrist and pull her free.
The next thing she knew, she was sitting in her office, clutching her throat with wide eyes.
"W-What was that future? What are you? Was that even a vision of the future, or were you trying to devour me whole?"
Madam Yao asked as she rubbed her throat.
There were no marks on it, but she could still feel the phantom pain.
The man chuckled at her distress before letting out a sigh.
"It seems the future has not changed. But that is fine. I suppose it is finally time for me to pay a visit to my ’older brother.’"
"Your older brother?"
Madam Yao asked.
The stranger sighed.
"Well, perhaps ’older brother’ is not quite the right term. We have different parents. But in terms of our origins, we are the same. Not that it is any of your business."
The man replied as he turned to leave.
Madam Yao remained on guard even as he exited her office.
"Since you looked into my future, I will offer you a piece of advice as well. Stay away from whatever is about to happen. And if anyone asks for your help, refuse them no matter who they are."
It sounded more like a warning than advice, and Madam Yao was not sure how to take it.
"Madam Yao, are you alright? Who was that man?"
Her assistant asked.
Madam Yao wanted to know the answer as well. But she had a feeling she would find out soon enough.
