Chapter 155: Chapter 155: President Vaughn Lacks Common Sense
"So, from the very beginning, you’ve looked down on Cecelia Archer. You think her intentions are impure, and even though they have a child, you still can’t accept her. Is that right?"
Since things had come to this, Mrs. Vaughn wasn’t afraid to tell the old master exactly what she thought.
"A child? As long as we have Damien, will our family ever be short of children? We’re a family destined for great things; we shouldn’t be bogged down by trivial romance. If you really want grandchildren so badly, you should have Damien marry Gwen Morgan sooner. Is there any number of children Gwen Morgan couldn’t give him? Gwen is the one who’s a true match for Damien. Marrying her would benefit him in every conceivable way. Dad, it’s simple arithmetic. How can you be so muddled that you can’t even get that?"
"Am I the muddled one, or are you just heartless? No wonder back then..."
At this, the old master suddenly understood why his son had never been able to love Jessica Bell.

"Forget it. Just forget it. Damien, you can handle this yourself. I can’t be bothered to say another word."
The grandfather felt he couldn’t get through to Mrs. Vaughn. Arguing further would only make him angrier, so he stormed out of the hall.
Watching his retreating figure, Mrs. Vaughn was speechless for a few moments before turning to Damien Vaughn.
"Your grandfather is old. His thinking is behind the times. Damien, you’re young and have a boundless future. You can’t afford to be muddled like him."
"I know you’ve been generous to Cecelia Archer and her daughter. After all this time with you, she’s gotten more than enough to set them both up for life. Now that she’s gone, just let it be. Come, sit down. Let’s have a proper mother-son chat about you and Gwen Morgan."
Damien Vaughn was utterly speechless at his mother’s words.
He took two steps back, dodging his mother’s outstretched hand. His expression darkened as he said,
"For the sole reason that you are my mother, I will let what you did to Cecelia Archer today slide. But from now on, please stay out of my affairs. Mom, you know I’ve hated you ordering me around since I was a child. If you continue to interfere, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do."
"You..."
With that, Damien Vaughn turned and walked out of the hall, got into his car, and sped off.
Watching her son’s resolute departure and replaying his words in her head, Mrs. Vaughn trembled with such rage that she nearly collapsed.
’Didn’t he say he couldn’t find that little vixen? How did he know I hit her? Did that homewrecker call him to tattle?’
’I really underestimated that vixen’s ability to stir up trouble!’
’I thought she’d be scared, but it turns out she wants to go head-to-head with me?’
Fine. Mrs. Vaughn’s fighting spirit was thoroughly ignited.
’To live to my age and be led around by the nose by some vixen? Impossible!’
’If I don’t expose her for the fraud she is and make the old master and Damien Vaughn see her true colors, then my name isn’t Jessica Bell!’
Damien Vaughn drove back to Cecelia Archer’s place.
The villa was large and fully furnished, but it had been vacant for years and lacked many basic necessities.
Cecelia Archer didn’t have a car, making it difficult for her to go out. If he didn’t buy them the necessities, she and Candy would have trouble even getting food.
After parking, Damien Vaughn keyed in the passcode and entered the house. Cecelia Archer and Candy were in the middle of cleaning.
Candy was thrilled to see him return.
"Daddy, you’re back!"
Damien Vaughn walked over to her. Seeing her little hands, red and waterlogged from wringing a towel, he frowned in concern.
"Why are you doing this kind of work? You’re just a little girl, isn’t your mom worried you’ll get tired? Stop now."
He took Candy to wash her hands, then walked back over to Cecelia Archer.
"You should stop, too. I’ll have a cleaning service come tomorrow. We can just make do for today. You really can’t sit still for a second, can you?"
Cecelia Archer didn’t stop her work. "Even if we ’make do,’ the place has to be livable. There’s dust everywhere. How can we not clean? Why are you back? Did your grandfather say anything? Is he feeling any better?"
"You taking good care of Candy is the best thing you can do for him."
Damien Vaughn went and took the towel from Cecelia Archer’s hands.
"I told you to stop, so just stop. I’ll have Ryan send a few people over right now, alright?"
He was being so insistent that Cecelia Archer had no choice but to relent.
Damien Vaughn watched her wash her hands.
"There’s nothing in the house. I’ll take you to buy some things. Put your shoes on. We’re going to the supermarket."
Cecelia Archer had just done a walkthrough of the house. Other than furniture, there were absolutely no household supplies. She had been planning to finish cleaning and then take Candy to the supermarket herself, but then he’d shown up again.
She didn’t want to go with him.
For one, Cecelia Archer still hadn’t forgiven him for what happened last night. For another, she didn’t want to spend his money. And third, wouldn’t the three of them going to the supermarket together look a little too much like a family?
"There’s no need. We can go by ourselves. Your mother and grandfather are upset because of me today. You should go back and be with them."
Damien Vaughn hated it when she put up this wall, keeping him at arm’s length.
’They’d already come this far, but in her heart, did she still not see him as her man? She was unwilling to do anything with him.’
"Do you enjoy talking in circles? Can’t you say anything to me besides ’There’s no need’ and ’We’re fine’?"
Candy was watching them from the side. Not wanting to get angry at Cecelia Archer and scare their daughter, Damien Vaughn suppressed his temper and looked down at Candy.
"Do you want to go to the supermarket with Daddy?"
Of course Candy wanted to. She had never been to the supermarket with her mom and dad like a real family, but she didn’t dare say so.
But Damien Vaughn could still see the longing in her eyes. He reached down and scooped her up into his arms.
"Let’s go. I’ll buy you some toys."
With that, the two of them walked out the door.
With her daughter carried off, it would be awkward to just stand there stubbornly, so Cecelia Archer had no choice but to follow them.
Damien Vaughn used his car’s navigation and quickly found a nearby supermarket.
He parked in the underground garage and, carrying Candy, walked ahead to the supermarket entrance.
Candy looked at the neat rows of shopping carts.
"Daddy, I want to ride in one of those carts! When we go to the supermarket, I always see other kids getting pushed in the cart seat by their daddies, and I’ve been jealous for so long."
It was a simple wish, and he would grant it.
Damien Vaughn carried her over to the shopping carts.
But the carts were all nested together in a neat line, and he couldn’t pull one free. They were all chained together with a lock.
He never did his own shopping and was completely lacking in this kind of real-world knowledge. He turned to Candy in confusion.
"Why are they all locked? Do you know how this works?"
Candy found his cluelessness a little cute. She knew the answer, but she kept it to herself.
"Mommy knows. Let’s get Mommy to help us. Mommy, hurry up!"
Cecelia Archer walked up to them, and Damien Vaughn looked a little embarrassed. freewebnovёl.ƈom
"How do these things work? Do you know?"
Cecelia Archer couldn’t believe he lacked such basic, everyday knowledge.
’The great President Vaughn really lives in an ivory tower.’
"You have to insert a coin to release it. Wait here, I’ll go get one."
With that, she started walking toward a nearby security guard, and Damien Vaughn followed.
"I’ll do it."
