Chapter 103: Chapter 103: My Woman, No One Has the Right to Order Her Around
Brandon Jacobs hung up and rolled over, intending to go back to sleep, but suddenly found he was wide awake.
Remembering it had been a few days since he’d spoken with Damien Vaughn, he smirked, deciding to mess with him a little.
In the CEO’s office at the Vaughn Group, Damien Vaughn was at work. When he saw the call was from Brandon Jacobs, he answered it casually.
He continued to look over a document as he asked, "What’s up?"
"Vaughn, what are you doing?" freёwebnovel.com
Damien Vaughn could tell from Brandon Jacobs’s voice that he had just woken up, and he replied irritably.
"Working. You think everyone is like you, making money just by lying around all day?"
"Is there something, President Jacobs? If you have something to say, say it. If not, go back to sleep. I don’t have time to banter with you."
It just goes to show you that people have a bit of a masochistic streak. Brandon Jacobs was always surrounded by people who pandered to and praised him, and after a while, he found it boring. He actually enjoyed these sharp retorts from Damien Vaughn.
"Heh heh. After all our years of friendship, I can’t just call you for a chat? I’m telling you, Vaughn, that’s not cool of you. First, you quietly got together with that other woman, and if she hadn’t shown up at the club to cause a scene, I’d still be in the dark. Now you have a new girlfriend, and you’re hiding her too?"
"Do you have no confidence in yourself, afraid I’ll steal her if you go public? Or do you just enjoy being so secretive?"
The hand Damien Vaughn was using to flip through his documents paused. "I have a new girlfriend? Who told you that?"
"Don’t worry about who told me, just tell me if it’s true. I remember you were single just a few days ago—I was about to introduce you to my cousin. How could you suddenly..."
Damien Vaughn understood. "Annabelle Young told you? Why would she be telling you about this so early in the morning?"
Brandon Jacobs had been groggy and was just trying to joke around, but what Damien Vaughn said jolted him awake.
Clutching his phone, he shot up in bed.
"Holy shit! It’s for real? No way, Vaughn, you really have a new girlfriend? A woman you’ve known for years, with a kid who’s already several years old? How did I know nothing about this? Damn it, who is she? If it’s been that many years, why haven’t you brought her home? You don’t think much of her, but you don’t think much of your own kid either? If that’s the case, why did you suddenly bring them back home?"
"Damn, that’s a lot to take in! Vaughn, what the hell is going on? Keeping me in the dark like this—do you even consider me your brother?"
Damien Vaughn knew it. With Brandon’s love for gossip, telling him even a little would make him blow things way out of proportion.
He was in no mood to explain everything to Brandon Jacobs, so he asked in a low voice.
"How does Annabelle Young know? Who told her? Where is she now?"
When Annabelle Young first met Cecelia Archer, there was nothing going on between him and Cecelia.
The reason Annabelle Young went to the hospital to see Candy, befriended Cecelia Archer, and helped her find a job—it was painfully obvious what her motives were.
Now that her goal hadn’t been met and she was instead watching something blossom between him and Cecelia, how could Annabelle possibly be pleasant to her?
Damien Vaughn’s tone was so cold and sharp that Brandon Jacobs had no choice but to answer.
"She’s at your family’s house. Apparently, she heard it from your Second Aunt. She didn’t believe it, so she called to ask me, and I fucking thought..."
BEEP BEEP BEEP... Damien Vaughn had hung up.
"Ryan!"
Ryan rushed in. "President Vaughn, you called for me?"
"Is Annabelle Young’s number in that phone of mine?"
"Yes, President Vaughn. Do you need something from her? Should you contact her personally, or shall I?"
"Give me the phone."
Back at the Second Aunt’s home, after hearing Brandon Jacobs’s firm denial, the Second Aunt and Simone Vaughn found the situation even more bizarre, which only strengthened their suspicions.
’They were secretly delighted but didn’t dare let it show. They also couldn’t let Annabelle Young make a huge scene in their home.’
’After all, this was Damien Vaughn’s private affair. If they publicly exposed it in their home and angered the old man, Damien Vaughn would not be pleased with them.’
’But they weren’t about to cover for him, either. The truth would have to come out sooner or later. It just required careful planning.’
Simone Vaughn went to comfort Annabelle Young. "Annabelle, please don’t get worked up. There must be some misunderstanding. Maybe we got it wrong. Your cousin and my older cousin are so close; he wouldn’t lie to you."
"Let’s not talk about this for now. Come on, this is your first time visiting. Let’s talk about something more pleasant."
Just as Simone Vaughn was about to pull Annabelle to a seat and brush the matter aside, Annabelle’s phone rang.
She picked it up and saw the caller ID: Damien.
Her heart, which had sunk to rock bottom, suddenly leaped with joy.
She assumed her cousin had spoken to Damien and that he was calling personally to explain. In front of everyone, she quickly put the call on speaker.
"Damien~"
’Damien was calling her? So soon?’
At the side, Cecelia Archer saw Annabelle Young’s joyous expression as she answered the phone, calling Damien’s name in a syrupy sweet voice. Cecelia unconsciously clasped her hands together.
"Miss Young, where are you right now?"
Damien Vaughn’s deep, magnetic voice traveled through the phone, so captivating it could make one’s ears tingle.
Annabelle Young answered with a bashful expression. "I’m at your family’s home right now. I happened to run into Simone at the mall yesterday, so we arranged for me to visit today. I just arrived. What’s up? Did you need something?"
"Actually, yes. My apologies, Miss Young, but I’m afraid I’ll have to take a few minutes of your time."
"It’s no problem at all! You don’t have to be so formal with me. Just tell me what’s on your mind."
"Very well, I’ll be direct. Miss Young, I’d like to ask you a question. What do you believe the relationship is between us?"
Annabelle Young was taken aback. "What?"
Damien Vaughn’s tone was icy. "We’ve only exchanged a few extra words because of your cousin. I don’t think we even qualify as casual friends. Therefore, you have no right to meddle in my affairs, let alone spread rumors. I don’t want to hear anything about you from your cousin ever again. After this call, please delete my number. Thank you."
Annabelle Young’s face went white as a sheet.
’With so many people watching, Damien had suddenly called to cut all ties. How was this any different from stripping her naked in public?’
Tears instantly welled in her eyes. She didn’t understand what she had done wrong. "Damien, your words..." frёeωebɳovel.com
Damien Vaughn cut her off. "Is Cecelia Archer there with you? Who else is around? Please put me on speaker."
Annabelle Young: "..."
Damien continued, "I know Second Aunt and Simone Vaughn are there with you. If you won’t put me on speaker, then please relay this message for me. Cecelia Archer is my woman, and mine alone. I’d appreciate it if they learned some boundaries. They are not to summon her to meet people or run errands at their whim. I wouldn’t dream of making her lift a finger, so they certainly don’t have the right. From now on, I will be calling home at a set time every day to ask about Cecelia’s plans. If I hear that she has been called away by them again, don’t expect me to be pleasant about it. Do you understand?"
Now, it wasn’t just Annabelle Young’s face that was pale; Second Aunt and Simone Vaughn’s expressions had turned as black as the bottom of a pot.
’Damien Vaughn was being utterly arrogant and conceited!’
’And for a woman like her? To think he would speak to them that way!’
’Has someone put a hex on him? Is there something wrong with his brain? What on earth is so special about Cecelia Archer?’
