Chapter 1155: Chapter 1155: Allowing Yourself to Rely on Someone

The phone on the table rang—it was a video call from Mrs. Tollman, and without even thinking she knew it must be the two kids missing their mom.

Still a little dazed, Janelle Tollman hurriedly pulled herself together and picked up the call.

Noah’s voice came through right away: "Mom, when are you coming back?"

Janelle smiled at the sight of Noah and Chase in their pajamas on the screen. "Mom will be back in a couple of days. Do you miss me?"

"You didn’t even take us out to have fun," Noah muttered under his breath.

Janelle said, "Mom will be back in a couple of days."

Chase, who hadn’t spoken the whole time, quietly studied the place Janelle was in on the screen and asked, "Mom, are you having a late-night snack outside?"

Before Janelle could answer, Noah squeezed in close to the screen with a hurt look on his face and said, "You didn’t even take me and big brother to eat with you."

Janelle gave a helpless little smile. "When Mom comes back, I’ll take you guys out to eat, okay?"

Noah: "You’re not allowed to lie."

While Janelle was chatting with the kids, Arthur Sutton just listened quietly without saying a word.

During that time Janelle also glanced at him several times, as if hesitating over whether she should tell the kids that she was with Uncle Sutton.

But in the end she still didn’t bring any of that up to the kids on the video call.

After hanging up, Janelle seemed afraid Arthur Sutton might be upset because of it, and quickly explained, "...Let’s wait until the day we go back and tell them face to face."

Arthur nodded with a gentle smile, not a trace of blame or displeasure in his eyes. "We’ll do it your way."

Even though Janelle tried her best to act natural, she was visibly stiff, and the smile on her face was a bit awkward. "To be honest, I still haven’t figured out how I’m supposed to tell the kids."

Arthur gave a soft laugh to ease her nerves and said, "This is the kind of thing I should be the one to explain to the kids. It already took a lot of courage for you to come and tell me all this. You’ve taken that first step—leave the rest to me. You don’t need to worry about it."

He always managed to make her feel at ease, whether it was something big or something small.

Although over the years Janelle had grown used to facing many things on her own, the feeling of being able to let herself rely on someone still warmed her heart.

The purpose of this trip had already been achieved, and Janelle finally felt like she could let out a breath.

But it didn’t seem like she and Arthur had become any closer because of the shift in their relationship; the two of them were still as polite with each other as before.

Then again, Arthur had always been this gentlemanly and courteous, so Janelle didn’t let her thoughts run wild because of it.

The next morning, Arthur left the hotel early.

Janelle, on the other hand, didn’t actually have any so-called friends to see, and for once there were no kids around to interrupt her, so she slept straight through until after ten.

When she woke up, she was still lazily curled up under the covers, unwilling to get out of bed.

She picked up her phone and saw that Arthur had sent her a message a little after eight in the morning: [I asked the hotel to prepare breakfast for you. If you’re up, remember to go to the restaurant and eat.]

It was already too late for breakfast, but too early for lunch.

Not wanting to let Arthur’s thoughtfulness go to waste, Janelle decided to head down to the restaurant.

She didn’t know whether it was because Arthur had shown his face when arranging the breakfast, or if the service here was just always this warm, but the staff treated her with particular courtesy.

As she ate breakfast, she scrolled through her phone looking up nearby places where she could go have some fun.

It was rare for her to come out like this, and on top of that she’d made up such a lie in front of Arthur, so she felt she had to at least put on a bit of a show.

In the past, whenever she traveled far it was always for work, and there were usually staff members with her.

This time she was traveling alone. Walking down the crowded streets, the livelier it was around her, the more alone she felt.

She almost wished she could actually drag some friend out of thin air in this city, but she didn’t know a single person here.
