Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Unexpected Joy
"Whether you’re spouting nonsense or not, you know it in your heart. Last time you brought Xu Peng over to plead for Ding Li’s cause, and today you’ve brought Zhou Mazi to threaten us.
"I see you’re actually in cahoots with them both, scheming to swindle Sister Cailian out of her land. Your hearts really are black."
Wang Hao stood before Zhao Youquan, not the least bit intimidated; there was simply no need to show any nicety to such a black-hearted village official.
"Don’t fucking bullshit me, when did I ever try to cheat that bitch out of her land?"
Zhou Mazi pointed at Wang Hao’s nose and cursed.
Having been thwarted by Wang Hao before at the village head, he was now simply irked by the sight of him.
Seeing his true intentions exposed by Wang Hao, Zhao Youquan didn’t dare continue the argument and could only turn to persuade Zheng Cailian.
"Sister Cailian, let me just speak frankly to you, these past few years the harvests haven’t been good, and without any labor at home, how much can one woman do? It’s better to lease the land out; you’ll even get to share the profits."
The words were put bluntly, but Zheng Cailian was not foolish; once the land was leased out, it would be extremely difficult to get it back.
She pondered for a few seconds, then turned to Zhao Youquan and answered firmly once again, "Chief, Ya Ya and I rely on these ten acres of land to live. Moreover, even if I lease the land, I might not even receive the rent. I will not lease the land, chief, please leave."
Zheng Cailian had issued an eviction, but Zhao Youquan was still not ready to give up easily, his gaze turning fierce as he impatiently exclaimed loudly:
"Zheng Cailian, don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Hand over the land quickly and save yourself the trouble of Ding Li taking you to court; come that time, don’t come crying to me for help."
Zhao Youquan’s words held a threatening tone, but with Wang Hao by her side, Zheng Cailian was not scared at all.
"Although I’m a widow, and not as worldly as you all, I can still see right through the evil schemes you harbor in your hearts."
"Chief, please relay to Ding Li that he’s free to take me to court if he wishes. As for wanting the land, he can dream on!"
Zheng Cailian said unapologetically.
Seeing her so unyielding, Zhao Youquan’s face darkened as he said, "Do you still expect to get this year’s subsidy for your family then?"
"Chief, isn’t that a bit too much bullying?"
Wang Hao interjected, seeing that these two were determined to pressure Zheng Cailian into giving up her land today.
"Wang Hao, mind your own damn business!"
Zhou Mazi glared at Wang Hao menacingly upon hearing this.
"What? You want a fight? Using these lowlife tactics to force Sister Cailian into leasing you the land - don’t you have any conscience? I’m definitely not letting this go today!"
Wang Hao spoke with conviction, looking down on them.
Zhao Youquan and Zhou Mazi had already experienced Wang Hao’s prowess in the past, so they dared not get physical with him.
Yet, as the village chief, Zhao Youquan did wield some power and controlled the village subsidies.
He then coldly barked at Wang Hao, "Wang Hao, do you also not want your family’s subsidy then?"
"Don’t think we don’t know most of the subsidies from the county end up in your pocket; do you think you could have built that fancy little house on your salary alone?
"Now you’re using the subsidies to blackmail us, you really are a heartless cur. As for your precious subsidy, I couldn’t care less!"
Wang Hao retorted scornfully to Zhao Youquan.
This was the first time Zhao Youquan had been so sharply criticized and he seethed with rage.
He suddenly stood in front of Wang Hao, glaring fiercely as he snapped, "Wang Hao, it looks like you’re asking for trouble, daring to speak to me like that!"
"Struck a nerve, did I? If you don’t want to lose your official hat, you’d better get lost!"
Wang Hao clenched his fists tightly, in a posture ready to fight at any moment.
He didn’t care how much authority the village chief held; bullying Zheng Cailian was out of the question, especially since she was now his woman.
Zhao Youquan was indeed intimidated by Wang Hao’s strong demeanor and didn’t know how to respond.
The tension suddenly escalated, and Zhou Mazi was too scared to move forward for confrontation.
Both sides glared at each other, rooted to the spot.
Zheng Cailian, standing to one side, feared that Wang Hao would come into conflict with Zhao Youquan because of her issue and hurriedly tried to defuse the situation.
"Village Chief, please give me a few more days to think it over."
"Hmph, make sure to decide after you’ve thought it through, and also, Ya Ya is at home recently, right? Don’t let this matter delay her schooling."
Zhao Youquan said in a sarcastic tone.
He was fuming at the moment, knowing he couldn’t contend with Wang Hao, but felt more than capable of dealing with a mere widow.
Wang Hao heard the implication in his words and sensed that Ya Ya’s issue might be related to him.
"Zhao Youquan, did you do this?"
"I’ve only heard about it; don’t falsely accuse me!" Zhao Youquan immediately retorted.
Upon hearing Zhao Youquan speak like this, Zheng Cailian’s heart shuddered, and she couldn’t help but feel a tinge of fear.
Her child was her Achilles’ heel, and now they were using Ya Ya’s future to threaten her.
While Zheng Cailian was feeling anxious, the urgent ring of a phone call suddenly broke the silence.
Looking at the caller ID, it was actually the principal. She quickly answered, saying, "Hello, Principal, did you need something? And about Ya Ya, could you possibly make an exception?" freewёbnoνel.com
No sooner had she finished speaking than a calm male voice came through the phone: "You’re Ya Ya’s mother, right? That’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about. Ya Ya can come back to school tomorrow. The previous issue was a misunderstanding; don’t take it to heart, I apologize to you."
"Principal, are you serious?"
Zheng Cailian said, overflowing with surprise.
The volume of the phone was loud, and both Wang Hao and Zhao Youquan heard it.
Wang Hao couldn’t help feeling impressed inwardly; this Sun Erlao really knew how to handle things. He had resolved the issue so quickly—it seems I’ve not befriended the wrong person.
Zhao Youquan, however, was full of confusion and bewilderment. He snatched Zheng Cailian’s phone and shouted into it.
"Old Li, what are you doing? How could you let us down at a critical moment?"
"Who are you?" The voice on the phone sounded puzzled.
"I’m Zhao Youquan!"
"Which Zhao Youquan? I don’t know you. Ya Ya’s mother, make sure she comes to school on time tomorrow; I have a meeting, so I won’t bother you anymore."
After saying that, the principal hung up.
Zheng Cailian snatched her phone back and said angrily, "Well, Village Chief, so you really were stirring up trouble. Get out of my house, now!"
Zheng Cailian roared hysterically.
Zhao Youquan was acting the fool, inadvertently exposing himself.
Wang Hao glared at Zhao Youquan. The old man had confessed without being pressed; let’s see how he would try to talk his way out of this one.
"This... was just a misunderstanding. I was also worried about Ya Ya’s schooling and wanted to check on the situation," Zhao Youquan said, feeling guilty.
"I’ve seen shameless, but I’ve never seen anyone as shameless as you, Village Chief. I, Wang Hao, am truly at a loss for words! Ha ha..."
Wang Hao laughed out loud.
"You..."
Zhao Youquan felt a guilty panic, having no guts to retort after being insulted.
Zheng Cailian was already put off by Zhao Youquan over the land lease, and now he was conspiring to use Ya Ya’s schooling as leverage against her, which was simply despicable.
The more Zheng Cailian thought about it, the angrier she became, and she yelled at Zhao Youquan and Zhou Mazi.
"If you don’t get out of my house right now, I’ll set the dogs on you!"
