CHAPTER 8 — THE FIRST ALLIANCE
The dungeon fell silent.
Not naturally.
Predators stopped moving.
The insects hidden beneath broken stones no longer chirped.
Even the dripping water seemed to hesitate.
Vespera recognized the feeling immediately.
Something had entered the upper dungeon.
The System confirmed it.

"So they're really here..."
Lirael's expression darkened.
"If they find me..."
"They'll rescue you."
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"They'll execute you."
Vespera remained silent.
Lirael looked directly into her golden eyes.
"Humans don't negotiate with monsters."
"I know."
"You saved me."
"They won't care."
Vespera smiled bitterly.
"I suppose not."
Voices echoed through the corridor.
"Captain! Fresh tracks!"
"They're recent."
"Stay alert!"
"Something killed the guardian's scouts."
Metal boots scraped across ancient stone.
Torchlight flickered through the darkness.
Vespera instinctively shifted backward into the shadows.
Her monster instincts urged her to attack first.
Her human memories urged caution.
Neither side had the answer.
Lirael suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"You still have Essence?"
"A little."
"Use your human form."
"It won't last long."
"It doesn't have to."
Black mist surrounded Vespera.
Her tail dissolved.
Moments later she stood on two trembling legs once again.
Lirael stared for a heartbeat.
"It still surprises me."
"I'm still getting used to it."
The adventurers entered the chamber.
Five of them.
A heavily armored knight.
A young mage.
Two swordsmen.
A hooded archer.
The knight immediately spotted Lirael.
"By the Goddess..."
"An elf!"
He rushed forward.
Then he noticed Vespera standing beside her.
His sword left its sheath.
"You."
"Step away from her."
The mage raised his staff.
"I sense Abyssal energy!"
"Captain, she's a monster!"
Vespera slowly raised both hands.
"I don't want to fight."
The knight laughed.
"Monsters don't get choices."
His sword flashed.
Vespera barely avoided the strike.
Stone shattered beneath the blade.
"So much for talking."
The battle erupted.
The swordsmen attacked together.
Vespera slipped between them with surprising speed despite still adjusting to her human body.
She wasn't as strong.
She wasn't as fast.
But she remembered something Priya once knew.
Timing.
One swordsman overextended.
She stepped aside.
His own companion crashed into him.
Both stumbled.
"Behind you!" Lirael shouted.
An arrow flew toward Vespera.
She ducked.
The arrow struck the prison barrier instead.
The runes flickered violently.
Everyone froze.
Another arrow.
Another flash.
Cracks spread across the magical seal.
Lirael's eyes widened.
"The barrier..."
"The arrows are disrupting the runes!"
The adventurers didn't realize what they had done.
Vespera did.
She smiled.
"Keep missing."
The knight charged again.
This time Vespera transformed in the middle of combat.
Black mist exploded around her.
Human skin gave way to gleaming midnight scales.
Her massive serpent tail smashed across the chamber floor.
The adventurers recoiled.
"What...?"
"She changed!"
The mage stumbled backward in panic.
"A shape-shifter!"
Vespera used the confusion.
Her tail wrapped around a fallen stone column.
With one powerful pull, she tore it free and hurled it toward the prison wall.
The collapsing pillar struck the weakened barrier.
The ancient runes shattered like glass.
Light flooded the chamber.
The prison finally broke.
Lirael collapsed to one knee.
After countless years...
She was free.
The surviving chains crumbled into dust.
The System rang through the chamber.

"What are you?"
Vespera answered honestly.
"I don't know yet."
Before anyone could speak again—
The ground shook.
Not from battle.
From below.
A deafening roar echoed through the entire dungeon.
Far deeper than the Guardian had ever stood.
The walls cracked.
Ancient dust poured from the ceiling.
The System flashed crimson.

Lirael looked toward the darkness beneath the ruined prison.
Her face lost all color.
"No..."
"It can't be."
Vespera met her gaze.
"You know what that is?"
Lirael whispered a single name.
"The Devourer."
The dungeon answered with another earth-shaking roar.
Whatever had been sleeping beneath the Abyss...
...was awake.
