CHAPTER 33 — THE ETERNAL SENTINEL
The massive stone doors groaned open.
Each movement echoed through the Royal Archive like distant thunder.
Dust drifted from the ancient ceiling.
The temperature dropped.
Something enormous stepped into the light.
It stood nearly twenty feet tall.
Unlike the Royal Sentinels, its armor wasn't polished crystal and silver.
It was forged from black metal etched with glowing golden runes.
A great shield rested on one arm.
In its other hand, it carried a spear taller than the ancient trees of the Emerald Wilds.
Its helmet resembled the head of a dragon, crowned with six crystal horns.
The System activated.

Silence filled the chamber.
Even Kragga's confident grin disappeared.
"...That's a big one."
Gorvak would've loved this fight, Vespera thought.
Then she focused.
The Eternal Sentinel lowered its spear.
Its voice echoed from deep within the armor.
"Royal Authority detected."
It turned toward Vespera.
"Identity verification..."
Golden light swept across her.
The serpent mark on her hand glowed brightly.
"Verification..."
Everyone held their breath.
Then—
"...Incomplete."
The construct raised its spear.
"Seven Royal Keys required."
"Current authorization insufficient."
Combat stance assumed.
"It recognizes you," Lirael whispered.
"But not completely."
Vespera nodded.
"Then we survive until it does."
The guardian moved.
No roar.
No warning.
Only impossible speed.
Its spear crashed into the marble floor where Vespera had been standing a heartbeat earlier.
The impact shattered the ground.
Cracks spread across the entire archive.
Shelves collapsed.
Thousands of ancient books rained down.
"Split up!" Darius ordered.
The group scattered.
Kragga attacked first.
With a battle cry, she swung her greataxe at the guardian's knee.
The axe connected.
A deafening clang echoed.
Kragga stumbled backward.
"My arms are numb!"
"There isn't even a dent!"
Lirael began casting.
"Chains of Dawn!"
Golden chains wrapped around the guardian's shield arm.
For a single second...
It stopped moving.
Then the chains shattered.
Sylvana's vines followed.
They fared no better.
"This thing isn't powered by corruption," Sylvana realized.
"It's fueled by something much older."
The System flashed.

Vespera shifted into her Abyssal Naga form.
If strength wouldn't defeat it...
Perhaps speed would.
She darted around the giant construct, climbing broken pillars with the aid of her serpentine tail.
The Eternal Sentinel tracked every movement.
Precise.
Calculated.
Never rushed.
She struck at the joints behind its armor.
Nothing.
Not even a scratch.
"It's adapting," she realized.
"It learns."
The guardian swung its massive shield.
Vespera transformed in an instant.
Dark mist enveloped her.
She returned to her human form mid-leap, reducing her size just enough to slip through a narrow gap between the shield and a collapsing pillar.
She landed lightly behind the construct.
Kragga blinked.
"I'll never get tired of watching that."
Darius observed every movement carefully.
Then...
His eyes widened.
"The runes."
"What?"
"They're changing."
Everyone looked.
Each time the Eternal Sentinel attacked...
The runes across its armor shifted.
Like words rearranging themselves.
Darius whispered something under his breath.
"No..."
"It can't be."
"What is it?" Vespera asked. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"I know those runes."
He looked toward the guardian with a mixture of fear and sorrow.
"They're not enchantments."
"They're names."
The room fell silent.
"Names?"
"The names of every Sovereign who ruled before."
He pointed toward the construct's chest.
"Their memories..."
"...are protecting this place."
Before anyone could process that revelation...
The serpent mark on Vespera's hand began burning.
Not painfully.
Warmly.
The Royal Key Fragment floated from her hand.
It drifted toward the Eternal Sentinel.
The guardian froze.
Its glowing eyes dimmed.
The spear lowered.
Then it spoke again.
This time...
Its voice no longer sounded mechanical.
It sounded...
Almost human.
"Successor..."
"You carry only one key."
"The path ahead will demand all seven."
"Until then..."
The giant knelt.
The entire archive shook.
Not in submission.
In recognition.
The System chimed.

The Eternal Sentinel slowly stepped aside.
Behind it stood another enormous doorway.
Unlike the others...
It was made entirely of crystal.
At its center were seven empty keyholes.
Only one now glowed. freewebnσvel.cøm
The first had accepted Vespera.
Six remained dark.
As the group approached the door, the Eternal Sentinel spoke one final sentence.
"Beware..."
"The Second Key is guarded not by stone..."
Its eyes flickered.
"...but by betrayal."
The warning echoed through the silent archive.
None of them yet understood its meaning.
But somewhere beyond the ruins...
Someone had already begun plotting against the Abyssal Domain.
