CHAPTER 31 — THE RUINS OF THE FIRST ERA

The Abyssal Domain waited.

Days passed after the letter was sent to Valenor.

No messenger returned.

No army marched.

No declaration of peace or war arrived.

Only silence.

For many in the Domain, the silence was more unsettling than open conflict.

Vespera stood atop the Sanctuary Tower in her human form, watching the distant tunnels that led toward the surface.

Lirael joined her.

"Still nothing?"

Vespera shook her head.

"Nothing."

Lirael sighed.

"I don't like waiting."

"Neither do I."

"But kingdoms move slower than adventurers."

Before either could say more, the Sanctuary Core rang through the entire Nest.

A deep, resonant tone echoed across every district.

The System materialized before Vespera.

The Council assembled within the hour.

Darius studied the map projected by the System.

"I've heard stories about these ruins."

"So have I," Gorvak said.

"None were pleasant."

Sylvana touched the glowing image.

"The forest spirits refuse to go near this place."

"They say the land itself remembers."

Kragga smiled.

"Then it sounds interesting."

Vespera nodded.

"We can't spend our time waiting for kingdoms to decide our fate."

"If these ruins contain knowledge..."

"We claim it first."

The expedition party was chosen.

Gorvak remained behind to oversee the Domain's defenses.

"If anything happens while you're gone," he said, "I'll hold the line."

The journey lasted two days.

Gradually, the vibrant forests gave way to broken stone roads swallowed by time.

Collapsed towers emerged from the darkness.

Massive statues lay shattered across the landscape.

Every symbol carved into the stone had been deliberately destroyed.

Lirael frowned.

"Someone wanted history erased."

Darius looked toward a ruined palace in the distance.

"They succeeded."

At the entrance stood a pair of enormous stone doors.

Neither showed signs of age.

Instead...

They seemed to be waiting.

As Vespera approached, the serpent-shaped mark on the back of her hand began to glow.

The doors trembled.

Ancient gears hidden within the mountain groaned to life.

Stone slowly slid aside.

Cold air rushed from the darkness beyond.

The System chimed.

Welcome...

Successor.

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

"Successor?" Kragga repeated.

"I don't like the sound of that."

Neither did Vespera.

Inside...

The dungeon was unlike any they had explored before.

No monster nests.

No natural caverns.

Instead, marble corridors stretched endlessly beneath glowing crystal chandeliers.

Ancient murals covered the walls.

One mural showed humans and monsters standing together beneath a great tree.

Another depicted a crowned figure extending a hand to representatives of dozens of races.

Sylvana stopped before it.

"This..."

"This isn't the world I was taught."

Lirael nodded.

"Our history says monsters and humans have always been enemies."

Darius quietly answered.

"No."

"They haven't."

Everyone turned toward him.

"You knew?"

The Black Knight stared at the mural.

"I was alive when this was painted."

Silence fell.

Before anyone could ask another question...

Footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Metal scraping against stone.

One.

Then another.

Ancient suits of armor emerged from side passages.

Their empty helmets glowed with blue light.

Each carried weapons forged from crystal steel.

The System activated.

One sentinel raised its sword.

A hollow voice echoed through the ruins.

"Unauthorized retrieval of royal knowledge..."

"...is forbidden."

Then every guardian drew its weapon.

Vespera smiled faintly.

She transformed into her Abyssal Naga form, scales shimmering in the crystal light.

"We're going to have to earn our answers."

The first sentinel charged.

And deep beneath the ruins...

Something ancient awakened to the presence of the new Abyss Queen.
