CHAPTER 3 — VENOM & HUNGER
The spider struck first.
A thick strand of black web shot through the darkness, slamming into the stone where Vespera had been only a heartbeat earlier.
The rock cracked.
Her instincts screamed.
Fast.
Too fast.
She twisted her serpentine body around a stone pillar as another strand hissed past her face.
"So I'm not the only hunter."
The monster descended from the ceiling with unnerving silence.
Its eight crimson eyes never blinked.
Its legs clicked softly against the stone as it circled, searching for an opening.
Vespera's golden eyes narrowed.
Charging head-on would be suicide.
She needed to think.
Her gaze swept across the cavern.
Stalagmites.
Loose rocks.
A narrow passage behind the spider.
An idea formed.
She darted left.
The spider lunged.
At the last instant, she coiled around a stone pillar and whipped her tail into it with all her strength.
The pillar fractured.
Stone crashed down.
The spider recoiled as debris rained over it, one jagged slab smashing across two of its legs.
It shrieked.
Not dead.
Injured.
Now.
Vespera surged forward.
Her fangs sank deep into the joint where the creature's armor was weakest.
Venom flowed.
The spider thrashed wildly, flinging her across the cavern.
She hit the ground hard, her vision swimming.
For a terrifying moment...
Nothing happened.
Then the spider staggered.
One leg buckled.
Then another.
Its movements slowed until its enormous body collapsed with a thunderous crash.
Silence returned.
The System appeared.

Warm energy flooded through every scale.
The bruises from the impact faded.
Her muscles tightened.
She was stronger.
But the warmth lasted only seconds.
Then came the hunger.
It hit like a tidal wave.
Her stomach twisted violently.
Every instinct demanded the same thing.
Consume.
Now.
She crawled toward the spider's corpse almost without thinking.
As she fed, dark crimson energy seeped from the monster into her body.
The sensation was unlike eating.
It was as if fragments of the creature itself dissolved into her soul.
Visions flashed.
Dark tunnels.
Sticky webs.
Countless hunts.
A lifetime of instinct condensed into a single heartbeat.
She jerked back, breathing heavily. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
"What..."
The memories vanished as quickly as they came.
The System answered.

"So every meal changes me..."
The realization settled heavily.
Power always carried a price.
A low growl echoed from deeper within the dungeon.
Not one voice.
Several.
Vespera slithered toward a narrow tunnel overlooking a massive cavern.
Her breath caught.
Below, dozens of monsters wandered through glowing fungal forests.
Horned wolves stalked the shadows.
Bat-like creatures clung to the ceiling.
Massive beetles pushed through fields of luminous moss.
An entire ecosystem.
And she...
She was at the very bottom of it.
A smile slowly spread across her face.
Good.
That meant there was room to climb.
As she turned to leave, something unexpected reached her ears.
A voice.
Weak.
Barely more than a whisper.
"...Help..."
It came from somewhere beyond a rusted iron gate hidden beneath hanging vines.
Human.
Or close enough. freēwēbnovel.com
Vespera stared into the darkness beyond the gate.
Someone else was alive in this dungeon.
And they were running out of time.
