In her Abyssal form, she slid between the grasping vines, her tail carrying her across the corrupted clearing with impossible speed.
"Kragga!" she shouted.
"Protect Lirael and Seraphine!"
The orc chieftain grinned, raising her greataxe.
"Finally!"
She met a charging mass of corrupted roots head-on, her axe splitting them apart in an explosion of black sap.
Sylvana wasn't attacking willingly.
Every movement she made was interrupted by visible moments of resistance.
One moment she fought them.
The next, she clutched her head in agony.
"Run..."
Her voice trembled.
"Please..."
"Before it uses me..."
Black veins spread farther across her emerald skin.
The corruption was winning.
Lirael knelt, pressing her hand against the forest floor.
Ancient elven runes spread beneath the roots.
"I can feel it!"
"It's not inside her heart."
"It's beneath it."
Seraphine looked toward the enormous oak rising behind Sylvana.
"The World Tree..."
"No."
Lirael shook her head.
"The roots."
"The corruption is feeding on the roots."
The System appeared.

"I'll clear the path."
She shifted.
Dark mist engulfed her body.
In a heartbeat, her massive naga form became her human form once more.
Kragga blinked.
"You switched again."
Vespera smiled.
"My human form is faster in tight spaces."
The orc laughed.
"I'm never getting used to that."
Vespera sprinted toward the ancient tree.
With her smaller frame, she slipped between the tangled roots while Kragga hacked open a passage behind her.
Lirael and Seraphine followed.
Above them, Sylvana screamed.
The entire forest shook.
Branches snapped.
Birds fled into the sky.
The corruption knew they had discovered its true body.
Beneath the Heart Tree...
They found it.
A pulsating black crystal the size of a carriage.
Crimson tendrils spread from it into every root of the forest.
Each pulse sent another wave of corruption through the trees.
"It isn't natural," Seraphine whispered.
"It was planted."
Before anyone could react...
The crystal split open.
A creature emerged.
Its body resembled a wolf woven from roots and shadow.
Six crimson eyes glowed in the darkness.
Its jaws dripped black essence.

Vespera clenched her jaw.

When Vespera emerged from beneath the Heart Tree in her human form, Sylvana was waiting.
The dryad approached slowly.
Then bowed her head.
"I judged you before knowing you."

She extended a hand woven with living vines.
"If you'll accept me..."
"I would like to stand beside you."
Vespera took her hand.
"I don't want servants."
"I want companions who choose this path."
Sylvana smiled.
"Then I choose."
