CHAPTER 22 — THE TRIAL OF STRENGTH
Steel met scale.
The impact shook the valley.
Vespera barely raised her claws in time to catch Kragga's descending greataxe. The force drove her several feet backward, carving deep trenches into the crystal earth.
The watching crowds fell silent.
Neither leader had taken a full step back.
Kragga grinned.
"Good."
"You didn't break."
Vespera smiled through gritted teeth.
"You'll have to try harder."
With a twist of her tail, Vespera redirected the axe and slipped to the side. Kragga pivoted with surprising speed, sweeping the weapon in a wide arc.
The strike shattered a nearby crystal pillar.
Fragments rained across the battlefield.
The System appeared.

Vespera darted forward.
Her movements were fluid, almost graceful.
She attacked with a flurry of claw strikes, forcing Kragga to defend instead of attack.
The orc chief laughed.
"Fast!"
"But not fast enough!"
She slammed the haft of her axe into the ground.
The shockwave rippled through the battlefield.
Vespera lost her footing for a heartbeat.
That was all Kragga needed.
The flat of the greataxe struck Vespera's shoulder, sending her tumbling across the stone.
Lirael took an anxious step forward.
Darius held out an arm.
"The duel isn't over."
Vespera rose slowly.
Her shoulder throbbed.
She rolled it once.
"It still works."
Across the field, Kragga rested the axe on one shoulder.
"Yield."
"You've earned my respect."
Vespera chuckled.
"You ask that before I've landed a real hit?"
Kragga's grin widened.
"There it is."
"The fire."
Dark mist swirled around Vespera.
She shifted from her Abyssal form into her human form.
Gasps echoed from both sides.
The orcs had expected a monster.
Instead they saw a woman with obsidian horns, golden eyes, and long midnight-black hair.
Kragga narrowed her eyes.
"So the rumors were true."
"You wear two faces."
"They're both me." fгeewebnovёl.com
Without warning, Vespera rushed forward again.
Instead of meeting strength with strength...
She used agility.
She slipped beneath the sweeping axe, pivoted behind Kragga, and coiled one arm around the haft.
With a sharp twist, she redirected the weapon into the ground.
For the first time...
Kragga lost her balance.
Vespera stepped back instead of attacking.
"I could have struck."
Kragga looked at her for a long moment.
"Yes."
"You could have."
The duel continued.
Minutes passed.
Both warriors accumulated bruises and cuts.
Neither gained a decisive advantage.
Then—
A terrified scream echoed from the nearby forest.
Everyone turned.
A pack of corrupted beasts burst from the crystal trees.
Black mist poured from their bodies.
They weren't attacking the Nest.
They were charging straight toward the orc camp.
Where children and elders waited.
"The Devourer's Blight..." Seraphine whispered.
"It reached them."
Kragga's face changed instantly.
"My people!"
She turned to run.
The corrupted beasts were already too close.
Vespera didn't hesitate.
"The duel is over!"
She sprinted after Kragga.
Together they intercepted the first beast before it reached the camp.
Kragga's axe split one creature in half.
Vespera's venom immobilized another.
More emerged from the trees.
Dozens.
Then dozens more.
The battlefield transformed from a duel into a desperate defense.
Orcs and sanctuary defenders fought side by side without waiting for orders.

Kobold engineers collapsed crystal outcroppings to block the advancing monsters.
Lirael and Seraphine combined ancient magic and healing to keep the wounded alive.
Darius stood at the center of the line like an unmovable wall.
At last, the final corrupted beast fell.
The valley grew quiet.
Kragga leaned on her axe, breathing heavily.
She looked around.
Not one orc child had been left behind.
Not because of her tribe alone.
Because Vespera's people had protected them as well.
She walked toward Vespera.
The two stood face to face.
"I challenged you expecting another conqueror."
She planted her axe into the earth.
"What I found..."
"...was someone who risked her life for strangers."
Kragga dropped to one knee.
The entire Broken Axe Clan followed.
"My strength belongs to my clan."
She looked up.
"And if you'll have us..."
"...our clan will stand beside yours."
The System chimed.

Vespera extended her hand.
Kragga accepted it and rose.
"No kneeling," Vespera said with a smile.
"If we're going to build a future..."
"We'll build it standing together."
The orcs answered with a roar that echoed across the valley.
From the shadows of the distant forest, unseen by the celebration, a pair of emerald eyes watched in silence.
The trees themselves seemed to whisper.
Something ancient had noticed the new alliance.
And it was waiting.
