CHAPTER 19 — THE BLIGHT OF THE ABYSS
The black mist did not advance like an army.
It spread like a disease.
Crystal trees that had glowed for centuries turned dull and gray. Streams lost their brilliant blue light. Small creatures fled the forest, driven by a terror they could not understand.
From the sanctuary walls, everyone watched in silence.
The Devourer's corruption had reached their doorstep.
The System appeared.

Vespera closed the ancient journal.
"Seal the outer gates."
The kobolds immediately lowered reinforced barriers while goblin scouts hurried to their assigned watch posts.
No panic.
Only purpose.
The sanctuary was becoming a community.
Inside the Council Hall, Vespera gathered everyone around the ancient stone table.
Darius.
Lirael.
Seraphine.
The Elder Ogre.
A map of the surrounding region rested before them.
"The blight is moving from the west," Lirael observed.
"It isn't random."
"It's following the old roads."
Seraphine nodded.
"The First Era built its roads around ley lines."
"If the corruption follows them..."
"It could spread across the entire continent."
Silence filled the room.
Vespera finally spoke.
"Then we stop it here."
Darius shook his head.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
"You don't stop a flood by standing in front of it."
"You find its source."
He pointed toward the map.
"There."
A ruined watchtower marked the edge of the sanctuary's territory.
"The first corruption appeared near the Tower of Echoes."
"You believe something is controlling it?" frёewebnoѵēl.com
"I believe something is feeding it."
The System chimed.

Preparations began immediately.
Kobolds repaired weapons.
The ogres reinforced armor with crystal plates recovered from the sanctuary.
Seraphine prepared healing potions using herbs from the underground gardens.
Lirael sorted ancient scrolls from the Royal Archive.
Vespera wandered through the sanctuary alone.
Children laughed near the restored fountain.
A goblin girl offered a flower to an elderly ogre.
The old giant smiled as he carefully tucked it behind one ear.
For a moment...
It didn't feel like monsters.
It felt like home.
A soft voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You built this quickly."
Seraphine approached quietly.
"I didn't."
Vespera smiled.
"They did."
The priestess looked around the sanctuary.
"When I was young..."
"I believed monsters destroyed everything they touched."
"And now?"
Seraphine sighed.
"Now I think fear destroyed more than monsters ever did."
That evening, the journal awakened again.
Ancient letters shimmered across its pages.
This time...
Everyone could see them.
A map slowly appeared.
Not of the sanctuary.
Of the entire continent.
Five symbols glowed upon it.
Each marked by the same serpent emblem as the First Royal Key.
Lirael stared in amazement.
"The remaining keys..."
"They're scattered."
Darius folded his arms.
"The First Queen prepared for this."
"But why hide them?"
No one answered.
Instead...
One of the five lights suddenly went dark.
The journal trembled violently.
The System flashed crimson.

Unknown Individual has claimed one of the Five Keys.

Far away...
Beyond the reach of the sanctuary...
A ruined cathedral stood beneath a blood-red sky.
A cloaked figure picked up an ancient bronze key from a shattered altar.
A cold smile appeared beneath the hood.
"So..."
"The heir has finally awakened."
They looked toward the distant horizon.
"Good."
"It means the game can begin again."
The stranger slipped the key into a black cloak embroidered with a silver serpent devouring its own tail.
Then vanished into the darkness.
Back at the sanctuary, Vespera closed the journal.
Someone else was searching for the Royal Keys.
Someone who knew far more than they did.
She looked around the Council Hall.
"We leave at dawn."
"The Tower of Echoes comes first."
Darius nodded.
"The journey will be dangerous."
Lirael smiled.
"When has it ever been anything else?"
Even Seraphine laughed softly.
Outside the sanctuary walls, the black mist continued to spread.
But within the sanctuary...
Hope had begun to spread faster.
