Chapter 9: Mimic Vs Greater Dragon
Without the presence of the sun, he cannot tell how much time has passed since he was reborn in this body. Thinking deeply about it, he does not even know if this world had the same day length as Earth’s.
To make everything worse, his body seems to not take a rest at all no matter how much he tries to sleep, which means he cannot use his internal body clock to calculate the passage of time.
For him personally though, it might be about an entire Earth day has passed since he woke up. Also, it has been several hours since he encountered that dragon.
Speaking of the dragon, it still scares the shit out of him. But his fears do not stop him from getting a taste of it sometime. Since that encounter, he has been hunting monsters for quite a long time and, as expected, his power has drastically increased.
During that time, he fought several kinds of monsters. Aside from those dragon-likes and the gryphon, he annihilated an army of gigantic tarantulas led by something like a massive queen. In the end, they give him the ability to shoot thick and flexible yet durable webs, allowing him to set effective crowd control on his opponents.
Another insect monster, a mantis, had tried to ambush him but he was faster than it, so he was able to burn it. Now, he has razor sharp blades, keener and better senses, more insane movement and mental speed, and powerful hind legs to his arsenal.
He also acquired the ability to turn his skin into a highly magic-resistant stony surface from a grotesque winged demon-like monster he assumed to be a gargoyle. But he has a strong feeling that the body of that massive golem from before is better than the gargoyle’s. It is one of his goals alongside that powerful dragon.
While experimenting with his body, he discovers that he can activate some of his abilities without transforming his full or a part of his body into that specific monster. Those abilities are just blended in his body seamlessly, but there are limits.
For example, he can apply the magic resistant properties of a gargoyle to his wooden exterior, but it requires him to change his body into the stony skin if he wants to receive less physical damage.
By the way, his skin is actually flesh with the appearance and texture of a wood. His mimic body is actually less tough than wood. But that was when in his early hours. Currently, his base body is able to tank a tail whip of a drake.
Overtime, he has cracked open countless magic crystals to absorb their power and gain numerous abilities from their body. He is definitely getting a lot more powerful every hour.
He might be able to fight that golem with medium to high difficulty, but he knows that he is still not powerful enough to take down that dragon. It is just on the other level. There might be a reason why it is in that special room.
(That dragon is probably the boss of this place or something.)
Now that he thinks about it, sheer power is not the only factor on who is more powerful between him. He absolutely needs to hone his skills and master his abilities to its full potential.
Although he has many abilities, none of them are actually flashy or destructive. They are just a tickle to that dragon. For that reason, he has been looking for a creature possessing abilities with high damage output. He has been looking so far that he ended up facing a large dragon.
(This one is huge.)
Hovering midair in his gryphon form a few hundred meters away, he is sternly looking at a dragon that is in the middle of its meal on the surface, which is a small wyvern. Dragons in general have keen senses and yet it does not notice him.
It is thanks to the mantis’s natural stealthfulness. It is not like he blends in with his surroundings, his presence has been impressively unnoticeable. The gryphons wings are also surprisingly silent, he is gonna give credits to that.
The dragon is huge, around thirty meters from snout to the tip of the tail, but it is not as big as that dragon. It has crimson red scales, which is lighter than that dragon’s deep red or carmine shade.
He is thinking that this dragon is a good benchmark to test how powerful he has become. This may be a key to defeating that dragon. Actually, no, the gap between these two dragons is just too vast. But this dragon could help him at least defeat that golem, if he ever came across it again.
For any of that to happen, he needs to take down this dragon first. While it is still busy eating, he prepares himself to his full power, including making his talons as sharp as the mantis’s blades.
He finally flaps his wings as powerful as he can, bursting himself toward the dragon at supersonic speed. His talons are ready to take the target’s neck.
Whish. BOOM!
His body cut through the air and the sound barrier, generating a power and loud sonic boom followed by a shockwave. At this speed, he closes the gap between them in just less than a second.

Alerted by his approach, the dragon quickly reacts to his sneak attack and immediately ducks as soon as his claws are about to reach its nape, barely dodging it. He is quite impressed by its reaction time. And then he finds something strange.
(Wait. If I made a sonic boom, it means that I broke the sound barrier. I was basically flying at supersonic speed. How did the dragon sense my approach before the sound reached it?)
He is visibly confused, but it is not time to think about it so he shrugs it off. He then takes a U-turn and charges at the dragon once more. The dragon has turned around to face him. Even though it is a lot bigger than he is, he still pushes himself to launch another attack again.
Whoosh.
VHOOSH.
In response, the dragon fires out a flamethrower. But it is nearly ineffective on him due to his magic-resistant body and he just pass it like walking through fog. Since it is occupied, his talons successfully land on its back, forcing his claws to pierce its durable scales, and penetrate them into its flesh. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
"GRRAW!!"
The dragon growls loudly in pain and moves its body frantically to fend him off. With its long neck, the dragon turns its head before snapping its mouth and it manages to take a bite of one of his legs, burying its teeth into his body.
(AHH! It hurts!)
The dragon abruptly pulls its head and throws him off the floor. He quickly gets up and checks on his injuries. The wound is deep, but he has to be more mindful of the dragon. Fortunately, he got this amazing ability from a huge slime that allows him to heal his body passively at an incredible rate. His wounds have closed in less than ten seconds.
(This dragon... I have to admit that it’s strong.)
But for some reason, he does not know why he is so happy and excited to face it?
(My god. My monstrous body must have been influencing my mind. There is no going back, I need to survive this obstacle to survive further. My previous life is full of running away from responsibilities and I have to end it right now.)
"GGRRRW!"
When the dragon charges, he makes his counterattack.
