Chapter 22: Mimic Vs Archdragon
(These doors... They are similar to that of the doors to the dungeon boss. No, the dungeon boss must be beyond these doors.)
Upon laying her eyes on the massive doors before her, Claire confirms that they are in front of the room to this dungeon’s boss.
(Do other dungeon boss rooms are similar to this?)
(Yes, very similar to this. But the main difference is the size. These doors are definitely larger than the ones in the imperial capital. Have you seen what’s inside?)
(Oh, yeah. It’s a dragon. The biggest and the most powerful creature I have stumbled in this world.)
Tremble. Tremble.
The whole place suddenly shakes and the massive doors begin to move. The doors slide inwardly into the black walls, revealing a room beyond.
If it was the Azrael from before, he would have shivered from the feeling of getting near that thing. But he is now different from that version of him and he steps his griffin form inside with confidence as he struts.
(A dragon, huh? From the sounds of it, it seems like a dragon more powerful than a greater dragon. According to legends, there was a dragon more powerful than any dragon in existence. If it’s true, then the one in this room must be an... archdragon.)
Right after Azrael enters the pitch black room, which is two kilometers wide at all sides and a kilometer tall, a breeze of hot air touches his legs. With his night vision, Azrael and Claire can clearly see what is the creature lying inside this massive room.
(Long time no see, dragon.)
Hiss...
As if responding to his entrance, the massive dragon in the room raises its head from the floor and blows out hot air from its nostrils to which warms up the scorchingly hot chamber even hotter.
Inside the chamber is an absurdly big and massive dragon covered with thick and hard deep-red scales. Its size is at least sixty meters in length from snout to the tip of its tail. Seeing that, Claire can conclude that what she is seeing is what it is.
(It’s really an archdragon... A fire-type to be exact.) Claire cannot believe her eyes. (From its mana alone, I can assure that this monster is a disaster level of threat.)
(Let’s save the chitchat later. We have to deal with this one first.)
(Alright.)
The two monsters lock their eyes together for a short time, painstakingly waiting for someone to make a move. For after feeling like a second later, one of them finally moves— it is the archdragon.
VHOOSH!
Just like what happened before, the archdragon opens its mouth wide and fires a beam of fiery blue flames at the gryphon. Azrael quickly reacts to the attack and flaps his wings once to soar in the air.
The archdragon then redirects its attack upwards following Azrael’s path. Though the griffin just outspeeds effortlessly until the attack stops. Realizing that its opponent is not the same as before, the dragon stands up from its lying position indicating that it is going to go serious.
THUD!
Azrael is now flying in the chamber and then the doors begin to move until the room is closed. He is now locked with the archdragon inside.
(The doors are now closed.) Claire remarks. (It can be opened again once the dungeon boss is defeated.)
(So it’s a do or die then.)
As Azrael is fastly flying throughout the vast chamber, the archdragon is consistently following his path waiting for the right time to attack. Its amber eyes are not taking off the griffin.
Although the griffin is stupidly fast, which makes it harder to target, the archdragon still opens its mouth and immediately fires a greater dragon blast from it without any charging time. freewebnoveℓ.com
(So fast!)
Azrael is shocked by the fast casting of the dragon blast and can barely make a sharp turn to avoid the deadly beam of concentrated blue flames. The dragon moves its head to pursue the agile gryphon, which creates multiple explosions in the background from the blast colliding with the walls.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The archdragon’s dragon blast’s firepower is significantly more powerful than that of a greater dragon even without charging its power. Due to the dragon’s massive mana reserve, it can fire its dragon blast for over a minute without stopping.
Azrael cannot just stop flying or else he would have been fatally wounded. When the archdragon finally closes its mouth, Azrael hovers midair to face the dragon and fires his own dragon blast.

The archdragon immediately reacts to it and quickly uses its left wing to cover itself. Azrael’s dragon blast hits the stationary target, which explodes in contact with the dragon.
BOOM!
Seizing that wiggle room, Azrael rapidly fires greater dragon fireballs at the archdragon. Bombarding the archdragon around two shots per second. Powerful explosions then inflicted upon the archdragon with each fireball is comparable to a greater dragon blast of an average greater dragon.
Since they are in an enclosed environment, the loud sounds and the shockwaves the attacks created are trapped inside, just bouncing off the walls and ceilings. In addition to the attack of the archdragon earlier, which is still reverberating, the dungeon boss chamber at the moment is extremely chaotic.
Azrael stops the bombardment five seconds later as he has to utilize his mana wisely. After waiting for the explosions and dust to settle, both Azrael and Claire are surprised by what they see.
Around the entire body of the archdragon, a translucent layer of coating can be seen. It is composed of repeated honeycomb patterns taking the shape of the archdragon. The overlay has a different level of transparency throughout with the most notable being the almost solid texture on where Azrael aimed his attacks. Azrael has seen something similar to that before.
(Is that a shield around its body?)
(I think so.) Claire replies with uncertainty. (Even though monsters are known for using wild magic it’s very rare for them to use defense abilities. It’s not like a magic spell either. It might be a wild magic an archdragon can also do.)
(That might be a problem. If magic doesn’t seem to work, let me try to attack it physically.)
Azrael swings his wings hard and launches himself into the archdragon at an insane speed, creating a powerful sonic boom behind. His talons are in the position to land on the tough dragon scales.
As he is traveling fast midair, he activates something on his body and a barrier of some sort suddenly manifests throughout his entire body just like what the archdragon just did.
What he just does is the wild magic he got from the colossus golem. It is an ability that creates a powerful force field around the user’s body that blocks obstacles ahead on top of greatly increasing their speed in addition to reducing the damages taken in the process.
The archdragon’s barrier, on the other hand, uses it purely for defense. It blocks almost any incoming physical and magical attacks. The archdragon can passively active it when it is on the offense but with a weaker effect. To fully use its max defense, the archdragon has to stop casting any of its wild magic.
On the other hand, the colossus golem combines it with its massive size to create a powerful momentum to destroy anything in its way. Practically, becoming an unstoppable force.
Despite the fact that Azrael is lighter than the colossus golem in orders of magnitude, his supersonic speed exponentially raises his momentum to the point where he flies around the same momentum with a thousand tons colossus golem running at eighty kilometers per hour.
The main difference between Azrael and the golem is that his charge generates hundreds of times more energy upon impact. The moment his unstoppable barrier meets the immovable defenses of the archdragon, a powerful explosion takes place in the chamber.
