Chapter 2460: Chapter 2436: Dead
Given Liang Dong’s current situation, staying put to evade is the right choice, and leaving quickly is also correct. In any case, the outcome of being discovered would be disastrous, whether hiding or evading makes little difference.
Facing dozens of people alone, and with the addition of two armed helicopters providing cover, no matter how skilled Liang Dong is, he would still find himself overwhelmed and eliminated once the enemy draws near. If the enemy decides to be straightforward, the moment those two Apaches make a slight turn, the rocks sheltering Liang Dong would lose all sense of protection. A single rocket or a few shells could easily end his life.
Encountering such a scene, no one’s skill matters. Even with Gao Yang’s near-divine gunmanship, he could only suppress the enemy for a moment if given the opportunity, so they never have the chance to raise their heads and shoot again, but that relies on the enemy having no helicopters.
As for Liang Dong, while better at shooting than most, he’s far from Gao Yang’s level. Only a handful in the world have been dubbed Gun God, so he can’t suppress dozens of enemies, let alone armed helicopters.
Liang Dong felt he was in danger, but after waiting a while, he noticed the enemy seemed not to be targeting him.
This was surprising; how could there be no response? Liang Dong gingerly peered out and saw that the enemy he didn’t hit earlier was now focused on shooting into the encirclement, completely ignoring him.
"What’s going on here?"
Liang Dong was utterly puzzled. If it was a ploy to draw him out, he could understand, but there was no need for such schemes. A few men branching out could have crushed him easily, so why was there no reaction?
"Are they actually a bunch of rookies?"
There was no other explanation. Liang Dong didn’t want to just sneak away, so he raised his rifle again, aimed at the target he missed earlier, carefully focused, and fired a burst.
Gunfire rang, the target fell, but the enemy wasn’t killed; still struggling on the ground, alerting nearby enemies who quickly turned around.
Liang Dong remained still, only slightly raising his eyes to observe the enemy’s movements.
Someone fired, but they certainly hadn’t seen Liang Dong, for the shots landed far from him. The enemy was still trying to locate the source rather than detecting his hiding spot.
Liang Dong analyzed his situation. All he could do was distract the enemy, easing the pressure on Vorvitsky. It was impossible for him to single-handedly charge in and rescue anyone. The best outcome would be Vorvitsky holding out long enough for Satan’s Troops to arrive.
Six enemies disengaged from the battlefield, turning around to hide, while others quickly took cover, not exposing their backs as before. In general, Liang Dong’s distraction was somewhat effective.
Liang Dong knew the enemy wouldn’t rest until he was found. Since his goal was to draw attention, he might as well maximize his presence.
Liang Dong moved his gun slightly, aimed at a person holding binoculars, and pulled the trigger immediately.
The person with binoculars barely exposed his head. At a distance of three hundred meters without a scope, hitting half a head seemed challenging even for Gao Yang. So, unsurprisingly, this burst of bullets missed.
A short burst missed the enemy. Realizing he was thoroughly exposed, Liang Dong fired another longer burst regardless.
Failing to hit the enemy holding binoculars, Liang Dong quickly ducked behind the rocks and changed magazines as bullets showered down on his shelter, sending fragments flying.
Breathing heavily, Liang Dong peered through the rock crevices, unable to spot the enemy.
One against many is an impossible fight. Even if he had just one squad for backup, they could have intercepted the enemy’s retreat. But being alone, it was hopeless.
In his moment of helplessness, Liang Dong saw two enemies leap out from cover and rapidly split to either side.
The enemy intended to use their suppressive advantage to flank him, attacking from the sides where Liang Dong hid behind the rocks.
Liang Dong’s advantage was shooting from the stone crevices under cover. Spotting a briefly exposed enemy, he couldn’t let this chance slip by.
Ratatat, ratatat, ratatat, after three short bursts, the enemy fell just before reaching their cover.
Hitting a moving target, Liang Dong was thrilled. Seeing a brief lull as the enemy reloaded, he charged out from the rocks, sprinting to the next predetermined cover.
The enemy fire was swift. Dust scattered near Liang Dong as bullets struck, and he dove behind the rocks.
Reinforcements would arrive soon; Liang Dong was aware of that. His objective was to ensure the enemy couldn’t fully focus on Vorvitsky, maximizing his harassment strategy.
Peeking out, he couldn’t see the enemy, but a helicopter approached.
There was nothing he could do now. The enemy called in the armed helicopters. Once they circled around, no matter how they shot, it would take just a finger pull to end the fight.
Despairing yet resolute, Liang Dong decided it was worth one last effort. Aiming at the direction of incoming bullets, he fired at a visible enemy’s head.
This time, whether it was desperation or sheer luck, he saw the spray of blood as the enemy was hit.
After firing, Liang Dong turned and ran downhill.
The helicopter was swift, and Liang Dong couldn’t outrun it on foot. Explosions burst around him as he sprinted.
Keeping an eye on the helicopter, Liang Dong noticed muzzle flashes and smoke. Immediately, he dived behind rocks, waiting for the explosions, and emerged unscathed, running again.
Narrowly escaping one round of shelling, he knew the next was unavoidable. Standing still made him an easy target; at least make it challenging for the pilots.
While running, he felt a thud on his back, realizing he’d been hit. He shouted, "I’ve got a bulletproof vest..."
It wasn’t the helicopter’s cannon but a bullet that failed to penetrate the vest. Still, he found no comfort, knowing death was imminent. As he spoke, a massive force laid him flat, numbing half his body.
Sprawled face down, Liang Dong painfully touched his abdomen, feeling a hand full of blood and a gaping wound. With resignation, he said, "Damn it, I’m dead..."
