Chapter 351: It’s just a Title

It was already weird enough that her father had been terribly ill and had seemed to get better before he got worse again.

Her thoughts focused on Eldric as Bella maintained a calm expression on her face while she listened to Eldric speak a couple more words before he finally got to his feet.

Making it clear that the meeting was indeed over.

Still, apart from Eldric, no one else seemed in a hurry to leave, or maybe everyone wanted him to leave first so they could speak to the others, something that became quite obvious as he looked around the hall.

A very annoyed expression appeared on his face before it settled back into one of calm composure. Bidding them farewell, he turned to leave, gesturing towards his guards who instantly followed behind him, their heavy boots echoing softly against the stone floor.

Lady June instantly moved to follow him, but Violet found it difficult to do the same, especially with how hard it was to look away from Cain who had not even spared her more than a glance since the meeting started.

Almost like she did not exist and even if she did, it was clear that her existence was irrelevant to him. His gaze focused instead on the beautiful black-haired woman with rosy red lips whose hand he had held throughout the entire meeting.

"Violet!" Lady June uttered under her breath, enough for Violet to tear her gaze away, noting the warning look in Lady June’s eyes as she beckoned for her to follow and Violet had no choice.

Understanding the punishment that would follow if she refused. For the next seven months she had no choice but to stay in line.

She had just turned around to leave with Lady June hurrying behind her when Cain finally looked at her.

Long enough that if Violet had glanced back she would have seen the intensity in his eyes as he held onto his partner firmly enough for him not to realize that he was squeezing her hand until she loudly winced.

"Arghh!" she groaned in pain loudly enough for Cain to pull his hand away from hers and instantly apologize.

"I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to!" he whispered in a low voice, ignoring everyone else even as he instantly felt the pain he usually felt, the massive pounding in his head and lungs returning.

Holding Aira’s hand, a witch Vazer had found for him, was the only thing that brought him temporary relief. Standing or sitting beside her also helped, but body contact worked best.

"It’s fine! I understand!" she whispered back with an innocent smile and a gaze that showed far more adoration than Cain was comfortable looking at as he slowly rose to his feet.

Seeing Violet had brought him relief yet also a great sadness that he found difficult to explain. She was still stuck by the side of his parents’ murderer and with the way she acted it was clear that the woman had some sort of control over her.

Having spoken more to Uva, she had also informed him that Lady June had healed him and had most likely asked for something in return.

Something she did not know the details of, something Cain had every intention of getting to the bottom of.

Eldric wanted there to be a king and Cain saw no reason to refuse it, especially since he had plans to become that king. Right after the war with the vampires was over.

Javi needed to die. That much was clearer than even Eldric’s head, which he wanted. freewebnσvel.cøm

Cain got to his feet and moved to leave but he had barely taken a step when Grainger moved in front of him. A wary look lingered in his eyes as Magnus also moved closer, clearly interested in the conversation since Harriet had made it clear where her loyalty lay.

She intended to support Eldric to become king.

"You are surely not going to allow Eldric become king?" Grainger straightforwardly asked without any subtlety in his bones.

"You know what he would do once he becomes king. Forget us being lords, we would all be nothing but his servants! Putty in his hands," he spoke loudly, showing his strong displeasure at having such a thing happen as he looked at Cain.

Magnus kept quiet, leaning against a seat. He had been wounded but he should have healed, yet clearly he was not healing. He did not speak, he simply watched.

"You really have no problems with him becoming King?" Fervor asked, still seated in his chair, leaning back with a frown on his face as he spoke.

"You do know that he sees you as the greatest threat?" he asked, even as Cain instantly responded without a single pause.

"A king can be named but he cannot have any power unless you give it to him," Cain directly told them, not seeing why any of them were so stressed about the title.

While he had bigger plans, plans that involved lots of blood and battle, the thought of it sometimes sent a shudder through his entire body.

"I’m leaving," he told Grainger, who stood in front of him, walking past him as he slid his hands down his black jacket, which he had thrown on while still holding onto Aira, who had been clutching tightly to his arm in fear.

She was young, yes, but sometimes she behaved even more like a child.

Most of them instantly began to get up from their seats, heading out, including Harriet who had remained seated simply to hear whatever was going to be said.

They headed out with Bella walking close behind them all, with her bodyguard Drey sliding his hand into hers to reassure her, which brought a small smile to her face.

The weight of having to inherit her father’s title as lord was heavy, made even heavier by the talks of imminent war. She had not been born when the last war happened but the stories she had read about it were enough for her to wish that another did not exist.

But one of them was indeed killed, most likely by Cain. It would be stupid to expect them not to retaliate,’ she thought to herself, aware that if it had been one of them, they would do the same.
