Chapter 237: Chapter 237 - End of Currway
And thus, Currway was experiencing something he hadn’t felt in over two centuries.
The shadow of death.
His muscles were aching, his mana was depleting faster than it should. The constant assault, the endless pressure, the need to defend from all angles simultaneously was grinding him down.
He couldn’t comprehend it. How could he be so tired? His mind struggled with the concept. How could he be so exhausted by these weaklings?
He couldn’t even rest for a single moment. It was death by a thousand cuts made manifest. He was surrounded by a thousand madmen watching him closely, ready to throw away their lives just to harm him.
Currway turned his head, trying to track a warrior rushing in from his right side. His vision was blurry from all the assaults on his eyes, and yet he had to fight. He sidestepped the sword swing, and drove his claw through the warrior’s torso.
"Power shot." At that time, Vice released a perfect blow he had been preparing for. The arrow flew true, crossing the distance in an instant.
It struck Currway’s right eye dead center, embedding itself in the pupil. He wasn’t even allowed the dignity to scream. He mentally roared in anquish as he quickly took the shaft of the arrow and ripped it out of his eye.
His eye was now blind. It would regenerate enough to see in just a minute, but did he have time?
Several spells exploded against his back, making him stagger, both hands coming up to his face. Blood poured from both eye sockets now, running down his snout, dripping from his jaw.
Lumi’s voice was cold. "Everyone press! Don’t give him a moment to recover! KILL!"
Immediately, the assault became suicidally overwhelming. Whereas before, players worried about friendly fire and their own safety to an extent, it was entirely abandoned as countless arrows and spells came at him.
From warriors to thieves, and even those from the Church of Micheal, they all began closing in, desperate to do damage before Currway died.
Unlike before, where the demon was full of hard, impenetrable scales, at this time his scales were almost entirely destroyed, leaving any random attack capable of truly damaging him.
Currway lashed out wildly at the assault. He caught one warrior with a lucky swipe, killing him instantly.
[Untuck Barel has died]
His tail swept in a circle, catching two players who’d gotten too close.
[Wena Por has died]
[Bet Te has died]
His claws cut through the air where he sensed a thief, killing another.
[Pot Pot has died]
But with his injuries, his effectiveness dropped by at least half. Most of his strikes hit empty air. Many of his defenses were late, reacting to attacks that had already landed.
A sword bit into his back, sinking deeper than any other random blade strike would have just five minutes ago. Every single scale among that section of his back had already fallen off or been destroyed.
An axe chopped into his calf, and immediately afterwards, a spear drove into his shoulder from behind.
Lumi considered the situation. With so many players closing in on Currway, using such a large spell like Void Sphere would only cause immense amounts of collateral damage. And thus, despite still being in Dark Mode, he pivoted his strategy to using the more precise light spells.
"Lance of Light!" He was fully aware he might still hit a player, but it was a small price to pay to continue to harass the demon.
Lena snickered. "Remember this one?~ It looked like it didn’t do anything, but it did!" She then followed it up. "Angelic Wrath!"
Once again, the figure of an angel materialized, stabbing forth. It hit Currway directly in the forehead, leaving a light glowing mark.
Lena stuck her tongue out. "You’ll never know what I did~"
The endless assault continued. And though Currway leapt around and trashed wildly, killing plenty more, he ultimately got weaker and weaker.
By the time the light faded, Currway collapsed to both knees.
His scales were cracked and broken, many torn completely away to expose bleeding flesh beneath. In place of both eyes were a bloody mess, their regeneration continuously negated by the continuous damage. One arm hung useless, the shoulder joint shattered by accumulated damage. Even his tail was half-severed, having taken severe damage.
He could barely move, having lost even his most basic ability to stand. Currway wailed about, trashing in wild movements.
He felt his body beginning give up. That was when extreme panic shot in. He didn’t want to die! He suddenly exclaimed for the first time in a while. "Wait, wait! We can make a deal!"
Currway’s remaining hand reached out blindly, grasping at air, trying to find Lumi’s direction by sound. "We don’t have to fight! Please, think about it! Call your people off!"
Lumi’s didn’t even bother with a proper response. Instead, he replied by casting another spell which landed a clean hit against his forehead. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Currway would only desperately continue to plead. "I told you, we don’t have to fight! Isn’t peace good? Isn’t that what you humans always say? Why did you even conspire to kill me to begin with!?"
With no order to stop from Lumi, the players continued to wail countless attacks on the demon. He could only continue to plead. "Tell me! Tell me why and I’ll make an offer! I have knowledge! I’m centuries old, wouldn’t you like to know the secrets of the past? I can give you power, too! Remember our deal? Still available!"
Seeing no response, he continued, desperately. "I don’t even need the sacrifices, I grant you a portion of my power as your reward for besting me! Or I could teach you demonic techniques no human knows! Just think about it! You already came all this far as you are now, with my boons you will be unstoppable!"
The players ignored him entirely, treating his words as air as their attacks didn’t come the slightest hint slower. "Just listen to me! I know where there is legendary treasure! I know where legends buried their weapons and I knew who left chests full of gold!"
It was as if he wasn’t even speaking. He was entirely ignored as the players continued to hack and slash gleefully.
"Please... what do any of you gain from my death?" Currway’s mind shattered from the sheer impossibility of it. He couldn’t comprehend any of it. Why would anyone, any organization, sacrifice so many people to address a solved issue?
Bargaining gave way to overwhelming rage. The anger consumed him, burning away everything else.
"I hate you!" He screamed, furious. His voice choked from the injuries, making him screech. "None of you benefit from this! I HATE you!"
His claws lashed out blindly, catching a warrior who’d gotten too close. He threw the body with all his remaining strength.
[Har Har has died]
"I hate Lumi for betraying me over nothing!"
"I hate that damn priest girl of his who kept throwing things in my mouth!"
Lena lightly giggled from her position. "I’m such a good person."
Currway snarled, despite his dying state. "I hate you lunatics that smile while dying! You’re all broken, wrong, defective humans! Why don’t you fear death!? What’s wrong with you!?"
He took a deep breath, and under the impact of a dozen simultaneous blows, he collapsed forward, his massive body hitting the forest floor with a heavy thud that shook the ground. He then lay there, still, with only the movement of his chest still breathing, acting as proof of his life.
The players surrounded him but didn’t strike. They waited, weapons ready, looking to Lumi for direction.
Lumi walked through the crowd, players parting before him like water. His boots squelched in the blood-soaked earth as he approached.
He stood directly in front of the fallen demon, looking down at the broken form.
Currway’s breathing was growing shallower by the second. Blood leaked from countless wounds, saturating the dirt below him with blood. "You..." He glared up at Lumi.
In his mind, calculations ran one final time. He could still fight. Granted, he was sure he couldn’t kill Lumi. But the others? He could probably take another dozen humans with him before he died. Maybe more if he was strategic, and used his remaining strength wisely.
But what was the point?
He’d lost. The outcome was decided. There was no escape. He would die, and no matter what he did, that was that. After over a century of existence, death had finally caught up to him.
"I’m... tired." The demon’s body relaxed slightly as he finally accepted his fate, leaving his body to die. "So tired... of fighting... of being sealed... of being alone in the dark..."
Currway’s eyes closed gently. His chest rose one final time, then stopped. As soon as he truly accepted his death, his body stopped fighting against the thousands of injuries and let itself fall.
Currway had died.
