Chapter 27: Ch 26: The Confession Train On Bridge VIII

The burning Howitzer Impact slammed into Spider-Gwen like a meteor.

BOOOOOOOOM!

For one horrible moment, the world became nothing but fire and agony.

The spinning vortex of explosive heat and concussive shockwaves tore into her with zero mercy. Heat seared through her suit like it was tissue paper, scorching her skin in a dozen places at once.

The sheer, crushing pressure of the blast slammed against her chest.

CRACK.

Two of her ribs fractured under the intense physical weight of the explosion.

The agony was completely overwhelming her nervous system. Her vision flickered, turning pitch black as she lost consciousness, her limp body falling through the air.

When Gwen opened her eyes, she was still falling.

BZZZZZZ!

Her spider-sense screamed.

Above her, the sky was still smoking. And descending toward her at breakneck speed, fists raised, was Veritas. That creepy clown mask staring right through her.

"Ugh..." Gwen groaned, her entire body screaming in protest. Every breath sent knives through her cracked ribs. Her arms were covered in burns. Her hood was half-charred. "Okay... note to self... don’t let the Mr. Creep turn into a fire tornado..."

She felt incredibly weak; the heavy damage from the Howitzer Impact had drained her strength, making her muscles feel like lead.

She crossed her arms again. It was all she could do.

Luke plummeted toward her, wind roaring past his mask. He pulled his right arm back, fist glowing with heat.

He threw the punch.

BAM!

His fist slammed into her crossed arms. The force shuddered through her broken body, and Gwen bit down a scream. Her arms felt like they were going to snap.

She glanced down. ’Not good. Not good. Not good.’

The bridge was rushing up to meet them. Fast. Too fast. At this rate, even if he didn’t kill her, the fall definitely would. The train carriages below looked like matchboxes, growing larger by the second.

Luke pulled his other arm back. Another blast charging up.

Gwen gritted her teeth behind her mask. ’No more blocking. I have to counter.’

She raised her crossed arms again, pretending she was going to play defense just like before. Veritas took the bait, throwing his arm forward in a powerful straight punch.

’Now.’

Instead of blocking, she moved.

With the agility that only a spider could manage, Gwen twisted her body sideways. His punch whistled past her ear. Her right hand shot out and latched onto his wrist like a vice.

Veritas’s eyes widened behind his mask. Before she could do anything else, he fired a desperate blast from his free hand.

BOOM!

But Gwen was faster, she violently twisted her body sideways in mid-air. The explosive beam narrowly missed her shoulder.

Using his grabbed arm as leverage, she pulled herself forward and launched a brutal, haymaker punch straight into his face.

SMACK!

Luke shook his head, as he tasted more blood in his mouth.

Gwen looked down again. Five hundred meters. Four hundred. The bridge was coming too fast.

Luke looked down too.

’We’re both going to die,’ he realized.

He wasn’t crazy enough for that.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

He fired rapid, controlled blasts below them, each explosion slowing their descent just a little. Just enough.

Three hundred meters.

Two hundred.

One hundred.

’Now.’ Gwen shoved off him with everything she had left, launching herself toward the bridge structure.

THWIP!

A line of webbing shot out and latched onto a support beam. She swung in a long, wide arc, the momentum bleeding off as she circled around.

But just as she began to think she was safe, her spider-sense flared up violently again.

"This is payback!" a voice called out.

Veritas was suddenly right there in front of her, having used a powerful, angled blast to intercept her mid-swing.

He spun his body horizontally through the air and delivered a brutal, heavy spinning kick right to her face. Just like she had done a few moments before...

The difference between Gwen’s and Veritas’s spinning kicks was just that Gwen held back while he put all the power he had into it.

BAM!

The kick shattered her momentum completely. Gwen let go of the web, her body shooting downward like a skipped stone.

She crashed heavily onto the metal grating of the railway tracks. She bounced once, twice, and drifted a long distance, her suit tearing against the rusted tracks before she finally skidded to a complete halt.

"haahh... haah... hhaaaah...."

She panted heavily, laying sprawled out on her back. Her chest heaved painfully with every single breath she took. Multiple fractures, hundreds of painful burns, and a pounding headache.

Every part of her body ached so much she felt like she could pass out at any moment. She tried to push herself up, but her arms trembled and collapsed beneath her. Her body simply couldn’t muster any energy to get back up again.

A shadow fell over her.

Veritas landed with a light tap of his boots, standing right on top of the single train carriage parked in the middle of the bridge—the very carriage carrying the hostages.

Luke looked down at the beat-up Spider-Woman.

Her suit was torn open in multiple places, exposing a bare, scorched abdomen, and burnt arms and thighs that trembled even while she lay still. Her chest rose and fell in ragged, shallow gasps.

Luke let out a deep, heavy sigh. Beneath his creepy clown mask, his expression softened. There was a part of him that felt a tiny bit guilty. But it was all for TP, the continuous donation rings were a proof that the more ruthless the fight was the more TP he earned.

’1 minute 15 seconds more to fulfill the minimum time duration... it’s time to wrap things up.’ Luke thought, ’Let’s see what she does next... Get up, Gwen. I know you have it in you...’ freewebnøvel.coɱ

He slowly sat down on the edge of the train carriage roof, letting his legs dangle over the side. He looked down at her not with malice, but with a strange, tragic pity.

"You know, Spider-Woman," Veritas said, his voice unusually quiet."There is one thing I didn’t tell the father during my confession earlier today."

Gwen groaned, her eyes half-open, watching him through the cracked white lenses of her mask.

"When I first obtained these powers..." Luke continued, staring at his palms. They weren’t glowing anymore. They just looked like ordinary hands. "The very first thing I did was tell my father about it. I was thirteen. Young. A complete fool."

He let out a dry, bitter chuckle.

"I thought he would be amazed. I thought I was special. But that day was the first time in my entire life that I saw fear in his eyes. Pure, primal fear. He was terrified of me... his own son. The same son he used as an ashtray, burning me with lit cigarettes for five whole years."

Luke’s voice dropped, turning sharp and cold. "He almost beat me to death that day. He grabbed a metal pipe and just kept swinging. Because he thought the monster was... me."

"That day, I learned a very important lesson about human nature," Luke said, gesturing broadly to the glowing city skyline of New York. "People fear everything that is extraordinary. Everything they cannot control. Like you. Like me. Like the mutants."

He leaned forward.

"Their fear quickly turns to hatred. But they are clever, aren’t they? They mask their hatred in such a way that it seems like common sense. I mean, did you even know that ’mutant’ is a derogatory term? Yes. That is the terrifying extent to which they have normalized their bigotry."

Luke stood up slowly, jumped off of the carriage, and walked towards her.

"This world doesn’t deserve people like you, Spider-Woman. They don’t deserve Charles Xavier and his endless, naive patience. They just use you. They cheer for you when you bleed for them, and they hunt you the second you make a mistake."

He reached out a hand toward her, an open invitation.

"The people of this city need a harsh wake-up call to see the reality of their own dark, black hearts. They need to see the truth: that we are not their protectors. We are not their slaves. And if we do protect them. Then they should be thankful for who we are and what we do for them. They should praise us. Whorship us."

"And even if we don’t want to put out lives in danger for them, so what? We, just like them, deserve to live in this world in peace, without hiding behind these stupid masks."

Luke’s voice wavered, genuine emotion bleeding through his persona.

"Don’t you want a world like that too? A world where you can take off that hood? Where you can go to your father, tell him about how extraordinary you are, and get praised for it? Instead of getting looked at with fear, animosity, and that horrible look of betrayal..."

He kept his hand extended.

"Join me, Spider-Woman. Together, we shall fix this broken world."

Gwen’s body was shattered. Every single nerve screamed in agony. But her spirit was untouched. Her fingers twitched, gripping the cold steel grating of the tracks beneath her.

Slowly, agonizingly, she started to get up...

Through the cracked lens of her mask, she glared up at the Jester.

Luke knew she would get up... every freaking Spider-Hero always, always gets up. No matter how much beaten down they are.

’She’s just so damn cool!’

Again... Luke freaking knew she would get up. And yet... and yet he couldn’t control his emotion witnessing this scene in front of him. He felt literal goosebumps...

"Never..." Gwen spoke, her voice raspy, biting down on the immense pain in her cracked ribs. "The world doesn’t need fixing..."

"...It just needs to be saved from lunatics like you."
