Chapter 22: Ch 22: The Confession Train On Bridge IV
High above the sky, Spider-Woman let go of her web, soaring through the air.
She was incredibly uneasy. She had no idea what was happening inside that train carriage now.
The stream had stopped a couple of minutes ago, right after that horrifying reveal and that devilish opening mouth.
As she swung closer, the train carriage came into view.
But then, her spider-sense tingled. Not on the train. Above.
She looked up.
There he was. Standing casually at the very highest point of the bridge’s steel arch was Veritas. His one hand was gripping a rope that stretched horizontally across the bridge’s peak. freёwebnovel.com
Dangling from the left end of the rope was Father Patrick Sein, struggling and screaming as he hung over the deadly drop to the river below.
Dangling from the right end of the same rope, tied tightly together, were two nuns and a deacon. They were sobbing, terrified.
It was a wicked, human seesaw. And Veritas was the only thing keeping them from falling.
Thwip-thwip!
Two webs shot to opposite sides of the bridge. Gwen catapulted upward, the wind screaming past her ears.
Her spider-sense flared again.
BOOM! BOOM!
Two massive, fiery explosions erupted in mid-air, blocking her path.
Gwen quickly shot a web to her right, swinging out of the blast radius and redirecting her momentum. She landed smoothly, crouching on one of the steel pillars of the bridge.
She looked up. She was about thirty feet below the peak. Thirty feet away from Veritas.
Veritas looked down, that Jester mask tilting. "Spider-Woman. Right on time."
She tensed, ready to spring.
"Before today’s discussion," he continued, "I wanted to try something. To correct a past failure."
He paused, shifting his grip on the rope.
"Last time, my heartfelt words couldn’t make you see the truth. That not everyone deserves to be saved." He gestured to the struggling priest on one end, then to the sobbing nuns and deacon on the other. "Words failed. So now, I’ll force the lesson."
His single hand gripping the rope glowed.
"One end, Patrick Sein. You’ve seen what kind of man he is. The other end, Sarah, Mary, and Robbert. Three truly innocent souls." The glow brightened. "You can only save one side."
The rope burned through with a small blast.
"Choose."
Both sides dropped.
"No—!"
She didn’t think. Her body just moved.
Gwen dove right, her hand stretched out, fingers grasping for the burning rope end.
Missed.
The rope slipped past her fingertips by inches.
"Crap!"
Thwip!
The strand caught the deacon’s back. With her other hand, she shot a second line toward the bridge’s steel frame. She gritted her teeth, using her own body as an anchor to swing the three hostages in a wide, downward arc.
The g-force was intense, but by swinging them instead of stopping them instantly, she saved their necks from snapping.
She reached the other side of the bridge and, without stopping, twisted her body mid-air, flipping backwards. She fired multiple web-shots to pin the trio’s rope securely to the steel. Letting them hang like.
Before her flip even finished, she pushed off the metallic pillar with both feet, diving straight down like a missile.
’Well, even if this guy is a freaking monster, I can’t let Veritas kill him. He needs to serve whatever punishment is decided for him... in Court!’ Gwen thought as she tucked her arms to speed up her descent to the absolute limit, her hand reaching out for the falling priest.
As Patrick Sein saw Gwen’s hand reaching for him, a wave of sickening relief washed over him. He actually smiled. "Save me, Spider-Woman!"
’Thank God!’ Patrick thought wildly, still falling, ’Thank God I’m going to be saved. And thank God that masked lunatic didn’t reveal everything!’
If Veritas had exposed what he had really done in the dark... The things he did to the children at the church orphanage... his life would be over. A mob would tear him apart before the police even got to him.
’With the things he revealed, I’ll be out in no time. They’d think it was just human trafficking that I did.’ Patrick sneered internally as Gwen’s hand reached closer and closer to his. ’The people I work for aren’t ordinary. We have judges. We have politicians. We are everywhere. Cut off one head, and two more shall take its place...’
What Patrick didn’t know was that his life was already completely over. Luke had already anonymously dumped every sick, unspeakable thing Patrick had done to those orphaned boys and girls before handing them over to Stern. The things that would make a normal person vomit...
Every photo, every video, every document, and every email... was already spreading like wildfire for the whole world to see.
He just didn’t show everything in the stream, you see, the time is very limited after all. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
The only thing Luke hadn’t released was proof of Patrick’s connection to Hydra.
Well, even if he wanted to, he couldn’t. After all, there was just nothing he could find on them. Heck, the only reason he found out about this disgusting priest was that he was looking into Hydra and met a dead end.
If Hydra could be exposed, if all their data could be made public. If the Avengers moved into action to clear Hydra bases, then there was a possibility that Luke could have claimed one for himself in that chaos. He would have removed the occupied base’s data from the archives or done something else to keep it hidden.
The chaos and the donations he would have earned from the crazy reveal could have been such a bonus!
But alas, he found nothing concrete, nothing of value.
Gwen was close now. 15 feet.
Thwip!
A web string shot from her shooter. It connected dead center to Patrick’s chest.
"Got you, you piece of shit!" Gwen said.
"I’m saved!" Patrick cheered, "Thank you, Spider-Wom—"
But then Patrick’s eyes widened.
Not at her. Above her.
A shadow fell over them both. A blur of black and white descending faster than should have been physically possible.
VERITAS
He dropped past Gwen so close she felt the rush of displaced air.
"You cannot cheat the rules I make, Spider-Woman."
His voice was calm.
"I told you to choose one side."
He reached Patrick first. And with his palm explosion, he changed direction to face upwards.
His gloved hands settled on either side of the priest’s head, gentle as a blessing.
"And you already chose one."
"No no NOO-" Patrick yelled in panic.
BOOOOOM!
Patrick’s ugly scream disappeared in the beautiful sound of Veritas’s explosion.
