Chapter 355: Chapter 201: The Groom and Bride Enter the Bridal Chamber
Afterward, Lu Yuan even asked, "Honey, I never see you training. How are your Martial Arts and Techniques getting so much stronger?"
Su Liyan explained, "As members of the Half-demon Race, we have inherited memories. The strength of our abilities varies, but even if we rarely train, they’ll slowly improve on their own."
Su Liyan was telling the truth. The Little Fox also had Talent Skills, but there was still a gap between one Half-Demon and another.
"Oh, right. I found a matchmaker for my brother," Su Liyan said with a straight face. "Even though he and Xiaoqian fell in love on their own, we still have to observe the proper customs—an order from the parents and a word from the matchmaker."
A while ago, when Su Liyan went back to her hometown, Su Changliang had brought Xiaoqian home with him.
Xiaoqian had gone with Su Changliang to meet his parents.
Since Xiaoqian was an orphan, some of the pre-wedding customs weren’t followed as strictly as local tradition dictated.
Su Changliang’s parents weren’t picky about such things.
Back then, their family home only had two heated brick beds, so Xiaoqian slept with Su Liyan, while Su Changliang slept with his parents.
A woman wasn’t supposed to sleep in the same room as a man before they were properly married.
Though Xiaoqian was no longer a virgin, she was extremely mindful of propriety.
Now that no one was forcing her, Xiaoqian could finally be in control of her own life.
Su Changliang hadn’t told his father much, only that Xiaoqian was a poor orphan.
Su Liyan’s mother had already learned about the situation back when she was at the Zhao Mansion.
As for Su Liyan’s father, he didn’t much care about the details. As long as the young couple could build a life together and carry on the Su Family line, he was happy. His standards for a daughter-in-law weren’t high; he’d even come to terms with her not being from the Human Race.
Back in Changliu Village, Su Liyan had taken the initiative to find a matchmaker for Su Changliang—the very same one who had originally set her up with her husband.
Su Liyan figured she could use this opportunity to properly thank the matchmaker for her help back then.
Lu Yuan wholeheartedly agreed with his wife’s idea. "That’s the right way to do it," he said. "Do we know what day the wedding is?"
Su Liyan went on, "We had a Daoist from Dou Shi Temple look at the calendar for us. The sixth of next month is an auspicious day; otherwise, we’d have to wait until next year."
Lu Yuan chuckled. "I doubt our dear brother-in-law has the patience to wait until next year. Even if they’ve only known each other for a short while, getting married early next month should be fine."
Lu Yuan thought to himself, ’I can wait until after Su Changliang gets married before heading to Yandu to collect my share of the profits from Gu Gaoxu.’
Su Liyan nodded. "You’re right. That boy’s head is in the clouds these days. All he can think about is Xiaoqian marrying him."
"By the way, Honey, did you happen to see Daoist Longchuan when you went to Dou Shi Temple? I don’t think I’ve seen him in ages."
Lu Yuan thought back to when he had first arrived. In those days, he had relied heavily on Daoist Longchuan to subdue demons and exorcise evil spirits.
Su Liyan thought for a moment. "I didn’t see him," she said. "He’s probably off wandering the world by now."
Having witnessed Su Liyan’s true power, Daoist Longchuan felt he could no longer remain in Taiping City. He had basically scared himself into running off to try his luck elsewhere.
At the end of the month, Lu Yuan ordered the kitchen to prepare a feast and called Su Changliang over from the County Yamen.
Lu Yuan seated his brother-in-law next to him and poured the young man a cup of fruit wine.
This gesture from Lu Yuan left Su Changliang a bit flustered. He quickly steadied the wine cup with his hand, stammering his thanks, "Thank you, Brother-in-law!"
Xiaoqian, sitting on Su Changliang’s other side, covered her mouth in a graceful smile, amused that he was still so endearingly awkward.
In the time she had been there, Xiaoqian had managed to get on very good terms with everyone in the Zhao Mansion, and she was well-liked by all.
By contrast, it was Su Changliang who seemed a little stiff.
Lu Yuan raised his cup. "Changliang," he began, "the sixth of next month is your big day. How are the wedding preparations coming along?"
Su Changliang replied, "I’ve used the salary I saved over the past two years to buy some necessities. In a few days, I’ll head back to our hometown to set everything up for the wedding."
Su Changliang had always lived in the County Yamen while in Taiping City; he didn’t have a courtyard home of his own.
Housing in Taiping City was quite expensive. On his current salary, assuming he remained an honest official, it would probably take Su Changliang several more years to afford a small courtyard home.
Su Liyan had thought about helping her brother with a few silver taels, but she didn’t earn any money of her own, and it didn’t feel right to use her husband’s or the Zhao Mansion’s funds to subsidize him.
Su Liyan understood propriety. Some things weren’t her call to make, and she wasn’t the type of sister to spoil her brother blindly at others’ expense. Of course, she knew her husband would agree in a heartbeat if she only asked.
Lu Yuan drained his cup. "Come on," he said. "As your brother-in-law, how could I let you go all the way back to your hometown to get married? When Xiaoqian marries you, where is she going to live? Are you moving back to the family home in Changliu Village, or are you going to live in the County Yamen?"
"Well..." Su Changliang held up his empty cup, unsure what to say. This was, indeed, a problem he had to face.
Xiaoqian, however, tried to smooth things over. "Brother-in-law, we don’t mind," she said. "We’ll be happy living anywhere."
Lu Yuan held up a hand, interrupting her. "You’re our sister now, and Changliang is our brother-in-law. You’re family. And as his brother-in-law, I won’t let your wedding be such a simple affair."
After speaking, Lu Yuan pulled a ring of keys from within his robes and pressed it into Su Changliang’s hand. "This is just a little something from your brother-in-law," he said. "A new home for you two lovebirds."
"This... I can’t. I can’t accept this."
Zhao Qiao’Er and Song Meiqin, sitting to one side, chimed in as well, "Go on and take it, just take it..."
Su Changliang looked to his sister. He couldn’t make such a major decision on his own, and at that moment, Su Liyan was essentially acting as his elder. She gave him a nod.
"Take it!" Lu Yuan insisted, shoving the keys into Su Changliang’s hand. "You’re an official, not a merchant—you don’t have money. We can’t have our little sister be treated unfairly." He then added, "This afternoon, I’ll take you two to see the new place."
