Chapter 88: Chapter 88: Inviting Her to Dinner

"Are you going to keep squatting there?" Anne Sutton asked. "Come on up and sit for a bit. That must be tiring."

"What if they find me?"

He peeked his head out, glancing around furtively.

"Are you planning to hide here forever?" Anne Sutton said. "If you go out and get your shot now, this will all be over."

"No," Ian said. "When my dad realizes I’m gone, he’ll come find me!"

"Aren’t you afraid a bad person might find you hiding like this? What if they carry you away?"

"But you don’t seem like a bad person." He looked at Anne Sutton, feeling an unexpected sense of warmth from her.

Anne Sutton smiled.

Before long, Vera Wells came in, and Ian scrambled back under the table in fright. "Holy crap!" Vera exclaimed. "Something huge just went down at the hospital."

"What happened?"

"Dr. Linden’s grandson ran off while he was supposed to get a shot. Now everyone’s looking for him."

Hearing "Dr. Linden," Anne Sutton froze for a second. "You mean... Anna Linden?"

"Yeah, who else could it be?" Vera said. "It’s pretty strange, you know. Back in the day, the rumor was that her son fell off a cliff during a trip. Who knew he’d turn up not only alive and well, but with a son this old." frёewebnoѵēl.com

Anne Sutton instantly thought of Ethan Linden. ’So... this little guy is Ethan Linden’s son?’

’Was the call he made this morning to this little thing hiding under my desk?’

She recalled Ethan Linden’s rather unpleasant demeanor, but his son was just too adorable.

Anne Sutton looked at the little boy and said, "Ian."

Vera Wells glanced at her. "How do you know his name?"

Ian had already stood up.

When Vera Wells saw the little boy, she said in surprise, "So he was hiding here with you!"

"Go get your shot," Anne Sutton said. "Aren’t you supposed to see your dad tonight? If you keep hiding, he’ll have to come looking for you, and if he can’t finish his work, he won’t be able to have dinner with you."

Ian’s eyes widened when he heard her. "That... actually makes a lot of sense. But how did you know I’m having dinner with my dad tonight?"

"..." Anne Sutton felt a bit awkward, remembering that she was the reason his father hadn’t come home last night.

’She suddenly felt a pang of guilt.’

"I guessed," she said.

"But I’m really scared of shots," Ian said.

"I’ll go with you," Anne Sutton said. "I know a way to make it not hurt."

"Really?" Ian looked at Anne Sutton curiously.

"Let’s go!" Anne Sutton said.

She led Ian to the injection area outside.

A servant from the Linden Family was looking for him everywhere. Seeing him, they rushed over. "Young Master, where did you run off to?"

"Let’s get his shot first," Anne Sutton said.

Ever since she lost her own child, she had been especially patient with all children.

...

The colleague in charge of giving Ian his shot saw Anne Sutton and nodded.

Ian sat down.

"Close your eyes," Anne Sutton said.

"It still hurts even if I close them. I’ve tried before," Ian said, his voice soft.

"It won’t. Trust me," Anne Sutton said.

She sat beside him and said to the nurse, "I’ll count to three, and then the nurse will give you the shot. Three, two..."

Before she reached "one," the needle was already in.

By the time Ian realized what had happened, the shot was over.

His eyes flew open. He looked at Anne Sutton and yelled, "You’re a liar!"

"But it really didn’t hurt, right?" She took a cotton swab and pressed it against the spot where he’d gotten the shot.

"You’re a mean lady! You tricked me," Ian said.

He had trusted her so much!

"That hurts my feelings, Ian!" Anne Sutton said. "I thought we were friends! Friends can joke around a little; you shouldn’t mind! But if you really do mind, then I was wrong. I’m sorry."

Hearing her words, Ian looked at her and said, "Fine. I forgive you!"

"Thank you, Ian." Anne Sutton found he was a very easy child to soothe. "Congratulations, you’re done with your shot! Now you can go have dinner with your dad tonight!"

Just then, a stern voice called out from behind them, "Ian!"

Anne Sutton looked up and saw Nathan Fawcett standing there.

He saw Ian. He had rushed over after hearing his son had gone missing. He never expected to arrive at the hospital and find Anne Sutton with Ian!

’This woman...’

’What is she trying to do?’

When Ian saw Nathan Fawcett, he said, "So you finally decided to show up!"

Even though he’d hidden specifically to make his dad come find him.

Nathan Fawcett walked over and picked him up. "Are you trying to worry me to death? I tell you to get one shot, and you run all over the place."

Even though his mother was at the hospital, Anna Linden was always busy with work and didn’t have much time to look after Ian.

That’s why Nathan had to rush over himself!

’Thank God he’s okay!’

Ian looked at him and said, "Well, you’re the one who didn’t come home to be with me yesterday."

Nathan Fawcett lifted his head and glanced at Anne Sutton.

The moment his gaze landed on her, Anne Sutton was hit with a wave of guilt.

After all, she was the reason he hadn’t come home last night!

Nathan Fawcett asked Anne Sutton, "What are you doing here?"

’She really is everywhere!’

Nathan was now even starting to suspect that she was deliberately scheming to get close to him.

"My friend’s in the hospital, so I came to help out," Anne Sutton said. "And then I ran into your son."

Ian looked at Anne Sutton and introduced her to Nathan Fawcett. "This is my new friend. She’s really nice to me!"

Ian was a very reserved child and didn’t usually warm up to people.

And yet here he was, saying that Anne Sutton was really nice to him!

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton. "Is that so?"

"It’s best for a parent to be there when a child gets a shot," Anne Sutton said. "I know you’re very wealthy and can afford servants, but if you leave Ian in their care all the time, he’s bound to feel some type of way about it."

It was clear that Ian was very dependent on his father but also felt his father was too busy, which was why he acted out.

Anne Sutton couldn’t help but speak her mind.

"Thank you for the advice, Ms. Sutton," Nathan Fawcett said to Anne Sutton.

Although that’s what he said, Anne Sutton could tell from his tone that he wasn’t exactly receptive.

"Well, it’s none of my business anyway," Anne Sutton said. "I’ll be going now."

She was about to leave when Ian suddenly grabbed her hand.

Anne Sutton turned back to look at the little boy. "Ian, what’s wrong?"

Ian said to Anne Sutton, "I want to treat you to a meal! Can I?"

Hearing his words, Anne Sutton subconsciously glanced at Nathan Fawcett.

She could sense that Nathan Fawcett was not friendly toward her.

"No, I can’t..." Anne Sutton started.

"What, my son invites you to dinner and you won’t even grant him that courtesy?" Nathan Fawcett said.

’It should be her honor to eat with Ian!’

Honestly, if it were up to Nathan Fawcett, he would rather they never met again for the rest of their lives.

After all, if he hadn’t brought Ian back then, the little guy wouldn’t even be in this world anymore.

But when he thought about how Ian had grown up all these years without a mother, Nathan Fawcett felt his son’s situation was pitiful.
