Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Are You Afraid?
Comparing him to Charles Prescott, they really were two completely different kinds of people. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Charles Prescott always said he liked her, but he only dared to say it when they were alone.
Not like Nathan Fawcett...
He didn’t care about saying such things, even in front of other people.
’When she thought about it, Anne realized how ridiculous her long engagement to Charles Prescott had been!’
’But she also knew Nathan probably said that because he genuinely found Stella Shields annoying, not because he actually liked her.’
She finished cooking, brought the food out, placed it on the table, and said to Nathan Fawcett, "Time to eat."
The man on the sofa didn’t respond, so Anne had no choice but to walk over and shake him gently.
He opened his eyes, glanced at her, and asked, "Is it ready?"
"We can eat now." Anne glanced at his IV bottle. "The drip is finished, too. I’ll take it out for you."
After she spoke, she skillfully removed the needle.
Then she helped him over to the table to eat.
Stella Shields trailed behind Charles Prescott, saying, "Didn’t you tell me that Nathan Fawcett doesn’t like Anne Sutton?"
Charles Prescott turned back and glanced at her. "And didn’t you tell me you knew Nathan Fawcett before? That you two were on good terms?"
Hearing Charles Prescott’s words, Stella Shields said, "We were! He knew my older brother, and he’d come over to my house to play. He was always nice to me. How was I supposed to know he wouldn’t recognize me at all now? Look, if you don’t believe me, I even have a photo of us together."
After speaking, Stella Shields opened her phone and showed it to Charles Prescott. It was a childhood photo. Nathan Fawcett looked to be only thirteen or fourteen at the time.
Charles Prescott was taken aback. That was definitely Nathan Fawcett...
His family had a lot of photos of Nathan from his school days.
Charles Prescott asked, "So, did you show him the photo?"
Stella Shields shook her head. "No, he didn’t give me a chance! He just wanted to kick me out. And from what I saw, he’s so good to that Ms. Sutton! He doesn’t like me at all. It actually makes me pretty sad!"
After all, she had come to see Nathan Fawcett full of anticipation. She was excited to see an old acquaintance—the "big brother" she’d adored as a child. She wouldn’t have even cared that he was sick.
But not only does he not remember me at all, he was mean to me and kept defending that other woman.
Charles Prescott said, "Give me the photo. I’ll send it to him later and ask about it."
"Okay," Stella Shields replied.
...
Before the meal, Nathan Fawcett had worn a pained expression.
But once he finally tasted Anne Sutton’s cooking, his features softened.
Anne Sutton asked, "Do you really know that Ms. Shields?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "I have no memory of her! Why would I have the energy to care about other people?"
At this, he looked up at her. "Why are you asking?"
"Just asking!" Anne Sutton said. "She seemed so familiar with you, I thought you two had a history. It made me feel like the other woman." freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m never intimate with women, so there’s no way anything could have happened with her. As for being the other woman... you’re my wife now, the one who’s legally protected. If anyone’s the ’other woman,’ it’s her."
"..." Anne Sutton chuckled, resting her chin in her hand as she looked at Nathan Fawcett. "You’re just saying that! How could you have never been intimate with a woman? All men like to use that line to make themselves sound good."
"Believe it or not!" Nathan Fawcett said. "But even if I did have a lot of women on the side, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with you. I wonder who it was that told me to go find a few more?"
Anne Sutton stiffened, silenced by Nathan Fawcett’s retort.
She picked up her spoon and drank her soup.
Nathan Fawcett glanced at her crestfallen expression. ’She seems jealous,’ he thought. Seeing her like this gave him a surprising sense of satisfaction.
After they finished eating, Anne Sutton helped Nathan Fawcett upstairs. He lay down, and she took his temperature. Just as she was about to leave, there was a knock on the door.
She looked up and saw Charles Prescott standing in the doorway.
’He’s back again.’ Anne had no idea what he was thinking.
Charles Prescott looked at Nathan Fawcett, then said to Anne Sutton, "You can go. I have something to discuss with Uncle."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. He didn’t object, which she took as agreement with Charles Prescott.
So, Anne Sutton stood up.
After she left, Charles Prescott closed the door.
Lying in bed, Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott and asked, "What is it?"
It was clear Charles Prescott had something he was eager to say.
Charles Prescott sat down. "After I left just now, Stella Shields was crying for a long time. So, I came back on her behalf to confirm with you, Uncle. Did you two really not know each other in the past?"
Nathan Fawcett said to Charles Prescott, "Are you really tired of your job? I thought I made myself perfectly clear today!"
Charles Prescott said, "Don’t be angry, Uncle. It’s just... there’s a photo I’d like to show you."
With that, he pulled up the photo on his phone. "Take a look. Does this ring a bell?"
Nathan Fawcett was about to tell Charles Prescott to get lost when he saw the two people in the photo. He froze, his expression tightening.
Seeing him freeze, Charles Prescott felt a surge of confidence. ’Looks like this photo really works.’ "She kept saying she knew you and even showed me this photo. The person in it is you, isn’t it, Uncle? The young lady cares a lot about you. You two must have known each other. It’s just... why don’t you remember now, Uncle?"
"Where is she?" Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott.
Charles Prescott replied, "I had her rest in the main house. If you need her, Uncle, I can ask her to come over."
"Have her come over," Nathan Fawcett said.
Seeing that he really wanted to see Stella Shields, Charles Prescott smiled as if he could see a glimmer of hope again. "I’ll call her right now."
Anne Sutton was already downstairs. After coming home to cook, on top of spending all of yesterday busy at the hospital, she was now a bit tired.
She had just lain down on the sofa for a moment and was about to fall asleep when she heard the butler leading Stella Shields in. "Ms. Shields, please!"
She opened her eyes and saw that the girl Nathan Fawcett had just kicked out was back again.
Stella Shields glanced at Anne Sutton and gave a slight nod before following the butler upstairs.
Anne Sutton’s expression darkened. ’The butler would never have brought her up without Nathan’s permission.’
’What’s gotten into Nathan?’
’What did Charles Prescott say to him?’
’That bastard Charles is really pulling out all the stops just to spite me!’
After Stella Shields went up, Charles Prescott came down soon after. Seeing her sitting there, he said, "Uncle called Ms. Shields up. How come you don’t look worried at all?"
"What would I be worried about?" Even if Nathan Fawcett really did choose another woman, it had nothing to do with her.
Perhaps because her arrangement with Nathan was just a transaction, she wouldn’t have cared even if he had ten other women by his side.
The one who truly angered Anne Sutton was Charles Prescott.
Anne Sutton looked at him. "Mr. Prescott, are you getting scared?"
