Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Pain Relief

He didn’t sound at all like a son speaking to his father.

Chairman Fawcett said, "Fine! But..."

"But what?" Nathan Fawcett arched a brow.

Chairman Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton. He wanted to say something, but with Nathan Fawcett right there, he thought better of it. He was afraid he’d anger his son so much he’d pass out again.

He said, "Alright, I’ll be heading back for today, then. Should I... leave her here to keep you company?"

He wasn’t entirely comfortable with the idea.

But Nathan Fawcett... seemed very protective of Anne Sutton.

Nathan Fawcett said, "Just go."

Chairman Fawcett said, "I’ll be on my way, then."

And with that, Chairman Fawcett left.

Sean Sutton glanced at Anne Sutton. He had originally planned to take her home, but if even Chairman Fawcett was powerless, he certainly didn’t dare to object.

He spoke to Anne Sutton, admonishing her, "Stay here at the hospital and keep Mr. Fawcett company. Don’t make him angry again."

Anne Sutton glanced at her father but said nothing.

’As if he had to tell me. It’s not like I want to make Nathan Fawcett angry, is it?’

Just as Sean Sutton was about to leave, Nathan Fawcett called out, "Wait."

Sean Sutton stopped in his tracks and looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Is there something I can do for you?"

Even though this was his son-in-law, Sean Sutton didn’t dare let his guard down in his presence.

Rumor had it he was just a spoiled rich kid, nothing like Charles Prescott.

After all, Charles Prescott was capable of running a company well. Nathan Fawcett, on the other hand, was useless aside from being born into the right family. He wasn’t even healthy!

Nathan Fawcett looked at Sean Sutton. "It seems my father-in-law isn’t fond of me?"

Nathan Fawcett was furious to hear that he had opposed Anne Sutton having his child.

Anne Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett. She had only mentioned it in passing; she hadn’t expected him to remember.

’He wouldn’t hold this against the Sutton Family, would he?’

Hearing this, Sean Sutton stared at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief. He said awkwardly, "How could that be? Of course not! Mr. Fawcett, you’re with Anne now. We’re all family. How could I possibly dislike you!"

Nathan Fawcett listened with a stony expression, and the atmosphere in the room grew heavy with silence.

Even though her father was infuriating, Anne Sutton still felt a little uneasy watching Nathan Fawcett put him on the spot like this.

She was about to speak up, but Nathan Fawcett had already said, "Good. I’m also confident that my father-in-law has no reason to dislike me."

His words carried a passive-aggressive edge, and Sean Sutton mentally wiped a bead of sweat from his brow.

Nathan Fawcett looked at the nearby butler. "See my father-in-law out."

The butler nodded. "Yes, sir."

Then he led Sean Sutton out of the room.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. He had been sitting up just a moment ago, but now he was slowly lying back down. As he did, a vein throbbed on his forehead, as if he was desperately enduring something.

Anne Sutton looked at him. "Are you okay?"

He had run downstairs to find her and then suddenly collapsed. It had truly terrified her.

Nathan Fawcett opened his eyes, glanced at her, and commanded, "Stay by my side. Don’t go anywhere!"

"But..." Anne Sutton began.

When she didn’t agree immediately, his gaze turned sharp in an instant.

Anne Sutton asked, "What I mean is... don’t you need to eat? Aren’t you hungry?"

Chairman Fawcett had knocked over all the food she’d brought earlier.

She had gone downstairs after that, so Nathan Fawcett probably still hadn’t eaten anything.

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and realized that he was indeed hungry.

He found it strange himself. With his poor health, he usually had no appetite. Even if he went a day or two without eating, he wouldn’t feel hungry.

Eating was more of a laborious chore.

But ever since she started cooking for him, he could taste things again. And when he didn’t eat her food, he would feel ravenous.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "How about I go home and make you something to eat? I can bring it back over."

Nathan Fawcett stared at her as if weighing his options, making it impossible to tell whether he would agree or not.

Anne Sutton met his gaze...

Staring into her large eyes, Nathan Fawcett found that he was the one who felt his conviction falter.

He looked away. "No, it’s too late. Just stay here with me."

Hearing this, Anne Sutton had no choice but to sit back down.

She sat beside him, gazing at Nathan Fawcett’s pale face. "Are you really okay? Should I call a doctor to come take a look?"

"What’s the use in calling them?" Nathan Fawcett said. "I’m a dying man. Even if they come, they can’t take the pain away for me."

’It turned out the only meaning left in his life was eating the food she made.’

Anne Sutton said, "Then what should we do? Won’t you feel awful if you don’t eat?"

"It’s fine," Nathan Fawcett said. "I’m used to it."

"Always skipping meals. No wonder you’re so unhealthy," Anne Sutton muttered under her breath as she looked at him.

After a moment, Nathan Fawcett’s strength returned, and the pain became more bearable. He opened his eyes, looked at Anne Sutton, and said, "From now on, don’t pay any mind to whatever my father says to you. Once we have a child, I’ll make him give the Fawcett family inheritance to them."

Anne Sutton nodded.

They had signed an agreement. This was the whole reason they got married.

She looked at Nathan Fawcett and asked curiously, "How can you talk to your dad like that?"

"Like what?" Nathan Fawcett retorted.

Anne Sutton said, "Like just now... calling him by his name, showing him no respect."

His father was Chairman Fawcett, a man everyone else treated with a healthy dose of fear. Yet his own son was so...

Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m his only son. What can he do? He just has to put up with it."

Anne Sutton said, "Also, about my father... he was just being manipulated by Charles Prescott. You won’t hold it against the Sutton family, will you?"

She was a little worried about how Nathan Fawcett viewed the Sutton Family.

Nathan Fawcett glanced at her, knowing what she was worried about. "Can I control what he says to you behind my back? It’s normal for him to look down on me. I really am a dying man, but I don’t care. I’ve never cared what other people think of me. I’m about to die, so why would I care what anyone thinks?"

Anne Sutton looked at him. His tone was completely nonchalant, but she could still sense a trace of desolation in his words.

Seeing her sitting off to the side, Nathan Fawcett said, "Come sit closer."

Anne Sutton looked at the man. She remembered how he had taken the initiative to kiss her that morning, and now he was telling her to move closer. free𝑤ebnovel.com

She remembered how cold he had always been in bed, but now...

’He was so hard to figure out.’

Still, Anne Sutton moved closer, making it easier to talk to him.

As the woman drew near, Nathan Fawcett didn’t say a word. He simply reached out, pulled her into his arms, and held her.

Anne Sutton froze. "Mr. Fawcett, what are you...?"

"It stops the pain."

When he smelled her scent, he found that his pain seemed to ease a little.

’He was surprisingly dependent on this woman!’
