Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Caught Kissing by Charles Prescott

"Of course," Anne Sutton said. "Even if everyone tried to persuade me, I never hesitated. But... why? Why would you rather believe them than believe me? In your eyes, am I that much of a muddle-headed woman? Having a child benefits me. At least I won’t have to defer to him on Sutton Family matters anymore. But if I don’t have this child, if I really agreed with Charles Prescott... once you’re gone, do you really think he’d marry me? I’m not that stupid."

"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her, listening to her analysis, and for a moment, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

’It’s true...’

’I was the one who got it wrong!’

Her goal had always been crystal clear.

She wanted to have his child for the Fawcett Family’s inheritance rights, not because he, as a person, was that important to her.

’From the very beginning, I was just a tool for her to use against Charles Prescott!’

A scheming woman like her would use any means necessary to have his child.

When Anne Sutton saw Nathan Fawcett remain silent, she took out her phone and said, "Let me play something for you. You’ll understand after you hear what Charles Prescott said when I went to see him last night."

She didn’t expect Nathan Fawcett to trust her just because they were husband and wife. Even though they slept together every night, this man had not a single shred of affection for her.

’Only evidence is truly effective.’

Anne played the recording, and Charles Prescott’s voice could be heard, trying to persuade her.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "Did you hear that, Mr. Fawcett? Charles Prescott and I are mortal enemies. At a critical juncture like this, no matter what I choose, I would never choose to use contraception and not have your child."

Nathan Fawcett looked at her but said nothing.

Anne Sutton glanced at him. "Isn’t the recording clear enough?"

’He heard it, but he’s not saying a word.’

Nathan Fawcett watched her anxious to prove her point and said, "I heard it."

"Then what are your thoughts, Mr. Fawcett? I know you trust Charles Prescott a lot; you’re family. However, if your child is born, it will threaten his inheritance. He would never want me to have this child. So even if you are family, I hope you won’t trust his words too much."

Nathan Fawcett said, "He isn’t worthy of my trust, but are you? If one day, I’m gone, will you protect our child at all costs?"

Anne Sutton said, "Of course, I will."

’Besides...’

’I’m not even pregnant yet, and I’m already worrying every day about whether I can even conceive!’

’Isn’t he thinking a little too far ahead?’

Nathan Fawcett said, "Go make some food. I’m hungry."

Seeing that he seemed to believe her, Anne Sutton said, "Then, about Charles Prescott..."

She really wanted to know if Nathan Fawcett would punish him.

She just couldn’t stand Charles Prescott’s arrogance.

Nathan Fawcett said, "I know what I’m doing. You can go."

When Anne Sutton saw that he had no intention of punishing Charles Prescott, she couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.

’But then again...’

’It’s not just Charles Prescott; he has his father, too.’

’He and his father are both trusted aides to Chairman Fawcett.’

’In their eyes, what does it matter if I suffer a little injustice?’

’Why would they punish an heir like Charles Prescott just for me?’ freeweɓnovel.cѳm

’After all, if I can’t get pregnant, everything in the Fawcett Family will still go to Charles Prescott!’

At this thought, Anne Sutton’s desire to get pregnant grew even stronger.

After leaving the hospital, Anne Sutton first went to buy some groceries before returning to the Fawcett residence to cook for Nathan Fawcett.

Once the food was ready, she brought it back to the hospital.

Anne Sutton stood to the side, ladling out the congee as she asked, "Did the doctor say when you can be discharged?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Not yet."

"You weren’t hospitalized because you were mad at me, were you?" Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief.

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. "What do you think?"

"Well, that’s because you insisted on believing Charles Prescott instead of me," Anne Sutton said, muttering as she sat down beside him. She held the bowl and looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Here, let me feed you."

"I can do it myself." Her sudden proximity made Nathan Fawcett a little uncomfortable.

Anne Sutton said, "You’re a patient right now, so I’ll take care of you. If you don’t give me a chance to get on Mr. Fawcett’s good side, who knows when someone else’s words will lead you astray again."

Nathan Fawcett looked up at the woman’s serious little face. When she put on a stern expression, she was actually a bit intimidating.

He said nothing, silently opening his mouth and accepting Anne Sutton’s care.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, wanting to say something, but held back.

Nathan Fawcett said, "What is it? You have something to say, but you’re not saying it?"

Anne Sutton’s eyes darkened. "I couldn’t sleep at all last night. I just felt... that this is all rather meaningless."

"Oh?"

Anne Sutton said, "My dad was swayed by Charles Prescott’s deception and tried to stop me from having your child. I had a falling out with him over it. To me, right now, you’re my only hope. But... you’re more willing to believe Charles Prescott than me. Even though we’re legally married, even though I’m with you... Mr. Fawcett has never treated me as one of his own. That’s why I was so upset all night."

She sounded calm as she said this, but her tone carried a hint of accusation.

Nathan Fawcett was almost mesmerized by her.

’This woman clearly has no feelings for me, she’s just using me as a tool, yet she insists on painting me as her only backer.’

’As if it’s my fault for not defending her!’

’She’s clever, trying to tie her fate to mine the moment she opens her mouth.’

’But damn it, he just couldn’t resist her when she acted like this!’

After all, for so many years, because of his poor health, he had always been the one being protected. This was the first time he had become someone else’s pillar of support.

No man could dislike this feeling of being needed!

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, leaned in, and kissed her directly on the lips.

Anne Sutton, still holding the bowl, was taken aback when he suddenly kissed her.

Her eyes widened as she stared at the man before her. She was with Nathan Fawcett; she’d even given him her first time.

But he had never actually initiated a kiss with her before.

Every time they went to bed, it was just a mechanical task to conceive a child. He showed her no tenderness, as if they were strangers.

For him to kiss her on his own initiative now completely threw her for a loop.

The kiss lasted for a few seconds when the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open. The butler appeared at the doorway, followed by Charles Prescott, who had come to visit Nathan Fawcett. Seeing the scene, both of them froze for a moment.

The sound of the door opening startled Anne Sutton. She turned her head, and upon seeing the two men, her face instantly turned red.

The butler said, "S-Sorry! Please, continue."

Then he closed the door.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, wondering what had gotten into him to suddenly kiss her and make the situation so awkward.

"This is all your fault!" Anne Sutton said.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her shy, girlish appearance and said, "What are you afraid of? Afraid that Charles Prescott saw?"

Anne Sutton had been feeling a little embarrassed, but hearing him say that, she was suddenly no longer flustered. "I’m not afraid! I wish he had seen it!"
