Chapter 163: Chapter 163: If You Didn’t Like Ethan Linden, I Wouldn’t Even Look at You
I had thought that once Anne Sutton knew Nathan Fawcett’s identity, their relationship would change.
Now, it seemed I had been worrying for nothing.
Whether Anne Sutton knew or not, it would never change Nathan Fawcett’s opinion of her!
No matter how you looked at it, she was still the woman who had wanted to get rid of the child back then!
Nathan Fawcett remained silent, but Stella Shields spoke up, deliberately fanning the flames. "Ethan, your dear wife came all this way to see you, and you’re not even going to say hello? What’s wrong, did you two have a fight?"
Anne Sutton glanced at the gloating woman.
’If I had known Stella Shields was here, I wouldn’t have come!’
’Then I wouldn’t have to let her stand here and laugh at me.’
Anne Sutton didn’t hold back, retorting, "Even if we did have a fight, what does that have to do with you? Anyone who knows anything knows you have no relationship with Ethan Linden. But for those who don’t, they might actually think you two are a couple! Then again... after all, during your interviews, whenever reporters asked if you had a relationship with him, you always deliberately let them misunderstand."
In the past, when she saw Stella Shields’s interviews, she had believed everything she said was true.
She had even thought the child was hers.
But only now did she realize that Stella Shields and Nathan Fawcett had no relationship at all.
Although she didn’t know why Nathan Fawcett was so good to her, the two of them weren’t in a relationship—nothing like what the online rumors claimed.
Exposed by Anne Sutton, Stella Shields’s expression grew complicated. But with Nathan Fawcett right there, she turned to Anne and denied it. "I didn’t."
"You know perfectly well whether you did or not." Anne Sutton chuckled. "It’s obvious Ms. Shields has gone to great lengths for Ethan Linden. Why not just have him marry you? You must be looking forward to that, right?"
Anne Sutton was in a bad mood, so she was in no mood to indulge Stella Shields.
Even her usual courtesy toward her was gone.
Stella Shields looked at Anne Sutton. The first two times they had met, Anne had been quite polite.
But now, she was like a machine gun, unloading on her.
’It was true she liked Nathan Fawcett, but she’d never dare say any of this to his face.’
’Every time, she only dared to persuade him from Anna Linden’s perspective.’
Now that Anne Sutton had blurted it all out, she felt incredibly awkward.
"Ms. Sutton, please don’t talk nonsense."
"How am I talking nonsense?" Anne Sutton shot back. "I’m helping you! You’re so devoted to Ethan Linden, don’t you just want to marry him? I’m just saying what’s in your heart for you. Shouldn’t you thank me?"
"I..." Stella Shields glanced at Nathan Fawcett. Seeing him standing there, she felt completely hamstrung.
’After all, if Nathan Fawcett knew she liked him, how would he treat her?’
’She wasn’t so sure anymore!’
’After all, she used to be completely devoted to Ethan Linden. Now that Ethan was gone, her target had switched to him.’
Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton and said, "If you’re done making a scene, you can leave."
Anne Sutton said, "Tsk, is Mr. Linden feeling sorry for her now?"
Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett’s face darkened. "Do you have to be so unreasonable?"
’The moment he opens his mouth, it’s to defend Stella Shields!’
’Stella Shields was the one who started it!’
Anne Sutton looked at him, feeling upset as well.
"How am I being unreasonable?" Anne Sutton said. "Aren’t I doing a good deed? Ms. Shields is so outstanding, she’s more than a match for you. How awkward for her when you don’t know how to appreciate it!"
"Get out now," Nathan Fawcett said in a low voice. "Don’t force me to throw you out."
’Her words were nothing but provocations, and her snide, sarcastic tone made him extremely uncomfortable.’
’He and Stella Shields didn’t have that kind of relationship.’
’He was only being nice to her for Ethan Linden’s sake.’
...
Anne Sutton had made her delivery and had no intention of forcing herself to stay. She said, "I’ll be going now."
With that, she turned and walked straight out of the hospital room.
As she left the room, Anne Sutton’s expression darkened, and she immediately felt vexed.
’She had just wanted to bring the food she’d made and come see Ian, but running into Stella Shields had completely ruined her mood.’
’And she’d made Nathan Fawcett angry, too!’
’He probably thought she was so immature right now!’
...
"Anne." Just then, Justin Shields followed her out.
Anne Sutton glanced at him. "What is it?"
’I just went after his sister so hard. He’s not here to stand up for her, is he?’
Justin Shields said, "I’ll take you home."
"That’s okay, I can get home on my own." She had been living alone for the past few years and was used to it.
"It’s late. You’re a woman out by yourself, let me take you home," Justin Shields said warmly.
Standing in the hospital room, Nathan Fawcett saw Justin Shields follow Anne Sutton out and frowned.
Still fuming from her argument with Anne, Stella Shields waited until Anne was gone before looking at Nathan Fawcett. "Ethan, look at her! She deliberately said those nasty things to try and drive a wedge between us."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at Stella Shields and asked, "These rumors about you and me having a child... you really weren’t the one who spread them?"
Stella Shields stared at Nathan Fawcett, stunned. After a moment, she said in a wronged tone, "Why would you think I was the one who said that? I’m in the entertainment industry. You know what it’s like; those people love to start rumors. I can’t just run out and explain things! That would only make people read more into it."
"It’s true that people in the entertainment industry love to start rumors." Nathan Fawcett didn’t believe her. "But Stella, your Shields Family has its own company, and your brother handles all your affairs. Justin Shields isn’t useless. If you hadn’t given your tacit approval, are you saying he couldn’t shut down those stories?"
"Is that really what you think of me?" Stella Shields looked at him in disappointment. "Is it because of a few words from Anne Sutton? She says a few random things, and you start suspecting me. Isn’t that going a little too far?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m just reminding you."
"A reminder of what?" Stella Shields said. "A reminder that I shouldn’t like you? In fact, your mother hopes we’ll be together, too!"
"She is her own person, and so am I." Nathan Fawcett glanced at Stella Shields. "The person you like is Ethan Linden. I’m not his stand-in. I am myself."
"..." Stella Shields’s hands clenched tightly. She looked at Nathan Fawcett; she hadn’t wanted to talk about these things.
But now, his attitude made her muster up her courage. "Then what if... it’s not Ethan Linden I like, but you?"
She looked at him, her gaze pleading. "Would you like me?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett glanced at her, his eyes turning cold. "You and Ethan Linden knew each other for so long. Can all those years of feelings just vanish like that?"
’When she first appeared before him, it was only because she thought he was Ethan Linden. She had mistaken his identity.’
Stella Shields said, "He’s gone now. Nathan... I..."
"That’s enough." Before she could finish, Nathan Fawcett cut her off. "If you didn’t like Ethan Linden, I wouldn’t have even given you a second glance."
"What did you say?" Stella Shields stared at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief.
’If you didn’t like Ethan Linden, I wouldn’t have even given you a second glance!’
’So, was he really only nice to me because of Ethan Linden?’
...
