Chapter 157: Chapter 157: I Will Be Good to Sharon
"..." Anne Sutton had been so busy with her own affairs these past few years that she’d barely kept in touch with her family and rarely saw Sharon Sutton.
Now that Sharon was pregnant and saying her boyfriend was someone Anne had met before, it took Anne a long time to recall who it might be.
There was only one of Sharon’s boyfriends that she had ever met.
Anne Sutton asked, a little uncertain, "That Hayes fellow?"
Sharon Sutton said, "He’s not a scumbag like he used to be. He’s changed. He’s a good guy, and he treats me really well."
’So, she’d guessed right!’
"..." Anne Sutton stared at her. Perhaps she was just being cynical, but she found it hard to believe that a man who had gotten another girl pregnant in the past could truly turn over a new leaf and become a decent person.
Sharon Sutton must have realized how unconvincing she sounded.
She said to Anne Sutton, "Sis, if you have some time, let’s get a meal together! You’ll understand once you see him. I’m serious. He’s so good to me now. He even uses the money he earns from his job to buy me things. I want to marry him."
"Have you told Mom and Dad?"
"Mom’s not doing well right now, so I don’t dare tell her. And you know Dad’s temper. He’s always hoped I would find a rich man."
Anne Sutton looked at Sharon Sutton and said, "Sharon, you’re still so young. I know Dad can be unreasonable, but... he might not be wrong about this. I really don’t have a good impression of that Hayes fellow."
Sharon said, "But I really like him, and he was just immature before. That’s why he made those mistakes. He’s really wonderful now. If you don’t believe me, you’ll see when you meet him."
Anne Sutton said, "You came all this way today just for this. So I don’t really have a choice but to agree, do I?"
Sharon pleaded, "Sis, could you really turn me down? Your poor little sister! If you don’t help me, no one else will."
"Fine," Anne Sutton relented. "When do you want to meet?"
Sharon said, "We’re flexible. It really depends on when you have time, Sis."
Hearing Sharon’s reply, Anne thought for a moment. "How about tonight, then?"
"But don’t you have a late shift tonight?"
"We’ll make it a bit later," Anne said. "I’ll go after I get off work."
Sharon said, "That works. He has to work late, too."
"Where is he working now?"
Sharon said, "He works at Fawcett Group."
Fawcett Group was one of the top corporations in Westhaven. It wasn’t easy to get a job there.
Anne Sutton said, "Let’s do that, then. You head back first, and I’ll call you when I’m finished here."
Sharon said, "Thanks, Sis. I’ll go see Mom at the hospital first. I’ll talk to you later."
With that, she left.
Anne Sutton didn’t get off work until nine. Remembering her plans with Sharon, she headed straight for the restaurant.
Sharon had already booked a table.
She and David Hayes had been secretly dating for a few years, but they had never gone public. This was the first time she was officially introducing him to family.
’Even though they’d already met, of course.’
As Anne drove, she gave the housekeeper a call. "Has my husband come home?"
The housekeeper replied, "Yes, he’s back."
Anne said, "Okay, can you let him know I’ll be back late? I’m having dinner with my sister."
The housekeeper said, "Okay."
When she arrived at the restaurant, Sharon and David Hayes were already there.
He was dressed much more maturely than when she had seen him at the hospital a few years ago.
He’d been just a student back then, after all, but now he was a professional.
Sharon was sitting beside him, and the two of them were talking intimately.
As Anne walked over, Sharon spotted her. "Sis."
David Hayes quickly followed suit. "Sis."
He was very reserved in front of Anne, likely because she had caught him in such an embarrassing situation before.
Anne’s impression of him wasn’t great, so she wasn’t particularly warm in return.
She sat down, and Sharon quickly poured her a glass of water.
The girl hardly ever did chores at home—she’d even ask the housekeeper to pour her a glass of water—but now she was being incredibly solicitous.
Anne looked at David Hayes and said, "You’ve got some nerve."
Sharon shot Anne a look. "Sis."
She had invited Anne over as a formality, not for her to criticize her boyfriend.
So, the moment Anne said something about David, she immediately became defensive.
Anne glanced at Sharon and, deciding to save her the embarrassment, didn’t say anything harsher.
She hadn’t meddled when they were first dating, and now, with Sharon pregnant, it was her sister’s choice. There was nothing she could do.
All Anne could do was indulge her.
Sharon sat beside her and asked, "Sis, what do you want to eat? Order whatever you like."
Anne said, "You can just go ahead and order."
Sharon said, "Then I’ll take care of it."
After they ordered, Anne sat watching David Hayes. Perhaps because there were things he didn’t dare say to her face, he was on his phone, sending a message.
Sharon glanced at her phone, then looked up at Anne. "Sis, David and I are planning to get our marriage license first, and then we’ll plan the wedding. What do you think?"
Anne replied, "It’s your decision to make."
Despite the noncommittal reply, Sharon was worried her sister was just saying that out of anger. "I’m pregnant, and I’ll start showing soon, so we need to prepare for the wedding quickly. But... for getting the license, I was hoping you could do me a favor."
"What kind of favor?" Anne asked.
"Could you go to Mom and Dad’s and get my family register for me? Just say you need it for something. We’ll use it to get our license, and then I’ll give it right back."
Anne sighed. ’So after all that, it turns out she just wanted my help getting her family register.’
"This is something you should really discuss with our parents," Anne said. "This is about the rest of your life. No matter what, I still think you should get Mom and Dad’s approval."
Even if you don’t get their approval, they at least deserve to know.
Otherwise...
’If her life turns out badly, she’ll just turn around and ask me why I didn’t stop her!’
It was a gamble Anne didn’t dare to take.
Hearing this, Sharon said, "But Sis, if Dad finds out, he’ll kill me! And Mom isn’t well right now. What if the shock makes her even sicker?"
"You can’t hide it from them forever!" Anne said. "What if I help you get the family register, you get your license, and then your life ends up being miserable?"
"Sis," David Hayes chimed in from the side. "I will be good to Sharon."
Anne glanced at the man, not believing a word he said.
’Anyone can say that.’
Sharon pleaded, "Sis, please just help me! You’ve always been the one who’s best to me! Please, won’t you help me?"
Anne looked at her sister, considered for a moment, and said, "Tell you what. If you’re afraid to tell Mom and Dad, I’ll talk to them for you. They have to find out eventually. And now that you’re pregnant, no matter how much they dislike him, they can’t just ignore your wishes."
