Chapter 134: Chapter 134: Leaving the Child with Her
Anne Sutton rubbed her eyes, looked at the man before her, and asked, "You’re going to give me a ride?"
"Or what?" Nathan Fawcett said. "Are you planning to walk to work?"
"..." Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "Don’t come looking for me at the hospital anymore."
"Why?" Nathan Fawcett asked, puzzled. "Does my showing up embarrass you?"
"It’s too high-profile!" Anne Sutton complained. "Every time you show up, it’s like an imperial tour, with so many people."
When she saw him at the hospital yesterday, she was so startled she immediately ran away.
After hearing what she said, Nathan Fawcett asked, "You don’t like it?"
"Can’t you be a little more low-key?"
"No."
"..."
Nathan Fawcett said, "I have to go back to Veridia for two days."
When Anne Sutton heard this, she looked at him. "Is it for something important?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m going back for a meeting."
Anne Sutton said, "Oh, right. You’re the Head of the Linden Family."
Compared to that, the Fawcett Group was practically nothing to him.
Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and got up.
Anne Sutton watched his retreating back and asked, "You’re not just going to leave and never come back, are you?"
’She didn’t know why she was so worried.’
Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett paused for a moment, then went straight to wash up.
Anne Sutton sat on the bed, thinking of Anna Linden...
’I wonder if she knows that Ethan Linden came here?’
Nathan Fawcett said, "Ian will stay here. Help take care of him."
"..." Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief. "You’re just leaving your son with me like that?"
’She hadn’t expected him to be so trusting.’
’She was very fond of Ian, but they weren’t related by blood.’
’Is he being a little too trusting?’
Nathan Fawcett said, "Look after him for me. He likes you!"
He was only going back for meetings for two days. He would just be leaving Ian at home anyway, so he might as well leave him with Anne Sutton.
Nathan glanced at her. Anne was Ian’s mother, after all. Ian would surely be very happy to stay with her.
’Besides, he’d already asked Ian about it last night!’
Anne Sutton said, "This is suddenly a lot of pressure."
"Just let him stay here. Someone will come over to tutor him while you’re at work. You just need to spend time with him in the evenings."
Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Anne Sutton was pleasantly surprised. "Okay."
...
After Anne Sutton finished getting ready, she went downstairs. Nathan Fawcett was already eating.
He hadn’t waited for her, simply sitting off to one side and listening as Butler Walters reported on company matters.
...
Anne Sutton sat nearby and quickly finished her breakfast. Nathan gave her a ride on his way to the Fawcett Group.
...
Charles Prescott was also eating.
In the morning, Mrs. Prescott woke up early and said to Charles Prescott, "I think Vera is quite good. Why don’t you just get together with Vera? Look, when she’s not here, there’s no one to take care of Leo."
Charles Prescott said, "I could never be with her!"
"Charles!" Mrs. Prescott said. "She bore you a son, after all. For Leo’s sake, having both parents is better for a child."
"I didn’t have a mother, and I turned out just fine, didn’t I?" Charles Prescott said. "Just drop it."
’It was only because he was in a good mood today that he was even sitting here, listening to his mother ramble.’
’On any other day, he would never have sat here and listened to his mother talk about Sylvia Warren.’
Mrs. Prescott said, "What’s so bad about Vera, anyway? I don’t think that Mia Shaw is anything special! She’s not even as pretty as our Vera."
"..." Charles Prescott glanced at her and said, "I’m going to work."
With that, he stood up.
As soon as he walked out, he saw Ethan Linden leaving, with Anne Sutton in his car.
Charles Prescott frowned at the sight. ’By all rights, he was the one who’d come out on top. After all, even Chairman Grant was furious with Ethan Linden and had decided to wash his hands of him. Ethan no longer had any standing to compete with him for control of the Fawcett Group.’
’And yet, seeing Anne Sutton by Ethan Linden’s side made him so unhappy.’
...
When Nathan Fawcett’s car stopped at the entrance, Anne Sutton glanced at him and said, "Thanks."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her but didn’t say a word.
’When Anne saw him staring at her, she felt as if he had her heart in his grasp.’
She quickly got out of the car and closed the door.
...
When Anne Sutton got home in the afternoon, Nathan Fawcett had already left.
He had a meeting tomorrow, so he went back early today to prepare.
Ian hadn’t left.
’He really had left Ian behind.’
Anne Sutton saw Ian wearing a small jacket, playing in the yard with his little toy sports car.
The car was custom-made for him.
Nathan Fawcett had someone deliver it today.
Leo also really wanted to play and was trying to butter him up from the side. "I want a ride too."
Ian was still resentful about him picking his flowers last time and was clearly not pleased.
But Leo had obviously forgotten about it and was now acting like Ian’s little lackey, even pushing the car for him.
Anne Sutton stood to the side and said, "Ian."
When Ian saw Anne Sutton, he said, "Mama."
Just then, Mrs. Prescott came out. Seeing her own grandson acting as Ian’s lackey, she was utterly shocked. "Leo."
She walked over and took Leo’s hand. "Why are you pushing the car for him! If you want one, Grandma will buy you one later."
"No, I want his!"
Ian’s car had cost hundreds of thousands and was custom-made. It looked incredibly cool!
For that much money, you could buy a real car.
Leo was instantly captivated by the toy car’s sleek, cool design and adored it.
The old woman said, "You little pushover! He pushed you last time! Don’t you hold a grudge?"
Anne Sutton stood by, watching Mrs. Prescott’s passive-aggressive display.
She said to Ian, "Ian, let’s go home."
...
Ian got out of the car. Anne Sutton took his hand and led him home, also having a maid put his car away.
Nathan Fawcett was gone, but he had called over the people who took care of Ian in Veridia.
So now, besides Anne and the nanny, there were others to help look after Ian. She wouldn’t have to worry about him even when she wasn’t around.
At dinner, it was just Anne Sutton and Ian. Anne looked at Ian and asked, "Ian, do you miss your dad?"
"Why would I miss him?" Ian said maturely. "He said he has work and will be back in a couple of days. He’s often busy. I’m used to it."
Anne Sutton said, "So you don’t mind staying with me, then?"
"Not at all!" Ian looked at Anne Sutton and said, "I like you a lot."
’Though he didn’t know why.’
’He just felt a natural warmth toward her whenever he saw her.’
Just then, Mrs. Prescott came over.
She had Leo in tow, and he was crying his eyes out.
Seeing her walk in, Anne Sutton said, "What are you two doing here?"
As soon as Leo came in, he spotted Ian’s car off to the side and instantly stopped crying.
The old woman said, "Let our Leo play with your car."
