Chapter 124: Chapter 124: She Won’t Marry Anyone Else, She Will Only Marry Me
Charles Prescott said, "I came by to deliver some company documents to you."
Nathan Fawcett walked over and sat down at the dining table. Charles Prescott followed suit, bringing over a laptop to show Nathan the files on it.
He also took the opportunity to brief Nathan on some company matters.
When he finished, he said to Nathan, "With you taking over the company, Second Uncle, it’s bound to prosper more than ever."
Nathan watched the man flattering him, realizing that Charles was taking a step back in order to advance.
The man was clever, always knowing when to bend and when to stand firm.
Back when the old Chairman was still alive, the Prescotts—father and son—had been incredibly deferential.
But after the old Chairman passed away, they began treating everything that belonged to the Fawcett Family as their own.
Nathan said, "I thought you’d resent me for joining the company and taking away what you considered yours."
Charles replied, "Second Uncle, how can you say that? Everything the Fawcett Family has was left by the old Chairman. You are his biological son, so of course, it all belongs to you. The old Chairman was a great benefactor to my father and me. Serving the Fawcett Family is what we ought to do."
Nathan glanced at Charles. No wonder so many women liked him; that mouth of his was certainly persuasive.
He was probably cursing Nathan to death in his heart, yet here he was, spouting such insincere words.
Anne Sutton came downstairs with Ian. Seeing Charles Prescott in the dining room, she paused and remarked, "Why am I seeing someone so nauseating first thing in the morning?"
She simply couldn’t bring herself to be pleasant to Charles Prescott.
Charles, however, didn’t seem to mind her words. "Good morning, Auntie," he said politely.
"..." Anne was all too familiar with this hypocritical act of his.
She just didn’t know what he was plotting.
She and Ian sat down.
Her rear had barely touched the chair when she heard Charles say, "I hear you’re engaged to Justin Shields, Auntie."
Hearing this, Anne shot a guilty glance at Nathan. After all, he had been jealous about this very thing for half the night.
She turned to Charles and said, "Since you’re calling me ’Auntie,’ you should understand that you should stay out of your elders’ affairs."
Charles replied, "You’re remarrying, Auntie. Naturally, I have to show some concern. I’m sure Second Uncle is also very happy that you’re able to marry again. Although my uncle is no longer with us, Second Uncle and I are still here. When you remarry, we won’t let you be wronged. You’ll get everything you’re due."
"..." Sitting there listening to Charles, Anne saw Nathan’s expression growing darker and darker.
Anne said, "Charles Prescott, are you that happy I’m getting married?"
’Of course he is,’ she thought. ’He’s probably dying for me to leave!’
’He doesn’t want me here.’
However...
’What a pity. Charles Prescott’s plans are about to fall through again!’
Charles said, "I’m just worried about you, Auntie. I was afraid you’d stay depressed and take it out on me all day. Thanks to you, my grandmother and Leo are still here and haven’t left yet!"
Anne retorted, "Your grandmother dotes on you so much. Shouldn’t you be happy to care for her in her old age? And it’s not my place as your auntie to lecture you, but respecting the elderly isn’t something you can just throw money at. You also need to spend time with her. Companionship is the best form of filial piety. You can’t just ignore her because she’s not wealthy and didn’t leave you a rich inheritance, can you?"
"..." The corner of Charles Prescott’s mouth twitched. ’Anne Sutton’s tongue is getting more and more vicious!’
’Isn’t she just implying that my family was filial to the old Chairman but neglected my own grandmother back in the countryside?’
He gritted his teeth and said, "Thank you for the lesson, Auntie. I’ll remember it. When you’re no longer part of the Fawcett Family, I will be sure to keep your words in mind and take good care of my grandmother."
"Mama." Ian, who was sitting beside her, spoke up. "I want to eat dumplings," he said to Anne.
Sitting nearby, Charles was taken aback when he heard Ian call Anne "Mama." He looked over at the boy.
Ian’s features resembled Nathan Fawcett’s. If one didn’t know he was Ethan Linden’s son, he could easily pass for Nathan’s child.
Perhaps because Anne’s own child had been lost, seeing a boy of a similar age now calling her "Mama" gave Charles a very strange feeling.
Anne picked up a dumpling with her chopsticks and placed it in Ian’s bowl.
Charles asked, "Isn’t this Second Uncle’s child?"
Anne nodded. "Mm-hm. And he’ll be my child from now on, too!"
Charles glanced at Nathan and asked, "You two... you aren’t together, are you?"
’Ethan Linden did say before that he wanted to marry Anne Sutton!’
When Anne heard his question, she denied it. "Do we have to be together for Ian to be my child?"
’Although what Nathan Fawcett wanted was for her to be with him.’
’But that was something for them to know privately.’
’If Charles Prescott found out she was involved with Ethan Linden, there was no telling what he would do.’
’After all...’
’The most important thing for Ethan Linden right now was to inherit the Fawcett Family’s assets.’
’Charles Prescott wouldn’t mind, of course.’
’But the board members... if they knew that she, his sister-in-law, had an ambiguous relationship with Ethan, they would definitely withdraw their support for him.’
’Especially someone as traditional as Chairman Grant.’
’If he turned against them too, Ethan would have no supporters left in the group.’
Anne had just finished speaking when Nathan declared, "Anne and I are together! She won’t marry anyone else. She’ll only marry me."
Anne: "..."
’Holy shit!’
’So she’d been worrying here all this time for nothing!’
Charles looked at Nathan in disbelief. "Second Uncle," he asked, "do you have any idea what you’re saying?"
When they’d met in Veridia before, Charles had dismissed the things he said as the ravings of a madman.
He never thought Nathan would still be saying such things now that he was in the Fawcett home!
Nathan said, "What, you think it’s not allowed?"
"Aren’t you with Ms. Shields? I heard you even have a child together!"
"You don’t need to concern yourself with my private affairs," Nathan said. "Also, from now on, be more respectful to Anne."
"..." Charles had originally thought Anne was leaving the Fawcett Family to be with Justin Shields, so he’d come for the gossip.
But in the end...
He got his gossip, but it nearly choked him!
’Ethan Linden was actually getting together with Anne Sutton!’
’This was absolutely shocking news!’
’He’d been having a splitting headache lately.’
’But now, it was as if he saw a glimmer of hope.’
’With Ethan Linden acting like this, did he really think he could still compete with him for the Fawcett Family?’
Anne looked at Nathan, thinking he had to be insane.
’Why did he have to do that?’
’He could have taken back the Fawcett Family smoothly, but instead, he was here handing Charles Prescott leverage against him.’
Charles was about done eating. He took a phone call and left.
He said he was going to the office to wait for Nathan.
Once he was gone, Anne looked at Nathan and asked, "Why did you say that to Charles Prescott?"
Nathan looked back at her. "Why can’t I say that? What, do you still have hopes for him? You still want to be with him?"
Hearing him question her again, Anne felt a headache coming on.
