Chapter 26: Chapter 26
Elara POV
“Those sons of bitches,” I rant, running to my room, and throwing myself down onto the nearest couch.
Ever since I set foot in this place, I have been told to be here and do that. Do not say this and do not go there. Mate the alphas, be blindsided and humiliated by them, stay in your room, raise their offspring, and, oh yes, have their babies.
And what the fuck was that all about Alphas taking two mates? Now every she-wolf can feel like a sloppy second. It sucks being a she-wolf.
The more I learn about the High Council, the less I like them. I did not miss that the High Elder had almost let something slip that this had happened before. If I did not believe Braden before, I believe him now. The High Council is hiding things and is out of control. freeweɓnøvel.com
With everything happening, I cannot help but wonder if the Great Wars have a connection with the mate-matching thing.
I wonder if ... the door bursts open and I jump up in fright.
“Bitch, can’t you knock?” I gape at Mindy, clasping my rapidly beating heart. “I thought you were another one of those scary elders.” ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
“Sorry,” she winces. “Wow, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Thanks,” I roll my eyes. “It’s been a shitty day.”
“I heard a High Elder came to see you,” she shuts the door and comes to sit beside me. “What the hell did he want?”
“You’re not going to fucking believe this,” I drop my head back against the couch and close my eyes. “The High Elder said I had to produce pups. Even though Alice is Kane and Axel’s true mate.”
“That’s fucked up,” she snorts, shaking her head.
“Right!” I sit up straight. “How humiliating is that? I feel like a fucking sex doll or something.”
“At least the sex is good,” she grins mischievously.
“Mindy,” I groan, frustrated. “That’s not the point! Obviously, they didn’t agree. Also, the council is hiding shit from us. Everything we know about the Great Wars is a lie.”
“Wait, wait, wait,” she holds up her hand. “Since when were we talking about a Great Wars conspiracy?”
“The shifters aren’t the only ones who fought in the wars,” I explain enthusiastically. “There are other creatures out there, and Braden said ...”
“Uhm, who the hell is Braden?” Mindy interrupts me.
Fuck.
“Just a guy I met when I went running the other day,” I reply casually, but I can feel a warm blush creeping up my neck.
“You skank,” Mindy giggles, hitting me on the arm.
“Ow!” I frown, rubbing my arm.
“Don’t ‘ow’ me!” She smirks. “You slept with him, didn’t you?”
“Hell, no!” I yell, offended.
“Is he an Alpha?” She asks curiously. “What pack does he belong to?”
“I honestly don’t know,” I sigh. I know she is only looking out for me, but I really wish she would shut the fuck up. “I didn’t ask.”
“And you expect me to believe that?” She eyes me suspiciously.
“We literally just met,” I groan. “Just ... forget that I mentioned him, and don’t tell anyone. I’m already in enough trouble for just breathing.”
“Don’t worry, I understand,” she says, looking at me sympathetically. “I also have two mates with titles who sometimes have a stick up their asses.”
“Thank you,” I smile, taking her hands.
“Anyway,” she continues. “I don’t understand your fascination with the Great Wars, but if you want to know more about it, you should look through Kane and Axel’s library. The place is fucking huge.”
“Mindy, you’re a genius.” I grab her shoulders, kiss her on the cheek, and jump up.
“Wait!” she shouts as I walk to the door. “You’ll have to sneak in, because ...”
I stop listening and close the door behind me. Determined, I walked to the alphas’ office. If there is information on the Great Wars, I will get my hands on it.
I was about to enter when I heard Alice yelling. I quickly step back and press my back against the wall, concentrating on my breathing.
“You claimed me, but there’s no mate bond between us,” Alice shrieks. “So, I don’t have to do any of your stupid Luna duties.”
Wait, what? I frown. How was that even possible?
A small glow of satisfaction blooms in my chest. So, the boys did not get their way, after all. Lost in thought, I totally miss Alice rushing into the hallway until she practically bodychecks me.
“What the hell are you doing here?” she growls.
“It’s my house too.” I pull myself together and plant my hands on my hips. “In case you have forgotten.”
“I bet you love this, don’t you, Elara?” Her eyes flash dangerously, and she flexes her hand, ensuring that I see her claws. “Now that you get to keep fucking them, you can slowly worm your way into my place.”
“Oh, please,” I roll my eyes. As much as I enjoy their plan blowing up in their faces, they still rejected me, and I have too much pride to forgive them so easily. “I’m not deaf, Alice. You said it yourself, you’re not their true Luna, so what is there for me to even steal from you?”
She glares at me with so much hatred that a shiver runs down my spine, but that does not stop me from getting a rise out of her. She has been making my life a living hell, and a little payback would not hurt.
“I didn’t even ask to be mated to Kane and Axel in the first place.” I wave my hand towards the office. “So, you can keep them.”
“Oh, I intend to,” she snarls, narrowing her eyes. “And you’re not going to stop me.”
“Okay,” I shrug, crossing my arms. “Is that everything?”
“Urgh,” she stomps her foot before storming off.
I laugh softly and satisfied as I watch her leave, but my smile quickly falters when realisation strikes me.
If they claimed Alice, but it did not work ... where does that leave me? Are they going to mark me now?
Consumed with my thoughts, I do not notice Kane and Axel walking out of the office into the hallway.
“What the fuck did you say to her?” Kane demands, glaring at me.
“Why’d you have to go and piss her off even more?” Axel hisses.
His whole body was humming, like he was barely containing his wolf after the blow-up with Alice.
“Listen,” I say calmly. “It’s not my fault you thought with your cocks instead of with your brains.”
Kane charges forward, a low growl rumbling in his chest, but Axel places a hand on Kane’s shoulder to calm him.
“You could’ve dodged this Alice bullet,” I continue, “but instead, you ran head-first into it.”
Kane clenches his fists, fighting to control his anger, and the muscle in Axel’s jaw is working overtime. They are furious, and I get the feeling they are unsure what to do with me.
“I’m curious,” I bravely continue. I came this far; I might as well finish it. “What are you going to do about this precarious situation you’ve found yourselves in?”
Kane’s eyes darken, his wolf pushing its way to the surface. It is like I can sense his anger growing as he stands in front of me.
And I knew Lily could, too.
“What the fuck do you mean, Elara?” Kane says through gritted teeth. “You’re as much a part of this as we are.”
“I don’t know,” I shrug. “From where I’m standing, it seems like you’re the ones getting fucked.”
