Chapter 133: Chapter 133
Elara POV
“Have you lost your mind?” I snap. “Where do you think they would look for us first when we leave? Stillwood. How can you stand there raving about the best for me and the kids’ safety, and in the same breath, drag us out of the only place where we actually are safe?”
“Don’t look at me like I’m crazy,” Mason growls. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
“Safe here? Says who?” He points a finger towards the cabin. “The wolves in there who stole my pups from me? Or the ancient vampire and his hot young minion who keep promising to ‘keep us updated’ but never tell us a fucking thing? Why the hell are we trusting any of these people? What good have they ever done for us?”
“If it weren’t for the ancient vampire and his minion, we wouldn’t have known what Orion and the council were up to,” I argue. Kane and Axel’s lie about the twins has pushed Mason over the edge, and now he is not thinking straight. “If it weren’t for Braden, Stella and I would’ve been kidnapped, killed or worse. Braden’s cabin is the only place where Stella and I are safe.”
“That’s what they want you to think,” he yells. “They want us to believe we need them, so they can keep up here long enough to carry out whatever plans they have for us. Maybe they are all working for Orion, maybe this is some elaborate plan to take me out of the picture for good.”
“Goddess, Mason,” I gape at him. I thought he was out of his mind with rage, but now I am thinking that he is having a mental breakdown. “You’re really losing it.”
“I’m not,” he shakes his head. “For the first time, I’m thinking clearly.”
“No,” I whisper. “You’re losing it. All those conspiracy theories and doubts. Mason, that’s not helpful.”
“Urgh, Goddess,” Mason grunts, bending down and holding his head in his hands.
“Oh, Mason,” I sigh, standing behind him and rubbing his back. “We’ll get through this.”
“I made a mistake bringing you here,” Mason sighs, pushing his fingers through his long hair, and when he looks at me, I am surprised to see tears in his eyes. “I thought I could make Orion pay for what he’d done to me. If we stayed in Stillwood, they wouldn’t have known about you, and we could’ve been obliviously happy.”
“Sit down,” I order, taking his hand and dragging him to the ground with me. I throw my arms around him, cradling his head against my chest.
“We could’ve been happy in Stillwood,” I say softly. “For a while, at least. But they would’ve found us eventually. The truth has a way of coming out. Always.”
“I should’ve listened to you,” he mumbles. “I should’ve let go of Orion’s betrayal. He is already self-destructing without my help. Maybe if I never came here, things would’ve imploded anyway, and I could’ve slipped in quietly after the dust had settled.”
“I never gave you that advice,” I laugh softly. “When I told you to let go, I meant forever. Not just until Orion self-destructs.”
“So, I’m the crazy one here,” he sighs, sitting up and pulling away from me. “Braden and some old-ass vampire know what’s right for you and Stella, and I don’t. It’s no wonder you didn’t pick me.”
“Hey,” I bump my shoulder playfully against his. “That old ass is my grandfather. He wouldn’t do anything to harm me.”
“Elara, I want to run away with you because I love you,” he says thoughtfully. “I don’t want anything else to happen to you or our children.”
“That’s the thing, Mason,” I say emotionally. “It’s not our children. It’s mine and yours. There is no us. I know you don’t want to hear this, but Kane and Axel are my mates, and I love them. I want to be with them.”
“You might love them, but I love you more,” he insists, turning to make, and holding me by my shoulders. “I love you so much.”
“Mason, I ...”
His lips come crashing down on mine, smothering my protest. His kiss is urgent, hungry and needy, but I remain still. In this state, he might take any movement as encouragement. I do not want to hurt him any more than he already is, but I do not feel the way he does.
“You’re not kissing me,” he mutters, slowly pulling away. “You kissed me last night. Why aren’t you now?”
“I don’t love you the way you want me to,” I whisper hoarsely.
“But you did once,” his eyes pierce into mine. “Why not again? We can be happy.” ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
“Please, let it go,” I grunt, exhausted by the conversation. “I’m not leaving them. Living with you in Stillwood is not what I want.”
“Okay,” he jumps up. “I get it. I won’t ask you again.”
“And, Mason,” I say firmly, standing up. “I don’t want you to go, either. If you love me like you claim you do, you’ll stay for me and Stella and not endanger us by crossing the barrier.”
He looks at me long and intensely before he nods.
“Thank you,” I smile, leading Mason back to the cabin.
Mason avoids looking at Kane or Axel when we enter the living room, and he walks straight to the room, shutting the door behind him.
“Is he okay?” Axel asks, concerned.
“Fuck, no, he’s not,” I snap, glaring at him. “What were you thinking, hiding the twins from him?”
“We were thinking about how much we love them, and don’t want to give them up,” Kane replies.
“And that they’ll have a better life in Constantine than in Stillwood,” Axel adds.
Exhausted, I slump into the couch, lean back and close my eyes. I cannot even be mad at them. I hid their daughter from them; I am no better.
“I don’t know how to fix this,” I admit out loud. “It doesn’t matter how we spin it; somebody is going to get hurt. The twins legally belong to him. It doesn’t matter how much you love them.”
