Chapter 114: Chapter 114

Axel POV

“That’s just fucking bullshit,” I explode. Dad is a cheating and conniving asshole, but a serial killer of hybrids? No way.

“Let’s take a moment and say you’re not lying,” Kane’s voice is low and trembling with anger. “How do you know that? Murdering people isn’t something you put on a billboard or admit to scumbags like you.”

“Because both of our mates were hybrids,” Gregory says, sitting back in his chair.

“I thought they were a dying breed,” Kane replies.

“They are,” Lucas confirms. “Our mates were some of the few left in this region.”

“This absolutely makes no fucking sense,” I look at Kane. “Dad hunting and killing a dying breed?”

“Not to mention that the mentioned breeds are apparently all over the place,” Kane adds. freewēbnoveℓ.com

“Urgh, just say it,” Lucas grunts, looking at us. “And stop with the silent conversation.”

“How did you just so happen to get mated to two of the last remaining hybrids in this region?” I ask suspiciously.

“It wasn’t by chance,” Gregory says wickedly. “Remember when I said Orion has the Council in his pocket?”

I look at Kane. Is he saying what I think he is saying?

“He had the Elders rig the mating ceremony?” Kane asks.

“Bingo,” Lucas points at Kane.

“Something’s off here,” Kane says, sharing my thoughts. “If they’re in cahoots with Dad, why turn on him now? What do they possibly have to gain by spilling their guts?”

“I know,” I agree. “But let’s continue playing dumb and gather information.”

“I didn’t tell you the best part,” Gregory grins. “We were promised power if we played the role Orion wanted.”

“And what role is that exactly?” Kane asks, his eyes boring into Gregory’s like lasers.

“The bad guys,” Gregory growls. “He tapped us for his little scheme because we looked like the type of wolves who’d murder their mates. And I guess it worked. You two bought it, anyway.”

I study Gregory closely. Does he honestly think we are buying his bullshit? Gregory does not seem smart enough, and yet, this whole scheme is almost too outrageous to believe. Dad is paying off the two roughest wolves in Constantine to mate with hybrids so he can kidnap them and do ... what exactly?

“We don’t know what he’s trying to do with the hybrids,” Lucas says as if he can read my mind. “Until things started to go south, we decided it was better not to ask.”

“Surely you have theories, though?” Kane sneers, pouring them another healthy glass of whiskey. Which they down – again - with another huge single gulp.

“Maybe he’s using them to make hybrid babies,” Gregory shrugs. “Or maybe he just really hates bloodsuckers, I don’t know.”

I take the bottle from Kane, pour my own glass, and toss it back.

“If he’s paying you off, then why come to us and tell us everything? Aren’t you worried he’ll retaliate?” I raise my eyebrows and cross my arms.

“Nah,” Lucas slurs. “He already broke his promise. We don’t owe him shit.”

“You see,” Gregory says, gesturing drunkenly. “Orion promised us protection from you if we went through with his plan. Which is why we were so pissed when you declared that we couldn’t mate anymore. We asked for Orion’s help getting out of it, but he ignored us like we were fucking street garbage.”

“There’s one more thing,” Gregory says. “Orion has ...”

But Gregory is cut off by the crashing sound of the front door, and multiple sets of footsteps running inside.

“What the fuck?” I frown, icy tendrils curling around my heart. Did the Council find out Elara is hiding here?

Suddenly, a group of men in black robes pour into the great room. Four of them are holding back Maxim and Monroe, whose faces are twisted with anger. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

“What the fuck is going on here?” Kane demands.

A flash of white sweeps through the crowd of black robes. Gustav.

“By order of the Council,” he announces, his voice echoing around the room. “Alphas Kane and Axel are under arrest.”

Kane POV

Dumbstruck, I stare at the senile old man. Did he finally lose all his marbles?

“Arrested for what?” I throw my hands in the air. “Entertaining these two assholes?”

“Well,” Axel snorts. “Possibly, they are scumbags who are confessing to atrocities.”

“Hey!” Gregory protests, but I refill his glass, and he shuts up and finishes the drink.

“I told you that you were on thin ice,” Gustav says, his icy blue eyes flashing with irritation.

“Then make us stand before the Council first!” Axel snaps. “You can’t just arrest the Alphas without allowing them to plead their case.”

Gustav crept toward us, clapping his bony hands in front of him.

“When it comes to murder,” Gustav steps forward, clapping his bony hands in front of him. “That isn’t an option.”

Murder? Frowning, I look at Axel, but he seems just as confused as I. What the fuck is this senile asshole talking about?

“We didn’t kill anyone,” I scoff. “You’re confused.”

“I’m not arguing anymore,” Gustav says, waving his hand dismissively. “You’re being arrested for the murders of multiple she-wolves, including Elara Montgomery.”

My mind ceases. Elara is very much alive, but we cannot admit it, because then she is no longer safe. And we never touched another she-wolf, much less murdered them. That is ... Father! The realisation crashes around me. I turn to Axel; we lock eyes and both spin around to face Gregory and Lucas. They wiggle their fingers in a little wave.

“Sorry, boys,” Gregory smirks. “Nothing personal.”

Those fucking bastards.

“You set us up!” I snarl, lunging at them.

But before I could make contact, multiple sets of hands were on me, pulling my arms back and tying them with heavy silver chains that singed my skin, making me wince and growl in pain.

Axel growls, too, and I look over to see him thrashing and howling against the men chaining him up.

I glare at Gregory and Lucas with hatred. These two fuckers and Dad has worked together nicely. I recently learned Dad is a despicable bastard, but never in my wildest dreams imagined he would frame his own flesh and blood.

“Get the twins,” Gustav orders.

“Don’t you touch them!” I shout beside myself, fighting my restraints.

“Oh, they’ll be safe with us,” Gustav says icily.

“Elara!” Axel says. “We should try mind-linking with her. She can ...”

“Ahhhh,” I scream as an electric shock zaps from my back, all the way up to my head.

I drop to the floor, Axel landing beside me.

“What the fuck was that?” I mind-link, but he does not reply.

“Axel, are you okay?” I ask urgently, but he only looks at me.

“No more silent debating,” Gustav snaps, and I look at him.

Have they just zapped our fucking brains so we cannot speak via our mind link? I did not even know they had the science to do that. What else could they do that we are not aware of?

Another black-cloaked wolf approaches me and throws something over my head. And then the world goes dark.
