Chapter 753: Jerk
"Enough. You won the fight, so what reason do you have to be so arrogant?"
The crowd continuously retreated. Shane, drenched from head to toe, hid behind the crowd and yelled, "This is a society ruled by law! You can’t act so recklessly here."
Jason, who had just climbed out of the water, was the first to lead the chant: "That’s right, this is a society ruled by law now!!"
"Exactly, who the hell do you think you are, acting all tough here?!"
"An outsider like you wants to come here and meddle in our affairs? You’re fucking asking for it."
"So what if you can fight? You’re just a thug..."
Luis sat down right at the highest point of the arched bridge, lit a cigarette, and asked with a chuckle, "Oh, so now it’s a society ruled by law, is it?"
"Earlier, when you came here to harass them, that wasn’t a society ruled by law?"
"Earlier, when you came at me with wood chopping knives, that wasn’t a society ruled by law?!"
"Now that all of you have turned into turtles hiding in your shells, suddenly it’s a society ruled by law..."
While they were still facing off against each other, two police cars drove in along the village road.
Luis lit a cigarette, then walked over to the courtyard gate. Looking at Grandma Jiang and Deewa, who were crying like rained-on flowers with faces full of worry, he said, "Don’t cry. Everything’s fine now."
The elderly woman said worriedly, "Jason is the local tyrant here. They is a big name in town, and he knows a lot of people. It would be very easy for you to get the short end of the stick this time."
"Did you call anyone for help?"
Deewa, on the other hand, wasn’t worried.
She knew that Luis had an astonishingly powerful background and connections, after all, from her perspective.
He had raped her right in front of David, and afterward, absolutely nothing had happened to him.
Even Dominic, who usually had both the underworld and the official world eating out of his hand, had accepted this loss without a word, while David had suffered one misfortune after another.
A remarkably beautiful misunderstanding...
"Oh right, I’ll call someone right now."
Luis directly made a phone call. "Brother... I just got into a fight with some people. The police are here."
Hail became instantly nervous upon hearing this. "Where are you? Are you hurt??"
Luis gave the address and said he wasn’t hurt. Hail let out a huge sigh of relief and said, "I’ll be right there. I’ll give someone in that district a heads up first. Don’t worry."
"Okay, see you in a bit."
In rural areas, this kind of thing used to happen a lot. Fights between villages, between surnames, and between clan ancestral halls had always been brutally fierce.
In places where such clan beliefs were concentrated, the scale often grew too large for the local authorities to control.
But now that society has become more civilized, physical altercations are extremely rare. This kind of internal village problem generally doesn’t blow up.
It was only because Luis was an outsider, an unfamiliar face, that Jason could rally so many people. The other villagers were clearly just idle and looking for some excitement.
Of course, in a place like this, chaotic, petty incidents happen every few days, so everyone was used to it.
The police got out of their cars and, with practiced ease, first told the crowd to disperse and stop gawking, to avoid any more trouble.
After briefly asking about the cause of the incident, one police car took Shane and his father Jason.
Another police car took Luis. A young officer was driving, while an older, steadier officer sat in the back with Luis.
"Yes, yes, it was our precinct that responded to the call!!"
"He’s in my car..."
The older officer answered a phone call, his expression changing as he discreetly observed Luis. After hanging up, he said politely, "Do you smoke? If you do, I’ll crack the window."
The young officer was startled by this attitude but didn’t dare ask any questions.
"I left my cigarettes in the car and forgot to bring them."
Luis shook his head. freewebnovёl.ƈom
"Have one of mine. They’re cheap, but they’ll do in a pinch."
The older officer immediately handed over his cigarettes, along with a lighter, stopping just short of lighting it for Luis personally because that would have looked too obsequious.
"Thanks."
Luis took them without ceremony and took a puff, knowing full well that the reliably capable Hail had already taken care of everything.
The young officer, sharp enough to read the room, immediately cracked the window open a bit.
Back at the town police station, both sides were taken to different rooms for questioning. Statements were taken, and each side gave their version of events.
It was the classic case of each side insisting they were right and the other was wrong.
"Are you okay? Did they give you a hard time?"
Deewa had arrived shortly after on an electric scooter, breathless and carrying a USB flash drive.
Ever since the complete falling out with Julian, Jason had been looking for excuses to cause trouble every so often. As the village chief and a local bully, he never missed a chance to make their lives difficult as long as he had an excuse.
Deewa had installed many surveillance cameras at home, and this evidence could prove that Shane and his group were the ones who came to block the door and start trouble in the first place.
"Whoa, brother... that’s impressive. Badass!"
The head of the station and a few other officers had come over to watch the excitement...
The footage of Luis holding a stick, guarding the arched bridge, and knocking over a dozen people into the water was as thrilling as a martial arts movie.
Shane was the one who had come to provoke first, bringing a group of idle street hooligans, a textbook case of starting a disturbance.
The police station mediated the matter. The head officer personally stepped in. Since no one on either side was seriously injured, they decided to let each side go their own way. If they insisted on pursuing it further, they could file a civil lawsuit as was their right.
As for the consequences, Luis was released immediately.
Shane and his father Jason had used restricted knives. They were detained for ten days.
The head officer made the final decision decisively. Even Jason, the local despot, was dumbfounded. He tried to call in favors and pull strings, only to realize he had stepped on a landmine. How could he dare to object?
"Are you okay?"
Outside the police station, Deewa’s eyes glistened with tears. She slapped Luis and said, "You scared me to death! Are you brainless? There were so many of them, and he had a knife. Why did you just charge in like that?"
"What else was I supposed to do? Just stand there and watch you get bullied without doing anything, maybe put on a square dance performance for them?"
Luis pulled Deewa, who was crying so hard she looked like a pear blossom drenched in rain, into his arms and said softly,
"You’re no naive little girl either. In rural places like this, they prey on the weak and fear the strong. It’s useless to reason with them. They’ll only push harder."
"The only way to make sure your grandmother lives a comfortable life from now on is to teach them a harsh lesson."
"Jerk, jerk! Then why didn’t you call more people? You have so much money, couldn’t you have hired some? Why did you have to take the risk yourself?"
