I still can’t believe Winter would return to me. How did Selene make that happen? I would have known sooner, had I not been such an idiot to Kiara when we first met. She has been here almost a week, and I need to make more of an effort to get to know her properly. I still remember her father’s words.
"All I’ll say is that my pack treated her like a lesser being and I resent them for that because she is fiercely smart and protective of those she loves. And she was rejected very publicly on her 18th birthday for being wolfless. She is a shifter, and she isn’t a wolf. Her creature is way stronger than our wolves, and she is so much more intelligent."
I swallow. My mate is a fox shifter. I wonder how the pack will react. Well, to be honest, I do not care how they react. Her fox is gorgeous with that reddish gold fur, four swirling tails with silver at the tips, and her eyes. Fuck! Those big caramel eyes look back at me even in her fox form. I almost fainted when she told me her name. I’m taking this as Selene’s way to give me a true second chance with Kiara, I just don’t understand why she is a fox shifter instead of a wolf. I had no idea there were other shifters out there.
"And that, m’boy, is exactly why we chose the fox." Selene’s voice interrupts my train of thought. I am still standing in Luna’s office, lost in planning and wondering. She steps out from the bright silver light, but she is not alone. Behind her, a beautiful woman with almond eyes, high cheekbones, and sharp features walks out. "And this is my sister Inari." I bow to the Goddesses.
"It’s a pleasure Mother Inari." She laughs a rich deep laugh.
"Don’t be silly, boy. I am not as vain as my sister. It’s just Inari, and the pleasure is on my side, Alpha Maze. I am very curious about the mate Selene chose for one of my children. We don’t mix often, but she was very adamant that you were deserving of a fox as a mate. I must say you have been disappointed until now." I swallow. Oh no. They have been watching me. "Was that all you heard?" Inari asks, and I shake my head. Of course, it wasn’t, but if Mira is still alive and never came back to me. My heart hurts like someone stabbed it with a thousand knives. She truly didn’t want me as her mate. She wanted me as a means. Amber and everyone else were right. She was in that forest to do harm, not coming back to me. But why?
"No, Inari. I am sorry. I heard it all, and will be better with my mate, of that you have my word." I put my hand over my heart. "But if she’s alive, why didn’t she come back, Selene? What aren’t you telling me?"
