Chapter 119: Chapter 119 Setting an Example
Amber’s POV
It’s been a week since I was visited by Selene, and I have not told anyone of my revelations of that night, not even Chase.
He’s been the perfect mate, sweet, attentive and funny. He seems determined for me to like being here, so I will not leave, but he can’t be by my side at all times and others have made it perfectly clear that I am more than not welcome. His father is seemingly the lesser of my problems as I’ve experienced mockery and downright cruelty from others behind Chase’s back. My thought is they are hoping to have me run crying to my mate and taddle of how evil they are being to me, so they can show ’what a weak queen I will be’, but that will not happen. Not now, not ever!
I can feel the powers of the queen swirl through my veins at all times, and somehow they help me keep a clear head in tough situations, and most of the time I only roll my eyes at their weak attempts to get to me. Chase seems oblivious to the fact that his "friends" loathe me and want me gone. Especially some of the more entitled male and females from here.
Tomorrow is the time of the festival of the sun and moon, and Chase has shown me the robes of what we are supposed to do at this event. However his father didn’t seem to want to ’overwhelm’ me, so he decided to do the duties of the festival himself.
"To show our future queen the way to handle such a great task. Then the next time she will be more prepared for the events, and have more time to learn and adapt to our foreign costumes." I roll my eyes as I think back to his weak excuse to not let me be part of this.
The next day at sunrise I stand beside Chase in front of the temple for the sun goddess Solei. We are attending a mess in her honor, as we will attend a mess in the night when the moon is at its peak, and one in the afternoon when the sun and moon merge together in the sky.
Chase takes my hand and kisses it, smiling down at me. I feel the butterflies in my stomach do summersaults.
"Do you remember what I told you about this mess?" He asks and I nod. We are sitting up front, facing the rest of the nobles in the kingdom, who have gathered for the festival. Over the next month the other kingdoms will be arriving to assess the new ’outsider queen’, and hold the annual Gathering Of the Kings, where all make new alliances, rekindle friendships and trade news from the other parts of the dragon lands.
As we enter the church two big empty chairs are visible in front of the altar. The third chair has a young woman standing in front of it and I catch Callus smirk. This is planned ahead, and I’m sure they are counting on me throwing a fit. Well, well, well. How little they know me still.
"Father, what is Glaciel doing up there?" Chase questions, as the woman curtsey before her king and crown prince. She does a small one for me, but the victorious smile on her overly painted lips does not go by me without noticing.
"Your highnesses. This is really an honor! Thank you for the opportunity to honor our goddesses on this glorious morning." She says in a fake silky sweet voice that sounds rehearsed to no end.
"Glaciel, why are you standing in front of my Lady’s chair?" Chase asks, looking between his father and the woman. Glaciel does a little gasp, putting her hands over her mouth and widen her eyes. Damn, she’s good.
"I’m so sorry, my prince. I thought. But I must have mistaken the kind invitation of the King. I will take my leave immediately." She replies with the same fake sweet voice, just glazed with a small hint of sadness and confusion. She looks down seemingly in shame, but I have figured out what’s to happen next. Before the King can open his mouth I speak. freewebnoveℓ.com
"Miss. Glaciel, perhaps the King sent the invitation to join him and the prince before they went to my pack? Surely it wasn’t sent after I came back with the prince, even though it wasn’t certain if I would be accompanying them back to the dragon lands. But as I am sure I have seen your beautiful face around the palace, I wonder why you didn’t reach out to the King about the invitation still being valid or perhaps it was the King who failed to answer such an inquiry? By any of the outcomes, this really is an awkward situation for you, and would never want any of this sort to happen to a noble woman such as yourself. Could we perhaps bring another chair beside mine, so the noble Miss. will still attend as promised?" I smile a sweet smile at Chase, and bashes my eyes. He kisses my temple in front of the seething woman, and she starts to refuse my proposition.
"Oh no, princess. I could not do that to you! This is surely your seat, and I would be ashamed to sit beside your beauty and wilter." I applaud her in my mind. Such a good actress, but I am not the daughter of a queen for nothing!
"No no! I must insist on this. You were promised a seat here, and will not have it taken away just because of me. Please accept my apologies and sit with us." Chase orders a regular chair to be placed beside mine, and he takes my hand, helping me to sit down in my own high chair. frёeωebɳovel.com
Ignis is rolling over in laughter and amusement at the expense of the bitch being ridiculed like this. I feel a bit sorry for her, but on the other hand - Chase is MINE! And I will be damned to give any scornful vindictive exes any excuse to believe otherwise. I will not make the mistake of being too merciful as my mother was.
The church opens for the other nobles, and it doesn’t take long for people to notice the lonely woman in a regular chair beside me, and I make it a point to turn to her to make small polite conversation, so she can’t slip away! Am I evil? Perhaps, but this is an example to be sat!
’Baby, why are you insisting on Glaciel sitting beside you, when she was clearly trying to play at something?’ Chase asks in my mind as people are still finding their seats.
’Because I am setting an example! She was trying to butt in where she doesn’t belong with the help of your father, and I’m showing everyone what happens if someone else tries something similar, including your father.’ I answer defensively. Ignis scolds me for being harsh on our mate, but I shush her. He needs to have a small wake up call.
’This is not the first time while you’ve here, is it?’ He says quietly in my mind, his sad eyes locks on mine and he takes my hand in his and intertwines our fingers. I can hear how Glaciel is grinding her teeth in anger at this show of affection.
’Sadly no, my prince. But I can take it!’ I answer, wanting to console him a bit. Chase sighs.
’We will talk about this after the ceremony. I want to know why, when and where!’ He states, his eyes burning in rage on my behalf. I squeezed his finger, taking them to my mouth and kissing them.
’I promise. I need to tell you something else as well. Breathe, my love! I am okay, I’m here and I’m okay.’ I can feel the warmth from Chase subside as the people nearest to us are sweating from his aura.
