Chapter 9: Lesson learned

The rest of the lesson passed in a blur.

Not because Professor Bennett’s lecture was boring.

Although it probably was.

My attention was occupied by the throbbing pain in my thigh.

Every slight movement sent another sharp sting through my leg. The blood had mostly stopped flowing, but the dark stain on my uniform remained.

What bothered me even more was how normal everyone acted.

Emily sat at her desk taking notes.

Professor Bennett continued teaching.

The rest of the class listened.

As if a student getting stabbed with a pen was just another Tuesday.

Maybe it was.

This academy had already destroyed my standards for normal behavior.

I shifted slightly in my seat.

Instant regret.

Pain immediately shot through my leg.

While gritting my teeth, my gaze wandered across the classroom.

That was when I noticed her.

A girl sitting near the window.

She wasn’t looking at Professor Bennett.

She wasn’t looking at her notebook.

She was looking at my leg.

Specifically, the bloodstain.

Our eyes almost met.

Before they could, I saw her tongue slowly slide across her lips.

The movement lasted only a second.

Then she smiled.

A small smile.

A strange smile.

The kind of smile that immediately triggered every survival instinct I possessed.

A notification appeared.

______

Student Observation

Current Emotional State:

Interested

______

Interested?

Interested in what?

The blood?

The injury?

The fact that I had just been stabbed?

I immediately looked away.

For the first time since arriving in this world, I genuinely felt creeped out.

Not nervous.

Not uncomfortable.

Creeped out.

The image of that smile stayed in my head for the rest of the lesson.

Eventually the bell rang.

Students immediately began gathering their things.

I tried standing.

That turned out to be a mistake.

The moment I put weight on my injured leg, pain shot through my body.

"Easy."

Ryan immediately grabbed my shoulder.

"You look like you’re about to fall over."

"I might."

"No kidding."

Ryan glanced down at my leg.

His expression darkened.

"Let’s get you to the infirmary."

I wasn’t about to argue.

A few minutes later, Ryan was helping me walk through the hallway.

The process was slow.

Humiliating.

Painful.

Mostly painful.

Students occasionally stared as we passed.

Some looked concerned.

Others looked curious.

A few looked amused.

I was beginning to hate this place.

We had almost reached the main building when a familiar voice stopped us.

"Adrian."

My stomach dropped.

Ryan’s expression immediately became strained.

Slowly, we turned around.

Senior Bianca stood several meters away.

Her group of friends stood behind her.

Unlike usual, she wasn’t smiling.

That was somehow worse. freёweɓnovel.com

Bianca walked toward us.

Her eyes immediately landed on me.

Then on Ryan.

Then back on me.

"Did you forget our meeting?"

For a moment, I genuinely thought she was joking.

I looked down at my injured leg.

Then back at her.

Apparently she wasn’t.

"Senior Bianca—"

Ryan started speaking.

Big mistake.

The slap came without warning.

Crack.

The back of Bianca’s hand struck Ryan across the face.

His head snapped to the side.

The hallway immediately became silent.

Students nearby pretended not to notice.

A skill they had clearly practiced.

Ryan froze.

A red mark slowly appeared on his cheek.

Bianca didn’t even look at him.

Not once.

Her eyes remained fixed on me.

"When did I give you permission to speak?" she asked calmly.

Ryan lowered his head.

His jaw tightened.

But he didn’t answer.

Bianca finally looked at me again.

"I asked a question."

Her gaze moved toward my leg.

For a brief moment, I thought she might actually care.

Then she spoke.

"Did you forget our meeting?"

Apparently not.

I stared at her.

Then at Ryan.

Then at the system.

Because at this point, I was absolutely certain the system was about to make my life even worse.

And judging by the smile slowly returning to Bianca’s face, she was thinking exactly the same thing.

Bianca’s smile slowly widened.

That was never a good sign.

I had only known her for a few hours, but even I had figured that much out.

She looked at my injured leg.

Then at Ryan.

Then back at me.

A notification suddenly appeared.

______

[Choose Response]

[1] "I’m sorry, Senior Bianca."

[2] "I was on my way to the infirmary."

[3] Remain Silent

______

I didn’t get a chance to choose.

Bianca waved her hand dismissively.

"Actually, never mind."

The notification vanished.

My stomach sank.

That couldn’t be good.

Bianca glanced at the girls behind her.

"Take him."

The command was simple.

Immediate.

Absolute.

Three girls stepped forward without hesitation.

"What—"

Before I could finish speaking, one grabbed my arm.

Another grabbed the other side.

A third positioned herself behind me.

My injured leg immediately protested.

Pain shot through my thigh.

"Move."

"I can walk."

One of the girls laughed.

"That’s not the point."

The grip on my arms tightened.

A second later, I was being dragged down the hallway.

Students quickly moved out of the way.

Nobody intervened.

Nobody questioned it.

Nobody even looked surprised.

Apparently this wasn’t unusual enough to attract attention.

I twisted my head.

Ryan was still standing where we’d left him.

His cheek was bright red.

The mark from Bianca’s slap was impossible to miss.

For a moment, our eyes met.

Ryan looked furious.

Helpless.

Mostly helpless.

But he didn’t move.

Couldn’t move.

Everyone here understood the same thing.

Standing up to Bianca Hartwell was a good way to make your life significantly worse.

Eventually, Ryan disappeared from view as the girls dragged me around a corner.

My thigh throbbed with every step.

The bloodstain on my uniform wasn’t getting any smaller either.

Bianca walked ahead of us as if this were a perfectly normal afternoon.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

A smile immediately appeared.

The genuine kind.

Which somehow felt more disturbing than her fake ones.

Bianca accepted the call.

"Hello?"

She listened for a few seconds.

Then she laughed.

"Of course I’m excited."

Another pause.

"Why wouldn’t I be?"

The girls dragging me continued walking.

I wished they wouldn’t.

Every movement hurt.

Bianca glanced over her shoulder at me.

Her smile widened.

"Actually, I already got the toy I was talking about."

My stomach dropped.

Please don’t mean me.

Please don’t mean me.

I already knew she meant me.

The person on the other end apparently asked another question.

Bianca sighed dramatically.

"Unfortunately, it got damaged."

Her eyes drifted toward the bloodstain on my thigh.

A chill ran down my spine.

"Nothing serious."

She laughed softly.

"Just a little damage."

Another pause.

Then her expression darkened.

"Oh, don’t worry."

The warmth disappeared from her voice.

"I’ll punish the person responsible for damaging my toy soon enough."

My stomach twisted.

The person responsible.

Emily.

She was talking about Emily.

Somehow that realization wasn’t reassuring.

Not when Bianca sounded genuinely angry.

The call continued for another minute before she finally ended it.

The smile returned immediately.

Like a switch being flipped.

She slipped the phone back into her pocket.

Then she looked at me.

Not at my face.

Not at my injury.

At me.

The way someone might look at an expensive possession.

A notification suddenly appeared.

I didn’t like where this was going.

Not even a little.

Another notification immediately appeared beneath it.

The choices hovered in front of me as Bianca continued walking.

For some reason, I had a feeling that none of the options would end well.
