Chapter 192: Predator Part 2
Dave had just regained awareness after being released from the Dreamveil Monarch’s control, and the first thing he saw was death.
Wolfy’s massive body blurred forward, jaws opening wide, teeth gleaming as it prepared to tear him apart. Unlike the insects, this was a pure predator that was designed to kill, and it showed in its overbearing bloodlust.
His eyes widened.
White energy began gathering instinctively, but he knew it was too late.
In a split second, the Fenrir had closed the distance between them.
Time seemed to slow for Dave as he faced death in the face and even felt its hot breath on his face. Wolfy’s jaw was open wide enough to chomp off half of the man’s body with ease, and its fangs didn’t look like they would struggle to do so either.
’I guess this is it?’
The only thing the man could do was accept his fate at the hands of the controlled Fenrir.
But then it suddenly disappeared.
Ethan unsummoned Wolfy at the exact moment before impact for effect.
’Not only is it funny, but it also makes that beast drop its guard.’
He had noticed something very important.
The higher the rank of the beast, the more intelligent they were on average. Of course, some were smarter than others, and that manifested in different ways, but it wasn’t always an advantage either.
Intelligent meant thoughts, and thinking allowed for manipulation and deceit, which Ethan was good at in the realm of combat.
As soon as he unsummoned Wolfy, he resummoned it right next to the Dreamveil Monarch.
The butterfly-like creature was baffled.
In an instant, its control over the B Rank Fenrir had shattered, and it appeared in the air next to it. It hadn’t even imagined something like that was possible to have been able to foresee it, let alone react to it.
’That really is an overpowered function of Beast Summoning.’
Ethan smirked slightly.
The cost was nothing compared to the utility of being able to position his beasts anywhere he could see.
’And mental effects reset when they are unsummoned.’
That was definitely good to know and also made sense since there was no longer a target to affect. And now not only had the Dreamveil Monarch wasted a large portion of its mana trying to do so, but it had to deal with the Fenrir that was upon it.
Wolfy didn’t hesitate.
Its jaws clamped down onto the Dreamveil Monarch’s body, holding on as they both plummeted to the ground. Then, with its neck muscles alone, the Fenrir pinned it and began tearing away at the giant butterfly’s fragile frame.
The beast was helpless to resist.
Its wings flailed, light flickering from them, but it was to no avail.
The predator had its prey, and nobody was going to take it away from it.
Ethan watched with cold satisfaction.
’That’s one down.’
"Now give it everything you have and focus on the other two beasts!" he shouted.
He was completely certain that the butterfly-like creature was as good as dead, which left two more beasts for them to take on together. But as he glanced at his two companions, his expression twitched slightly.
Because somehow, despite how simple that instruction was, they still messed up his plan...
-
Everything had gone perfectly, even better than Ethan had predicted.
The Dreamveil Monarch, the most troublesome and unpredictable of the three beasts, was now pinned beneath Wolfy. Its elegant wings were torn and shredded as the Fenrir continued ripping into it without mercy.
There was no more hypnotic glow, illusions, or control, just a slow, painful death.
But he was honestly surprised that its abilities had worked on Wolfy in the first place.
That alone was a testament to the creature’s power.
Though rather than hypnosis or control, Ethan suspected that it was closer to influence. From the effect it had on himself, Dave, and his beast, it was like it could put people into a trance.
One where things were twisted in their minds. freewebnoveℓ.com
Initially, it seemed as though it had tried to get the Fenrir to attack him, since he was closest to it and the greatest threat, but Wolfy resisted deeply. So much so that it switched targets to Dave, which was a wise choice since the white-eyed man who could shoot lasers was also a major threat.
’It’s like when I was attacking the Bulldozer, for a short period he had become my enemy. Thankfully, I instinctively held back and wasn’t influenced enough to kill him.’
The fact that the grey-skinned man was alive proved his theory, since if it had been able to control him completely, he would have summoned all three of his beasts and massacred both the Bulldozer and Dave with ease.
’Not that it matters now.’
Ethan rolled his shoulders slightly, his hawk-like eyes flicking between the two remaining enemies.
’Your defence is impressive, but at this range you can’t do anything.’
’And I already clipped your wings, so you’re pretty much done for.’
He made eye contact with each of the beasts as if they could hear his thoughts or understand them, even if they somehow could.
A grin tugged at his lips.
’I’m literally carrying this group.’
It wasn’t arrogance, but the simple truth.
All they had to do was listen to him and follow his lead to end things swiftly.
And for the most part, they did.
The Bulldozer snorted loudly, his breath ragged as he scraped his foot against the ground before launching forward once again.
"RAAAAHHH!"
He charged the Steel Scarab without hesitation, his hardened horn leading the way as he slammed into the massive insect. Even after so many failed attempts, he still attacked without hesitation.
Clang!
The impact rang out again, like metal on metal.
Just like before, it did nothing.
The beetle did not budge, not even slightly, but that was fine, and Ethan had never expected it to.
’He just needs to keep it busy.’
And to his credit, the Bulldozer had been doing exactly that.
Again.
And again.
Relentless, furious, and unstoppable in his own way.
That left Dave, who just had to ruin things for Ethan with his stupidity...
