Chapter 36: Switch

Fenrir moved from the wall and stretched itself. The boss stood as it assessed both of them. "None of the others I fought had this ability...." The boss said as it dusted its furry body as it stepped forward.

"...The Hunt." Its red eyes were focused on Lumi as it spoke the words. "Of course if they did, maybe they would have survived."

The boss pointed with its claws to one part of the cave. There was a group of corpses lying about. A couple of them had their bodies mutilated. The only recognizable features were their wolf ears and tails.

Lumi’s blood ran cold as she saw the sight. Her teeth gritted as she clenched her fist.

Julius was running mental calculations for the best way to use the switch skill. If the plan he thought up was to succeed, he needed to do the most work.

’Can I use the Architect Eye and Coordinate abilities together?’

[Yes with trial mode it is possible but this will heavily tax your body]

Julius dismissed the screen and turned to Lumi. "We’ll attack as plan..."

"You bastard!!"

Julius’s words were cut off as Lumi dashed towards the boss in a fit of rage.

The Lycan closed the distance, claws extended as she jumped, aiming for Fenrir’s face, Her silver eyes filled with anger.

Fenrir wasn’t bothered in the slightest. The moment Lumi was close. It sidestepped and her claws met nothing but air.

Before she could react, It grabbed her midsection in the air and slammed her into the ground.

The impact shook Lumi, releasing a wave of pain through her body. Fenrir wasted no time, molding its hand into a fist to strike her before she could recover herself.

Lumi disappeared. A rock took her place as Fenrir’s fist came down, shattering it to pieces..

The lycan reappeared instantly with a pop sound, two meters to Julius’s left. She looked around processing what had happened and stood up. She was about to charge again when Julius gave her a stern look

"Do you want to get yourself killed?" he asked.

Lumi paused for a moment. "He killed them."

Julius looked at the lycan. Her claws were out and her canines were exposed as she took a breath. He didn’t care about the slaughtered lycans but he understood the pain she was in.

However he needed Lumi to not get herself killed

"Dead people don’t avenge anyone. We’ll take it down"

Lumi looked at him. There was something she wanted to say but decided against. A nod was what she offered as she readied herself.

Fenrir had turned. Its furry face had contorted into visible irritation. "This power of yours. I have never seen it. Human."

Me neither.

The grin was back on its furry face. It rushed at both of them, going low as it spread its arms wide to catch both of them.

Lumi jumped to the side and Julius gestured the switch skill with a nearby shield. Fenrir’s claws passed through empty air where both of them had been.

The boss turned its head towards Julius’s direction and lunged.

He activated the wardstone as Fenrir’s strike came down. The claws clashed against the barrier and the force sent both of them sliding back in opposite directions.

[Wardstone: Recharging]

He gripped his dagger and rushed at Fenrir. The boss found the action amusing and raised its hand in a half-hearted attempt to strike.

Julius coiled his fingers into a fist. The gesture he had set for the heavy skill.

[Heavy - vv.]

[Increases the effective weight of targets within the Coordinate zone..]

Fenrir’s hand dropped earlier than it expected. Its knee hit the ground as an invisible force pressed it to the ground. Julius drove the dagger into its right shoulder, twisting it enough to cause Fenrir to roar in pain.

However the effect of the heavy skill was short-lived as the boss tried to get up again.

[Switch.]

Julius disappeared before its claws closed on where he had been.

Fenrir got back to its feet. The weight on it had worn off and it was angry now. There was an unmistakable growl as it watched Julius who had appeared near the part of the cave Lumi had slammed it with earlier. It looked at the dagger still embedded in its shoulder, pulling it out and then tossing it away.

"You are without a weapon now," Fenrir said.

Julius smiled. "Stupid dog."

He picked up a rock from the ground.

[Switch]

The rock disappeared as the Dagger replaced it instantaneously with a popping sound.

Fenrir’s eyes widened but before he could say anything else.

Srhhhh!! Srhhhh!!

Lumi’s claws shredded Fenrir’s furry back enough to make it yell again. The Boss swung to retaliate but was met with nothing but air as the switch skill took effect.

The Lycan appeared beside Julius. She was smiling now as she raised a fist towards him. He looked at the attempt to fist bump and acknowledged it.

Fenrir’s eyes narrowed. "You two are making a mockery of me. Do you think you have what it takes to beat me? "

"You aren’t so tough after all," Julius said. It was a lie but he needed to keep annoying the boss.

"We’ll see." freёwebnovel.com

Fenrir spread its arms by its sides and inhaled then held it for a moment.

Here it comes.

Then it exhaled.

Mist poured from its mouth in a thick wave, filling the chamber within seconds. Fenrir moved back slowly as the mist spread. Its red eyes were the last thing they could see before it disappeared.

Julius felt a rush of movement towards his direction. Fenrir appeared faster than he expected. The switch skill took effect but when Julius reappeared there was a gash on his arm.

The boss was fast enough to react to the switch now.

The switch skill brought Julius and Lumi to one corner of the cave. Corpses of adventurers were strewn about. For a brief moment he wondered if he would be able to do some grave robbery when this was all over.

He had scratches and bruises on parts of his body. Lumi, on the other hand wasn’t so lucky. The lycan was bleeding from several gashes. The Hunt had helped improve her physical abilities but she was finding it hard to keep up with the boss through the mist.

The cave was a bit emptier as the remaining adventurers had left while they were busy with the boss. Occasionally it would try to kill one of them as they left only to have the switch skill disorient it, making it even angrier.

Branthir and the dwarf from earlier had offered to join them but Julius couldn’t keep track of many people using the switch skill and told them to leave. Daren, Neznala and Kieran also left. Kieran was unconscious when the other two carried him out.

Daren had also offered to help but he was injured and his brother needed to be attended to. He promised to rush back once he got Kieran the attention he needed.

Eventually, the only people that remained were Xavier and Joan. The former had elected to stay because he was essential for Julius’s plan and the latter wanted to keep an eye on things despite still recovering from their injuries. Both of them waited outside the cave’s entrance.

Julius and Lumi had been keeping up with the boss using a combination of Lumi’s hunt, the switch skill and the Architect eye. Lumi did most of the attacks while Julius dealt damage to the shoulder he had stabbed earlier.

The switch skill pulled them out of risky situations, but Fenrir was getting faster and adapting to it. The mist provided cover for it, forcing both of them to move defensively.

Both of them stood back to back. The lycan’s weight was heavy against his back. He could feel the heat from her through his clothes. Her breathing was heavier now. She was getting tired and so was he.

I haven’t eaten breakfast. The Architect’s Eye and Coordinate are draining me.

"Can you smell your defeat now?" Fenrir asked as he walked, revealing himself partly as the mist swirled around him. Its eyes were much redder than before. Its movements were a bit sluggish compared to before.

Julius and Lumi looked at each other. They weren’t the only ones affected by the fight but the boss was in a better state compared to them.

Julius steadied his breathing to speak. "So your true power comes from the mist after all. I guess something like that must have its limit?"

"Correct. After using it, I have to wait for a few minutes before I can use it again. There is no way for you to beat me as long as the mist is up." A wolfish grin followed the words.

Idiot. Pride cometh before a fall.

"A power fit for a cowardly dog," Julius said.

Fenrir’s eyes flashed. For a moment, the grin disappeared as a growl escaped from it.

"Maybe. But I have the upper hand," Fenrir replied.

"True. But if the mist were to disappear!!" Julius yelled watching Fenrir’s reaction.

Fenrir frowned before the realization hit it. Someone was muttering in the cave and the voice. It was Xavier casting a spell. The same one from earlier that removed the mist. The elf was inside the cave as his spell had a limited range.

"Noooo!!!" The boss yelled and disappeared into the mist.

"Lumi," Julius yelled.

The Lycan was already in pursuit as this was the plan Julius had set in motion. Fenrir was fast but his footsteps were enough for her to follow. The mist was slowly dissipating as the spell took effect.

Julius stayed back and watched everything unfold with the Eye. He recalled when he explained the plan to Xavier and the latter protested about being bait. The fear that was once in the elf was gone, replaced by determination.

The spell was almost complete just as Fenrir lunged to reach the elf. The Eye mapped everything in its world of blue. Fenrir was fast but the eye offered Julius enhanced perception as its bloodied claws came down on Xavier.
