Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Sister’s Talent

"Submissions describing Demons? Aren’t you collecting folklore?"

Lloyd asked, a bit puzzled.

"Well, it’s like this..."

Evelor started to explain, then disappeared into her room. She returned, hugging the Hammerhead Shark Puppet, and pulled Lloyd down to sit on the sofa before telling him all about her recent work.

Basically, her employer, the kind Miss Desda, had very broad requirements for ’folklore.’ So broad that as long as it was a complete story that was even slightly related to a legend, it was acceptable, regardless of its length, writing style, or specific content.

Of course, it had to be complete. A story that was only half-finished wouldn’t do!

This caused Evelor’s workload to double, and she was always receiving some strange submissions.

For example, that submission from before, "The Erotic Secret History of the Veto Saint," had left a very deep impression on Lloyd. A critical one, of course. Don’t get the wrong idea...

’Considering that, I guess submissions about Demons are actually pretty normal, then?’

Lloyd then changed the subject and asked:

"Speaking of which, how long does Miss Desda plan on being a folklorist? It’s been over a week this time, right? Is she not planning to switch careers yet?"

He had met Miss Desda a few times. She was beautiful, kind-hearted, from a good family, and well-mannered, completely free of that high-and-mighty arrogance. If there was one problem, it was probably her love for stirring things up and changing jobs.

In her own words:

"A monotonous life is the murder of my existence, so I hope to live a life that’s different every day."

Anyway, she had tried most of the jobs on the market. Every time she changed careers, the longest she’d stick with it was a week, and the shortest was about half a day. It had gotten to the point where she could only pick obscure professions to try.

Evelor blinked, snuggled the Hammerhead Shark Puppet in her arms, and explained:

"Well... Miss Desda seems to be serious this time? Anyway, she said that if she doesn’t achieve something, she’ll be forced to get married... And this job seems to be a way to help her butler, Mr. Randolph, with something?"

"Mr. Randolph?"

"That’s right. Do you remember, Yi?"

"Of course. He’s helped us out a lot. Even the major I chose in college was his suggestion. He said something about the ’Great Expansion’ being imminent, and that there would definitely be a need for a lot of talent in civil engineering... Then you and Miss Desda also pushed for it, which is why I chose it for college."

Lloyd said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, then followed up with another question:

"I’m just curious. Mr. Randolph is a very powerful Extraordinary Being, right? How could Miss Desda possibly help him?"

"That... I don’t know either? I don’t understand these things..."

"Then... could there be any safety risks?"

Lloyd asked, a little worried.

A favor needed by an Extraordinary Powerhouse was unlikely to be simple, which was naturally cause for concern.

But Evelor seemed to trust him completely, replying nonchalantly:

"No way. Don’t worry, Yi. Mr. Randolph is a very cautious and meticulous person. He’s also patient and responsible. Even the submissions we receive every day pass through his hands first before they’re given to me."

"Is that so? That’s good."

Lloyd nodded, feeling much more relieved.

With an Extraordinary Powerhouse out front, he wouldn’t have to worry about his sister coming into contact with any dangerous Forbidden Knowledge.

Then, Lloyd thought for a moment and activated [Inspect], checking his sister’s status—

[Target: Evelor]

[Status: Normal]

[Rationality: 7]

[Spiritual Power: 3]

[Inspiration: 2]

[Cognition: 6]

For an ordinary person who had never come into contact with the mysterious or the Extraordinary Realm, these Attributes were quite high, and very reasonably distributed.

Lloyd remembered being very surprised the first time he inspected her a while back, suspecting that his sister was the real [Qualified] one.

After that, he would check his sister’s status every day, mainly to monitor her mental state, just to be at ease.

Of course, even if his sister might be very talented in this area, he would never suggest she walk this path.

’The mysterious and the extraordinary are just too dangerous. It’s better for me to bear it all myself. My sister should just enjoy her life and do the things she likes.’

The next day, Lloyd arrived early at the Eighteenth District. Just as he walked out of the ’subway station,’ he saw Weiya’s lovely figure standing by the entrance.

It seemed like a chance encounter, but she might have also been waiting for him specifically.

Lloyd walked over and greeted her:

"Morning~ Miss Weiya."

"Hello~ Lloyd. You can just call me Weiya from now on."

She said this with her usual seriousness, then immediately cut to the chase:

"I need your help today to complete the report about yesterday’s operation."

"Sure, no problem."

The two of them went to Weiya’s office. As soon as they sat down, Lloyd took out the little kitten and traded it for an action report from Weiya’s hands.

It described the course of yesterday’s operation, but it only went up to the point where they entered the cell.

"My memory of what happened after that is very fuzzy and confused, so I need you to help fill in the rest."

Weiya said while petting the little kitten. She no longer seemed to mind revealing her preferences in front of Lloyd.

"Actually, my memory is also a mess. I pretty much only remember you rushing forward first, and then..."

Lloyd said, reciting the excuse he had prepared in advance. He was being deliberately vague, only emphasizing that they had fought side-by-side, like comrades who had been through life and death together.

Coincidentally, when he destroyed the giant cicada’s vocal organ, he had used Weiya’s knife, which served as related physical evidence.

Weiya didn’t question him. She even helped him explain:

"This is actually a common occurrence. Many heroes in the Sect have encountered situations where their consciousness becomes chaotic, and they defeat powerful enemies purely on instinct... It’s just that we were luckier; neither of us has any lingering side effects."

’I see. No wonder no one pressed me for details...’

Lloyd mused to himself, but what he said out loud was an emotional sigh:

"Looking back on it now, it’s truly terrifying..."

"I’m sorry, it was my fault. I wasn’t in the right state of mind. Thank goodness you were there..."

Weiya said, her beautiful eyes staring intently at Lloyd. She then added with extra gravity:

"You’re the most brilliant genius I’ve ever met. In the future, you’re sure to become a hero of the Sect, and even of all humanity!"

Lloyd smiled and replied humbly:

"Thank you. I believe that day will come soon."

Weiya was taken aback. She wanted to retort but hesitated.

In the end, she could only say to herself:

’If only you were a little more modest...’
