Chapter 5: Chapter 5 - Finding a job

Vincent sat on the chair and glanced at Hera who changed her clothes. She caught his gaze.

The sun was now bright, shining through the window. The warmth accomplished by the light hugged him tight, fighting off the chill he experienced earlier.

She made breakfast and sat on the table.

"Enjoy the meal." She pointed at the pancake.

Vincent gulped and asked. "It isn’t going to be my last meal right?"

"Huh?" Hera voiced.

Vincent laughed and waved his hand. "It is just a joke."

"Not a very good one." Hera glanced at him. "Don’t worry, it is not like I am popular or anything. I am a washed up hero from the past."

"How long?" He asked.

"About 20 years." Hera admitted. "I doubt you even knew of my hero’s name."

"Yeah." Vincent scratched his head. He most likely won’t know even if she was popular. "So you decide to return to heroism."

"Not yet. I am just trying out my old costume." Hera said, covering her face. "It isn’t looking good right?"

"No. No. It looked wonderful."

She looked through the gaps between her fingers. "Then, why do you think I work as a porn star?"

"It is just a misunderstanding." Vincent said in a hurry and began to explain his train of thoughts.

Hera listened.

"Now that you explain clearly, I can see why you assume that way." Hera said, staring at him. "You are smart."

"Thanks." Vincent accepted the compliment.

"You want a job right?"

"Yeah, I will leave after this and disappear from you. Your secret is safe with me." Vincent assured that at the very least.

"I am not worried about that." Hera said. "I think I have a job suited for you."

"Really? What kind of job?" Vincent asked, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.

"Wait a moment, I will ask." Hera stood up from the seat and walked over to the living room. She tapped on her watch and called someone.

Vincent waited while enjoying the freshly made pancake. He tried listening but heard nothing. After a few minutes, she came back with a smile.

"Good news."

"I am glad." Vincent nodded. "You haven’t told me what kind of job is? A cleaning job?"

Hera shook her head. "I don’t think your talent is suited for that."

"My talent?" Vincent said ,pointing at his chest.

"Yes. The job is to be the apprentice of the detective."

"Handyman? Well, if the pay is good, I can do it." Vincent shrugged.

"The job is not guaranteed yet. He said he would interview you." Hera replied.

"I see. Well, it is even better. I don’t want to put you in a difficult situation." Vincent nodded.

They ate the breakfast in silence and Vincent helped her clean up the table. As he was cleaning the dishes, Hera came to his side and asked.

"Do you think I can do it?" She asked in a soft voice.

Vincent picked up her worry and anxiety in her and grabbed her hand. His boldness seemed to surprise her as she immediately stared at him.

Vincent gave her a big smile. "Don’t think about it too much? You want to save others right?"

She nodded.

"Then, no one will trouble you. Of course, I am not including Villains and monsters."

Hera laughed and nodded slowly. "I will try."

Vincent let go of her hand and he noticed the new change in her. He still wanted to hold her hand but she was hot. Literally. Her skin felt like the surface of the hot pan.

"I have a few suggestions." He said.

"Hmm."

"Change your costume."

"I know it. I don’t look good in that right?" Hera let out a long sigh, her black hair flowed down to the side, revealing white neck.

Vincent pulled himself from biting the neck. His horniness surprised him. He just had sex like yesterday with Eris and it was a very satisfying sex.

Normally, he would calm down for a week but his little brother was acting up.

Vincent frowned and looked down.

"Don’t get me wrong, Hera. You look absolutely wonderful. There is no mistake in that but I don’t think the boldness in your costume suited you well with your current maturity."

"Ah. Guess it makes sense."

Steam raised out from her head.

’Power related to emotions?’ Vincent smiled slyly and ignored her.

After cleaning up, they went to the living room and rested.

Hera said she would take him to the detective office after lunch. Vincent tried to leave on his own but she said she also wanted to go out.

As for the reason, to get a new costume.

Hera took out her car from the garage. She rolled down the window and called Vincent who was looking up at the sky with a daze.

Vincent woke up from the day dream and walked over to her, opening the door. He entered inside.

"Woah, I like the car."

"You don’t need to flatter me all the time." Hera laughed. "The car is an old model. I look like grandma right?"

Vincent shook his head and smiled. "No, I am telling the truth. I really liked the car. Those flying cars seemed like a massive headache. And who would dare to call you a grandma. They must be blind."

"It is just the words of the children in the neighborhood." Hera laughed.

She started the car and drove off. Vincent turned to the street and started looking around. His eyes picked very distinct details of the new world. The streets were clean because of the small robot scattering around, picking up trash.

He didn’t know whether he wanted to laugh at how the people didn’t change or be surprised at their invention.

’Guess, other than superpower and technology, everything is the same.’

As he was pondering through the white sky, the car turned sharply to the side. She began to pick up speed, surpassing 100 miles per hour in a second.

Vincent grabbed the handle on the ceiling and looked at Hera. The mature lady was calm and collected. She even hummed a ton and she rolled down the street at such speed.

When the car got close to the tunnel, she entered inside. Vincent expected to encounter some sort of underground highway but it reached the dead end. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Dread coiled up from his spine, reaching down into his heart. Vincent closed his eyes.

The pain didn’t come as he expected. Instead, he felt the car slow down and come to a stop.

He opened his eyes slowly, fully expecting to see Series again but instead, he faced a wall.

A hand reached out to his face, carelessly pulling from away from the wall. He turned to Hera and she smiled.

"Good. I forgot to mention about the place we are going to."

"I can tell."

She let go of his face. "Oh sorry about that."

Vincent didn’t mention it and looked outside. It was a dome-like structure, probably extended around the portion of the city.

Hera got out of the car. He followed.

"This place is the world of superheroes built by the government. Here, you can buy everything related to superheroes. And a lot of heroes hang around as well."

Vincent stared at her with confusion and asked.

"Wait, how many heroes lived in this city?"

Hera put a finger on her lips and tilted her head, thinking deeply. "About 150, I think. But not all people here have power fitted for Superheroes."

"Ah. Understand." Vincent nodded. Just like the athletes in his world, not everyone had the chance to compete in the Olympics.

The same logic probably applied to super power as well. He rubbed his chin and smiled softly, hiding behind Hera.

If that meant, he could try copying at the weaker power and see if he can merge the two useless.

Although the time limit was the hard limit, he believed he would encounter some power that didn’t have harsh conditions like Hera.

Forcefully kissing her was an option but he didn’t want to risk that ruin their relationship. And deep inside he believed he and Hera would be friends, despite the obvious age difference.

He learned that she was 42.

’Maybe her power has some kind of slow aging?’

Hera dragged him out of the dream and walked through the street. Vincent noticed people around him. The surface and underground looked the same. freёwebnoѵel.com

Except for the artificial sun on the dome ceiling, everything was replicated. Another difference was not all humans were the same. He didn’t mean that in their skin color.

Wait, he squinted his eyes as he saw some purple colored woman passing beside him. She was tall, almost reaching his height. He should disclose his own height, it was 6 ft 2 inches.

The purple colored woman noticed his glance and winked at him with a devilish smile.

"Don’t stare at the stranger, Vinx." Hera said, her eyes looked complicated.

Vincent smiled and gave her a nod. She stopped at the shady building. Unlike the buildings around it, it looked like it was built in the 90s.

"This is the place." She said, "Don’t be fooled by the appearance. He is the best detective I know."

"Really?" Vincent was impressed. Since Hera was a hero, she must have some sort of connection. For her to say with this much confidence, he indeed wanted to meet the man.
