Chapter 148: Return, Mark of Inheritance

--

Ren needed time to let everything sink in.

He looked as if his soul were snatched out of him when Mikel and Alex found him. He appeared accompanied by a bright light that was noticeable within the clan—the same way the other geniuses appeared after returning to the real world.

They were worried, of course. They thought something bad happened to Ren, but he assured them that he’s just adjusting to the sudden brightness and lightness he’s feeling. The trial grounds were so dark and depressing that Ren had grown used to it, so being back to where it’s bright, sunny, and lively required adjustment.

Fortunately, Mikel and Alex bought his reason. It wasn’t really strange; they heard others felt the same way, so they left him alone after a while, and that’s all Ren needed to settle everything that happened before he left.

He didn’t expect to be kicked out just like that. He thought that after receiving the godly Sky Archon’s legacy, he’d have some time to, at least, study it in the trial grounds.

Ren wanted to stay the whole two years. He wanted every morsel of benefit he could get out of that place, so he was a little bummed that he returned so abruptly and without his consent too.

Sure, he’s got the very thing he wanted there in the first place, but still...a notice that he was being kicked out would’ve been nice. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

Speaking of that legacy, though...

Ren closed his eyes and sank his perception inward. He couldn’t see the interior workings of his body—he doesn’t have that so-called ’inner sight’—but he could feel something extra in his mind.

A mark...or is it a sigil?

It’s there in his subconscious...or at least, that’s where Ren thinks it was. It pulses but very slowly, twice every minute.

He could see this...mark, or sigil, somewhat clearly. It bore striking resemblance to the complete image of the complete inheritance of the Godly Sky Archon when he combined all four sections of it.

This thing branded itself to his mind, maybe even his soul. It’s something that, along with the tribal tattoos on his arms, is his now, and nobody could take it away even after his death.

At least, that’s how it felt for him.

Each time this mark pulses, something changes within Ren. It’s nothing visible or sensible for that matter. On the outside, everything about him seems rather the same. But Ren could feel it.

Freedom...what it means is fusing with his very being. The very same understanding he came to upon analyzing what the Godly Sky Archon’s inheritance was all about.

The [Great Freedom Scripture]—an artwork created by a man who dreamed of becoming the freest person in the entire universe...this was his mark, one that he tried to pass onto his kind, who unfortunately couldn’t understand it.

Ren came and did, so now, it was his. The Godly Sky Archon’s legacy lives on with him from now on, and it can’t be taken away from him. Not by some thieves, not by any martial artists or gods, and certainly, not by the Old Ones.

The [Great Freedom Scripture] is not a martial art, nor is it a combat technique, nor is it something that transforms a Sky Archon’s wings.

It is a way of life condensed into a scripture that transforms one’s mentality, and this subtly influences the user’s state of mind. And when the mind is determined to see a change, the body follows.

In short, this legacy doesn’t contain any explosive moves, nor does it have directions for Ren what to do with it. It’s just lines of profound text that he must memorize and interpret on his own. Doing so will bring him closer and closer to what the Godly Sky Archon was when he was still alive.

As for how Ren interprets this whole thing, well, that’s up to him. That’s the whole idea of freedom, isn’t it? That its meaning cannot be the same between two people. It’s what makes it so unique.

Ren still finds it funny, actually. Because this isn’t what the hero received in the canon.

It has the same, yes. But the Great Freedom Scripture that the hero received works entirely differently.

What the hero received was an art that makes him immune to all forms of ’control’—whether that be restriction on his movement, a ban on his chakra, limitations on his abilities, or even a subtle influence on his mind; this technique breaks all of those.

That’s what it does for the hero, and it’s easy to see why, even at the very end, he still relied on it.

This was one of the earliest, most broken ’cheats’ that the hero of this story received. He used it so much that he’d be nowhere if he never had it in the first place. Basically, it’s his jailbreak tool whenever he finds himself in situations that happened exactly because of him.

But Ren’s was different. The godly Sky Archon appeared before him and allowed him to personally witness what it’s like and what the legacy was supposed to be.

He didn’t teach Ren exactly, and Ren didn’t need to be taught; he just needed to realize. And realize he most certainly did.

Ren’s [Great Freedom Scripture] was the real one. It infuses the very attribute and concept of freedom to his entire existence each time that mark on his subconsciousness pulses.

He doesn’t even need to do anything for this to happen.

As for what it does, well, it could do everything that the Hero could, but innately. He doesn’t need to spend chakra to break restrictions; his chakra itself contains that concept. Not just his chakra, his body, mind, and spirit—all of it contains the aspect of freedom.

Ren just needs time. And he’s young, too. He’s got so much to live for. He’s got so much time ahead of him.

So long as he keeps at it, surpassing the feat of the Godly Sky Archon should be within his range, right?

Ren couldn’t help but feel excited about this concept.

But that is a very distant goal. Right now, he had to adjust to the real world again. He’s been away for quite some time, and it turns out he was far more exhausted than he thought he was, too.

He’ll take a three-day break to ease up. After that, it’s back to the usual grind.

Ren had so many things he wanted to do now that he’s back. He’s got a lot of things to add to the clan’s martial hall, and he’s got to update or create new martial arts for him to use. frёewebnoѵēl.com

Also, it’s about time for the pain demon art to be updated.

"I don’t know why you’re mad all of a sudden, and frankly, I don’t care. This was what I intended to do from the very beginning; you know that. You agreed to that."

"..."

"And that’s exactly what I did! I passed my inheritance to the right person! That’s what this is all about to begin with, right?"

"Vordt created these trial grounds behind my back to defy my orders for the first and last time, ever. He left my inheritance here hoping that someone will inherit it as a way to remind everybody that we, the Sky Archons, once roamed these lands!"

"I came here when I sensed this connection. It’s my inheritance. I’m the one who made it, and I passed it on to the person who obviously understood what it was! I did everything that was supposed to happen. Why are you fucking mad?"

"..."

"Ahh...I see now. So that’s what it is, huh?"

"You think that because you ’oh-so-graciously’ granted Vordt the chance to leave this place behind that you get to decide who the right person was. Isn’t that so?"

"..."

"Whoa! That look on your face is all I need to confirm that I hit the nail right on the head. But I must say, how incredibly naive of you."

"Dear Spire Manager, As far as I know, people like you should be busy. But it seems that you are an exception. Why, you certainly have so much free time in your hands to be interfering with things that should be out of your control!"

"I wonder what your fellow Spire managers would say should they learn of this."

"..."

"A threat, you say? My, how could you think so little of me! I am merely interpreting what I’m seeing. Though, I certainly couldn’t control what you think, so if you think that I’m threatening you, then sure, be my guest."

"Besides, I’m very interested in what Manager Isolde will say if she ever learns of your...transgressions."

"..."

"Now that is a face I recall. You wore the same scowl since I’ve made you eat my dirt back at the tournament. It’s been so long, so long, I thought you’d already forgotten how."

"You’re still as useless as you ever were. You couldn’t even meet my gaze properly when I was still alive, and even now that I’m just a mere ghost, you’re still helpless against me."

"Man, no wonder you groveled at the feet of your predecessor. How you became a champion will forever elude me."
