Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Estrus Period

Dinner in the Inner Sanctum was usually a very quiet and elegant affair, but tonight, Yue Yue was a total mess.

Her mind was racing with thoughts of egg-laying, Han Soi’s absence, and the one-week deadline.

She was so distracted that her spoon kept slipping.

Clink...

Clink...

Bits of expensive temple soup splashed onto the pristine table.

Feng Yanshen, who was a total neat freak, watched the mess with a growing frown. His patience for clumsy behavior was zero.

Finally, he slammed his spoon onto his porcelain plate with a loud thud. freёweɓnovel.com

Yue Yue almost jumped out of her skin. She froze, a piece of vegetable hanging off her spoon.

"Come here," Feng Yanshen commanded in a cold and stern voice.

Having spent the last week being trained like a puppy by this man, Yue Yue’s body moved before her brain could even process the fear.

She stood up and walked over to him, standing in front of his chair with big, blinking eyes. "Yes, High Priest?"

Suddenly, he reached out and grabbed her wrist, yanking her forward. Yue Yue let out a small "Oof!" as she was hurled against his firm, stone-like chest.

She scrambled to pull away, her face heating up, but his large hand moved to the back of her head, pinning her in place.

"Don’t move," he whispered.

He leaned in, his nose brushing against the curve of her neck. He took a deep, slow breath, and Yue Yue felt her soul nearly leave her body. freewebnσvel.cøm

"You smell... strange," he murmured.

Yue Yue stiffened. She stopped breathing entirely. Oh no. Did he smell the egg? Is the Stealth Shroud broken?

Feng Yanshen narrowed his eyes, his nose moving closer to her collarbone.

He could smell a very faint, very specific scent. It wasn’t just the smell of hers but something else and definitely didn’t belong to the "delicate" girl in his arms.

"You smell like a snake spawn."

"I am a snake, High Priest," Yue Yue stuttered, trying to sound brave. "So I’m going to smell like a snake, right? Not smell like a bird, okay?"

"No," he whispered, his voice turning dangerous. "Not your smell. A wild snake. There is a scent of a wild male all over you."

Ding! Ding! Ding!

[SYSTEM ALERT: Host! Emergency! Divert his attention immediately! The High Priest’s spiritual senses are beginning to bypass the Shroud! If he finds any more clues, he will realize you are carrying a snake egg! MOVE NOW!]

The system’s frantic voice was like a siren in her head. Yue Yue panicked. Her brain went into overdrive. She had to say something...anything to make him stop sniffing her!

"Ah! A wild snake!" she blurted out, her voice a little too high and squeaky.

"Oh! Right! I... I was playing with a little garden snake beside the lake earlier! It must be his scent! It was so cute, I was just... petting it. Yeah. Petting a garden snake."

Feng Yanshen pulled back, his eyes flashing with a dark, angry light. "You were playing with a wild snake? By the lake?"

"Yes! He was very friendly!" she lied, her heart thumping.

Suddenly, the High Priest’s expression turned into something even more terrifying. "Is it your estrus period?" he asked bluntly.

Yue Yue’s face turned from red to purple. She wanted to slap him across his handsome, pale face.

Estrus period?! You blockhead! Even if I were in heat, do you think I’d go and flirt with a mindless, non-beastman snake in the bushes?! What do you take me for?!

Inside her head, she was screaming curses at him, but on the outside, she just stared at him with huge, watery eyes, looking like a victim of his bullshit.

But in his eyes her watery eyes were proof that he was right and she was guilty.

Feng Yanshen’s aura exploded with rage. The possessive villain in him couldn’t handle the thought of any other creature, even a mindless animal, touching what he considered his.

"You are not allowed to play with any wild snakes," he hissed, standing up so abruptly his chair fell over. "I don’t like anything touching you. Not a person, not a beast, nothing."

He looked at her one last time, his red eyes glowing with a warning. "If your estrus period is truly coming, I will arrange for a proper solution within the Temple. You are forbidden from touching anything outside again."

With a swirl of his white robes, he stormed out of the dining hall, leaving Yue Yue standing there alone and completely speechless.

"Proper solution?" she whispered to the empty room. Her legs felt weak. "Did he just... did he just imply that he would find a solution? Mind you! I have a husband!"

She slumped back into her chair, clutching her tiny stomach. "Baby, your daddy needs to hurry up and rescue us. This High Priest is officially a crazy person."

But what can your mother do? She is just a powerless snake. Don’t take after Mommy, right? Take after your father, who is such a hardworking person and strong Orc.

The High Priest didn’t just walk away; he marched straight to the main hall with a face so cold it could have turned the entire Holy Lake into a giant ice cube.

"Wei Han!" he barked.

The lead servant appeared instantly, bowing so low his forehead nearly touched the jade floor. "Yes, Your Highness? How may I serve you?"

"There are wild snakes in the garden," Feng Yanshen hissed, his red eyes flashing with a murderous light that was frankly overkill for a few garden reptiles.

Wei Han didn’t dare to look towards his master and only bowed more deeply.

"Kill them. All of them. I don’t want to see a single slithering thing in this Temple by sunset. If it has scales and no legs, it dies."

Wei Han froze. His brain short-circuited for a second. The snakes? The tiny, harmless celestial snakes that had lived in the garden for centuries?

What did those poor, tiny things do to get a death sentence from the most powerful man in the world? Did one of them trip him? Did they look at him in a wrong way?

"But... Your Highness," Wei Han stammered, "those are celestial garden snakes. They help keep the pests away and..."

"Did I stutter?" Feng Yanshen’s voice dropped to a bone-chilling whisper.

"No! No, Your Highness! At once!" Wei Han shouted, scurrying away before the Priest decided to turn him into an ice cube too.
