Chapter 117: Chapter 93: Poised for Action
"I agree! I’ll cooperate! I’ll tell you everything..." Li Rongyao’s nerve had been completely shattered. That, combined with his boss trying to have him killed to silence him, made him decide to throw all caution to the wind.
The middle-aged man with glasses smiled and said, "A pleasure to be working with you."
In truth, they had received orders from their superiors long ago. They had been secretly surveilling Li Rongyao and his associates for the past few days. After his wife flew back from Australia, she began furtively meeting with certain people and even acquired some unknown vials. They knew then that she was up to no good, and they also knew their opportunity had arrived.
If they hadn’t forced Li Rongyao to face reality, he might have stayed silent out of concern for his family.
But the moment Yin Muhua decided to make a lethal move, Li Rongyao’s psychological defenses were utterly shattered.
In reality, after Li Rongyao woke up, he had no idea that the forces behind Baisan Investment had suffered an unprecedentedly devastating blow. But if Yin Muhua hadn’t made a move against him, he would have chosen to remain tight-lipped.
This betrayal by a loved one drove Li Rongyao completely mad. He no longer cared about his son in Australia; whether the boy lived or died had become irrelevant.
After all, he was only forty-two and had assets worth hundreds of millions. As long as he had money, he could always have another son. How could he possibly be willing to die just like that?
...
Having dealt with the threat from thousands of miles away, Jiang Miao also secretly checked in on Li Rongyao’s situation. Discovering that someone was already monitoring him, Jiang Miao decided to let things run their course. After all, whether Li Rongyao lived or died, he no longer posed a threat to him or Hailufeng Company.
Thus, Jiang Miao returned to his daily work routine.
No one at the company, from top to bottom, knew that their respected and kind boss had made a major contribution to reducing the burden on Earth’s ecosystem in just three short days.
After all, the greenhouse gases produced annually by individuals like Li Rongyao, Edward, or David were likely more than an ordinary person could generate in a lifetime.
The jet fuel consumed by just one of their private jets on a single flight would be enough to cover an ordinary person’s living expenses for several years.
If there were such a thing as an "Environmental Guardian Award," Jiang Miao would definitely deserve one.
However, the confidential files Jiang Miao had sent out the night before last were now stirring up a massive storm around the world.
There was a lot of movement domestically as well. Although ordinary people couldn’t sense it, Jiang Miao, as the instigator, knew someone was in for a world of trouble the moment he saw a few of the morning’s news flashes.
He skimmed through them once, then put the matter out of his mind.
These events had little to do with Hailufeng Company, so there was no need to monitor them all day. Spending an hour each day checking on the movements of the various factions was sufficient.
As long as Hailufeng Company and his family weren’t involved, Jiang Miao couldn’t be bothered with the open and secret struggles between the major powers.
As it happened, the oil-tea seeds purchased by the procurement department had been arriving in batches over the past few days.
Among them was a batch of "Zhongke" large-fruit oil-tea seeds, which Jiang Miao had already subjected to batches of chemical and physical induction.
Inside the experimental zone, Jiang Miao, dressed in a protective suit and helmet, was examining the genetic mutations of one batch of oil-tea seeds.
About 99% of the genetic mutations tended to be deleterious, while only about 1% were beneficial. Furthermore, this 1% of beneficial mutations was of uneven quality, often mixed with deleterious ones.
Jiang Miao was long since used to this kind of outcome.
Using a pair of tweezers, he began picking out the seeds that had undergone purely beneficial mutations.
Of course, this so-called "purely beneficial mutation" was merely a human-defined concept.
For example, in terms of genetic mutation, a high oil content in the seeds was naturally considered beneficial by humans, while a low oil content was considered deleterious.
This batch contained nearly ten thousand seeds, yet in the end, he only managed to pick out a pitiful 13 seeds with purely beneficial mutations.
And among these 13 mutated seeds, not a single one was a variety that satisfied Jiang Miao completely.
He took out the next batch of induced-mutation seeds, opened the identification panel, and began selecting any potentially useful ones.
Although these selected seeds might not be perfect, they still held some value.
For instance, one of the beneficially mutated seeds was unremarkable in all other aspects, but its fruit had a seed content of around 76%. This made it extremely valuable. Even if it couldn’t be promoted as a direct cultivar, it could serve as raw material for crossbreeding.
By the end of the day, even Jiang Miao, with his eight-pack abs, felt his back ache, having sorted through 150,000 seeds in a row.
But the hard work was worth it.
Among those 150,000 seeds, he found a total of 249 mutated ones that had some cultivation value.
Among them, three mutated seeds showed outstanding performance in every aspect—at least, their genetic profiles did.
Jiang Miao gave these three mutated seeds special names:
Oil King 1, Oil King 2, and Oil King 3.
The name "Oil King" reflected his expectations for these oil-tea varieties. In the future, all of Hailufeng Company’s oil-tea varieties would use the "Oil King" name, forming the Oil King series.
The advantages of Oil King 1 were its rapid growth, dwarf stature, high disease resistance, high yield, numerous seeds, and medium oil quality.
Based on the data from its genetic expression, it could be inferred that under optimal conditions, Oil King 1 would only need about a year and a half to grow from a seedling to a height of about 1.8 meters, at which point it would begin to flower and bear fruit.
Based on current oil-tea tree planting densities, the theoretical yield of fresh fruit for Oil King 1 could reach a maximum of 450 kilograms per mu. Its fresh fruit would have a seed extraction rate of 52–63%, and the oil-tea seeds themselves would have an oil content of 53–55%.
