Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Does No One Care If He Lives or Dies Anymore?

Melanie Yates was furious as well. She knew better than anyone how her brother felt about Cassandra Lynch; she had even helped him test the waters with Cassandra before.

At the time, Cassandra had told her not to be ridiculous, but her face had flushed red in a coy display of feigned refusal.

So, Melanie had assumed Cassandra had feelings for her brother, too. Afterward, her brother had her deliver numerous gifts to Cassandra on his behalf.

Cassandra never turned any of them down, so Melanie grew to see her as a future sister-in-law, trusting her completely and feeling a close bond with her.

Who knew it was all just her brother’s wishful thinking? He was even almost manipulated into becoming the other man—a harasser!

Overcome with fury, Melanie Yates turned on Zane Lynch.

"Mr. Lynch, you’ve been listening for quite a while. Don’t you have anything to say? My brother might be a bit naive, but he’s not the type to pester someone relentlessly. If Cassandra Lynch had just given him a clear answer instead of ambiguously stringing him along, I’m certain he would never have kept bothering her."

"After all, my brother is handsome and rich. There are plenty of women who’d want to be his girlfriend. He had no reason to compete with a pack of other guys to be ’the other man,’ wracking his brain to please a woman who keeps a whole pond full of fish."

Melanie Yates’s words were incredibly blunt, stopping just short of pointing at Cassandra Lynch and calling her shameless.

She expected Zane Lynch to get angry, but instead, he just rubbed his nose in embarrassment. "This is indeed Cassandra’s fault. Ivan was a victim, too. When I get back, I’ll tell my parents exactly what happened and have them find time to have a good talk with Cassandra. Also, could you give me a list of all the gifts Ivan gave her? I’ll reimburse you for their cash value."

Melanie Yates snorted. "Who needs it? It’s not like our family can’t afford a few gifts."

Zane Lynch smiled good-naturedly. "That’s not what I meant at all, of course. I just feel terrible about it, and I’d like to offer it as a personal apology to your brother."

You can’t stay mad at a smiling face. With Zane Lynch taking such a humble stance, Melanie found it hard to keep giving him a hard time.

She pouted and muttered a few things under her breath, but she ultimately let the matter drop.

Mrs. Yates also found it hard to press the issue. She was very good friends with Zane Lynch’s mother, and her previously good impression of Cassandra had simply been an extension of that friendship.

But who could have imagined that someone who seemed so well-behaved, sensible, and understanding on the surface was actually such a two-faced person behind their back?

After this incident, Mrs. Yates’s opinion of Cassandra Lynch hit rock bottom. This made her even more worried about her dear friend, who was being kept in the dark.

They had all seen how the Lynch family doted on Cassandra. But she was clearly an ungrateful wolf that couldn’t be tamed!

"Zane, I know you’ve always been a good kid, and this won’t change my opinion of you. But you’ve seen Ivan’s situation. As for your cousin, there’s no way we can be close to her like we were before." freewebnøvel.coɱ

Zane Lynch didn’t feel pressured at all. In fact, he was even a little relieved. ’Good thing she isn’t my real cousin.’

He was just a bit puzzled. How had he never noticed that his cousin had gone off the rails? He’d even thought everything about her was perfect.

If Arabella Donovan knew what he was thinking right now, she would have told him that this was the legendary protagonist’s halo at work!

Any factor that was disadvantageous to the protagonist would be automatically eliminated. Just like Ivan Yates in the original plot, who, upon unexpectedly learning the truth, was hastily written off by a storyline where a car accident left him in a vegetative state.

But now, these people were like NPCs in a scripted game who had suddenly gained consciousness. Once the filters through which they viewed the female lead were removed and they saw her true colors, they would naturally no longer let her lead them by the nose.

"And forgive me for being blunt," Mrs. Yates continued, "but everyone has seen how you, your parents, and your sister have treated her all these years since she lost her parents. But she... You all should just be careful. You don’t want to raise someone else’s child only to find you’ve raised an enemy."

Hearing this, Eloise Donovan couldn’t help but turn to look at Zane Lynch, but she quickly looked away, making it impossible to guess what she was thinking from her expression.

After she finished, Mrs. Yates secretly watched Zane Lynch’s reaction, worried she might have been too blunt and offended him.

But to her surprise, Zane Lynch remained perfectly calm. He even nodded in agreement. "You’re absolutely right. I’ll be sure to relay your words."

Mrs. Yates finally breathed a sigh of relief. Zane Lynch’s refusal to defend Cassandra in the slightest did a great deal to soothe the Yatess’ frayed nerves.

Now that everything was out in the open, they couldn’t really press the matter further. Cassandra was certainly detestable, but strictly speaking, Ivan Yates wasn’t entirely blameless.

It was their own son who had been blind and foolish to begin with. If word got out, it would only bring shame upon their own family.

At this thought, Mrs. Yates shot her son a disdainful glare.

Ivan Yates: "..." ’Doesn’t anyone care if I live or die?’

After the Yatess had finished their confrontation, they made sure to thank Arabella Donovan once again.

The car accident had truly terrified Mrs. Yates. She grabbed hold of Arabella Donovan to confirm, "Miss Donovan, look at my son’s state. Does this count as him passing through that violent calamity?"

Arabella Donovan had been thoroughly enjoying the drama surrounding the Playboy protagonist. Now that business was calling, she quickly adopted a serious expression. "I can see that Mr. Yates’s eyes are clear, and the malevolent aura between his brows is gradually fading. It appears he has successfully passed this tribulation and is now out of danger. However..."

Mrs. Yates had just let out a sigh of relief upon hearing that Ivan had overcome the tribulation, but Arabella Donovan’s sudden "however" made her heart leap into her throat again.

"However what?"

"However, the reason Mr. Yates faced this tribulation is because his fate is susceptible to romantic entanglements. He became too deeply involved with someone whose aura is incompatible with his, which tangled his karma and damaged his personal fortune. If Mr. Yates can stay away from this ’rotten peach blossom’ from now on, he will be fine. But if he continues to interact with her, I cannot guarantee that this won’t happen all over again, coalescing into a ’peach blossom curse’."

Mrs. Yates’s face turned pale as she listened. She turned to her son and laid down the law. "Did you hear that? You are forbidden from seeing that woman again! Otherwise, you won’t have to wait for the calamity to strike, because I’ll break your legs first!"

Melanie Yates patted her chest in assurance. "Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll keep a close eye on him. I’ll make absolutely sure he doesn’t contact Cassandra again."

Crushed under the combined weight of his mother and sister, Ivan Yates was angry but dared not show it. After a long moment, he muttered sheepishly, "How would I dare contact her again? I don’t want her turning around and accusing me of harassment. This was bad enough. If it happened again, I think I’d have to pack my bags and flee the planet overnight." frёewebnoѵēl.com

"The first time I fall in love in my entire life, and this happens. It’s like I’m destined to be single forever. I’m heartbroken as it is, and you guys aren’t even comforting me..."

His words took Mrs. Yates aback for a moment, and then she grew worried. She stole a glance at Arabella Donovan, hesitating, as if she wanted to say something but held back.

Arabella Donovan raised an eyebrow. She glanced from Mrs. Yates to the withdrawn young man on the bed, who seemed to be shrinking into himself, and inspiration suddenly struck.

"Are you perhaps wondering where Mr. Yates’s true love is? And when she might appear?"
