Chapter 26: Chapter 26: What a Twist of Black and White
Ken Young lay in his hospital bed, listening to the old couple’s incessant and unreasonable demands. His already pale face grew even more grim.
Ken Young’s daughter, Georgia Young, stood by the hospital bed. Her face was cold as she tightly gripped her father’s uninjured hand, not saying a word.
Ken Young took a deep breath, barely managing to calm himself. "I’m not dropping the case. I will not drop it. If you’ve got the guts, go on and kill yourselves right here. Conveniently, we’re in a hospital. They’ll save you if they can, and if they can’t, you can go straight to the crematorium. When your son and daughter get out, they can come burn incense for you together."
Hearing this, the Hale couple’s eyes went wide with astonishment. They couldn’t believe their usually gentle, weak, and easily manipulated son-in-law had suddenly become so forceful.
Seeing that their threats weren’t working, the two exchanged a look. Mrs. Hale plopped right down on the floor and started wailing.
"Oh, the injustice! Everyone, come and be the judge! Who calls the police to get their own wife and brother-in-law thrown in jail? I only have this one son and one daughter! You’re basically trying to kill us! What sins did I commit to end up with such a heartless son-in-law?"
Mr. Hale sighed beside her, playing the part of a deeply wounded victim. "Are you seeing someone else? Even if you are, we can part on good terms. We won’t pester you. Why must you be so cruel?"
Mr. Hale let out another long sigh and continued to play the sympathy card. "Daisy has been your wife for over a decade. She raised a daughter for you, and she can never have children again. But now you want to drive her and her own brother to their doom. Her mother and I are old; we don’t have many years left. Are you really trying to kill all four of us?"
With a performance like that, anyone who didn’t know better would think Ken Young was some scumbag who used and then discarded his wife, now plotting her demise.
There were other patients and their families in the room. At these words, many of them started whispering amongst themselves.
Ken Young’s face was ashen, and he trembled with anger.
In contrast, Georgia Young, who had been coldly observing the farce, suddenly spoke up. "They were trying to kill my dad and me. Why can’t my dad call the police on them?"
"You shut up! What right does a child have to interrupt when adults are talking?" Mrs. Hale, who was in the middle of her tantrum on the floor, instantly glared, her eyes wide with rage, and jabbed a finger at Georgia Young as she yelled.
Mr. Hale also gave her a disapproving look, as if staring at a very ill-behaved child. "Georgia, that’s your own mother and your own uncle."
"So my dad and I are supposed to just let them hold a knife to us? Let them threaten and blackmail us? Let them force us to slave away to pay off my uncle’s gambling debts?"
The murmuring in the hospital room paused for a moment, then grew even louder.
Mr. and Mrs. Hale’s expressions flickered. Just as they were about to say something, Georgia Young cut them off.
"Don’t try to guilt-trip me. I’m not a child anymore; I know who’s right and who’s wrong. You just made it sound like she sacrificed so much by being married to my dad for over a decade, but is that really the truth?"
"In all these years, besides giving birth to me, has she ever looked after me or raised me for a single day? My dad paid for every single expense in this house. From the time I was little, it was always my dad and the nanny who took care of me. Everything I ate, wore, used, and played with was bought by my dad. Even my baths were given by a nanny my dad hired. And her money? It either went to her brother or to you."
"She never spent a single cent on my dad or me. Instead, she was constantly asking my dad for money and making him take care of you. Sometimes I even suspect that the only reason she doesn’t treat her brother’s kids better than me is that he doesn’t have any." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
His heart ached for his daughter, and Ken Young tried to stop her. "Georgia..."
But Georgia Young just smiled and squeezed his hand, whispering, "Dad, I’ve been holding these words in for a long time. If I don’t say them today, I probably won’t get another chance."
’Because starting today, she and her dad were going to cut ties with this family completely.’
Ken Young understood her unspoken meaning. Thinking of all the ways the Hale family had treated his daughter over the years, he gritted his teeth and didn’t try to stop her again.
"I may not be old, but I still know that if you have a child, you have to raise them. But your precious son asked my dad for money for school, asked my dad for money when he was short on living expenses, asked my dad for money to go traveling, asked my dad for money when he wanted to get married, and now that he’s racked up a mountain of gambling debt, he’s still asking my dad for money! He even wanted my dad to co-sign on a high-interest loan to pay it off for him. Is he my dad’s son, or is he yours?"
"You little bitch, you’re talking nonsense! I’m going to rip your mouth off!" Mrs. Hale scrambled up from the floor and immediately rushed over to grab at Georgia Young.
Ken Young’s expression changed. He instinctively tried to get up to shield his daughter.
Grant and the others had been watching the show for a while. Seeing that a fight was about to break out, they hurried forward to block her.
Suddenly blocked by several strange men, Mrs. Hale was startled. "Who are you? What are you doing, stopping me? Help, perverts!"
Grant and the others, having been baselessly accused of harassment: "..."
Georgia Young and her father were also startled to see so many people suddenly run in, but she quickly calmed down and continued, "It’s a fact that they threatened my dad and me with a knife when they couldn’t get money. It’s also a fact that they flew into a rage and stabbed at us with that knife after we refused. They were arrested because they broke the law and brought it on themselves. It has nothing to do with my dad."
"If you feel so wronged, why don’t you go make a scene at the police station? You came here to harass my dad, the victim, just because you think he’s good-natured and an easy target, right? Well, let me tell you, as of today, we have absolutely nothing to do with your family. They are all going to prison."
Ken Young hugged his daughter, whose face was flushed and body was trembling slightly from agitation. His own expression was colder than it had ever been. "What Georgia said is what I mean. The two of them broke the law, and they will be sentenced accordingly. After this, I’m divorcing Daisy Hale. From now on, Georgia and I will have nothing to do with your family—not even a penny’s worth of connection. If you dare bother us again, I’ll call the police. We’ll see if all four of you want to have a family reunion in there."
Hearing this, Mr. and Mrs. Hale were horrified. Just as they were about to cause more trouble, a voice suddenly called from outside the door, "The police are here."
The couple’s faces changed drastically. Thinking Ken Young had really called the police, they turned and ran.
As they reached the door, they didn’t forget to toss out a weak threat, trying to sound tough. "You just wait! We’ll be back!"
After Mr. and Mrs. Hale left, everyone in the room waited for a while, but the so-called police never arrived. Instead, the four members of the Donovan family, who had been secretly enjoying the show, emerged.
It turned out that the "The police are here" line was a quick-witted idea from Arabella Donovan. Because the scene was so chaotic, it had actually scared the two of them away.
Ken Young let out a sigh of relief and patted his daughter’s hand reassuringly. "Don’t be afraid. These are my colleagues from the film crew. Thank you all so much for your help just now. I’m sorry you had to see that."
