Chapter 29: Chapter 29: The River

Riven tightly gripped the devil slayer’s body with all his might as the devil slayer lunged forward. Their bodies swayed left and right threatening to throw them off.

But he didn’t command him to slow down because getting as far away from here was best for them. He glanced at Ayala whose body was swaying uncontrollably.

He whispered into her ears.

"Grip tightly."

Ayala nodded and gripped the back of the devil slayer tightly.

As the devil slayer kept charging forward, he turned his head around and looked behind him in confusion. The glowing particles near the hole were still visible.

His gaze lingered on the devil slayer as he thought to himself.

"What the hell just happened?"

When the blue aura engulfing the devil slayer’s body touched the black roots, it rapidly expanded. The roots just turned into glowing black particles.

But why? Why did the black roots turn into black particles when the blue aura touched the black roots?

What exactly was that blue aura that expanded and destroyed the black roots? He had no idea.

That is when he remembered something. The whisper of the system... it told him that the devil slayer wolf had awakened its dormant power and used something called purification.

He quickly scrolled through the subject’s tab, only stopping when he found the devil slayer wolf’s name. He focused on it, and all the details flashed before his eyes.

(Name: Devil Slayer Wolf

Level: 40

Abilities:

1.Purification

Description:

It destroys the weakened energy of the terrifying horrors born during the age of dominance.)

Riven’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the description of the ability Purification...

This ability proved two things. The first was that those roots were either the weakened energy of the devils of the desert or created from those energies.

The second thing was that the devils of the desert were born during the age of dominance. He had no idea what the age of dominance meant.

But he was sure of one thing... he had to avoid the horrors born during the age of dominance.

If the age of dominance had ended a long time ago then that meant the horror born during that time would be very powerful and their level would be very high.

Why? Because these ancient horrors had a long time to grow.

The wolf came to a sudden halt. Riven looked in front of him and he blinked a couple of times in shock.

A massive river overflowing with water was in front of him. This wasn’t all... near the river there was countless small grass and dozens of massive trees scattered across them.

But the distance between each tree was massive. Compared to a forest, the number of trees here was almost nothing.

After all... they were still in the desert. The only reason there was a sign of life was that they were near the river. If there was no river then this place would be barren like the remaining desert.

Ayala, who was beside him, got off the wolf and very slowly walked towards the river. Seeing this, Riven asked.

"Where are you going?"

"To drink some water."

"If you’re thirsty then drink from bottles stored in your inventory. Why go to the river?"

"I want to drink some fresh water. You should join me too, mister."

Riven didn’t immediately get off. He looked around him... There didn’t seem to be any danger. Maybe it was okay to get off... maybe it wasn’t and it was a foolish decision.

But he needed to go to the river in order to fill the empty bottles with water.

Riven thought for a moment and got off. He dragged his exhausted body to the river. As he walked towards the river, he saw some movement in a certain patch of the river. He saw a school of fish swimming near the shore of the river.

For the first time since entering Astrionis... he felt envy. He wanted to eat the fish since he hadn’t had a proper meal in a long time.

The only problem was that he could barely walk due to low mana reserves. If his mana reserves were high then he could have caught a few fish easily.

But he didn’t have to do it himself... when he had subjects under his command.

Riven turned towards his subject and said.

"Kill a few fish and bring them back."

The Devil Slayer didn’t say a word instead he lunged towards the river. As the devil slayer got closer and closer to the river. Ayala’s voice resounded through his ears, carrying a sense of urgency.

"Tell the wolf to stop!"

"Why? It’s just a fish, he can easily kill the fish. It will be easy meat."

"Danger is approaching! Tell him to stop if you don’t want him to be crippled."

The moment Riven heard this, his eyes narrowed but he didn’t immediately command the devil slayer to stop. Instead stared at the river where the fish was and that is when he saw it. A large shadow was rapidly closing in on the fish.

That could be dangerous. So mentally issued a command.

"Stop."

In an instant, the devil slayer halted his steps, and the moment he did. A massive fish with sharp fangs and as large as a school bus leaped out of the water with the fish in its mouth and landed back in the water.

Then the fish swam away.

Riven heaved a sigh of relief.

If he had ignored Ayala’s warning since the wolf had entered the water to hunt... then he would have gotten seriously injured and with how low his mana was — healing him would be almost impossible.

As he was lost in his own thoughts, Ayala who was beside him nudged him using her arms. Riven glanced at her and asked

"What? Is there another danger?"

She didn’t say a word , instead, she pointed in a certain direction and said.

"Mister... look there."

Riven turned his head around and he just froze. Not in fear, not in shock but in pure disbelief.

"What is that... Why is it here?"
