Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Ideals (1)
Riven’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the source of the sound. There was a massive eagle with fur as black as coal itself, tearing up a carcass with its massive beak as it glared at them.
So this was the nest of an eagle after all but not of the eagle that carried them here instead of the nest of a wild eagle.
Suddenly, the massive black eagle turned towards them, locking on with its ice-cold eyes. Then the eagle roared.
"CroCro!!!CroCro!!!"
Riven didn’t panic instead his gaze lingered on this eagle for a heartbeat and then he mumbled
"Scan."
Words flashed before his eyes.
(Name: Demon Eagle
Level: 15)
So this wild eagle’s level was lower than the pet eagle of the woman. This was great since they might not have to do anything. The woman’s eagle might be able to take care of it on its own.
He turned towards the woman and said.
"Tell your eagle to kill it."
The woman turned towards the eagle that carried them here and whispered something into its ear. The eagle howled back and the woman’s expression darkened instantly.
The woman turned towards them and said
"He won’t fight on our behalf."
Riven’s eyes widened in disbelief... not because of the fact that the eagle won’t fight for them but the fact that the woman could understand what a monster was saying.
Did that mean she could take on a living being regardless of the language barrier? It was likely proven by the fact she could communicate with the eagle.
Suddenly, the eagle picked up a large boulder with its strong beak and shot it towards them like a bullet. Riven pushed Ayala to the side and he jumped, dodging the incoming attack.
The boulder slammed onto the place where they were standing and broke into countless small fragments that shot outward.
The black eagle didn’t stop; instead, it picked up more boulders and shot them not towards Ayala, not towards the woman but instead towards him.
He jumped to his right evading the incoming attack but the black eagle kept throwing boulders at him. Riven jumped left to right and then right to left. Each time he dodged the attack, the boulder slammed onto the ground and exploded into countless small fragments of rock.
As he kept dodging, he saw that the eagle that had carried them was just standing there staring at the black eagle attacking them. Not doing anything.
Riven glared at the black eagle and cursed loudly
"Damn it! Make your pet obey you!"
The woman finally snapped and shouted back.
"How many times do I have to tell you? He is not my pet! He is a friend who is grateful to me for saving his life! Besides, unlike a certain someone, I don’t take the freedom of living beings away!"
As they were talking, the massive black eagle started to flap its wings up and down creating a strong gust of wind in the process as it soared high into the cave. The ceiling was tall enough for it to fly.
After it ascended high enough, it lunged towards him. Riven’s head snapped to Ayala and he shouted.
"Buff us!"
"I can’t, Mister! I am too low on mana!"
"Damn it!"
Left with no choice, Riven created two images of a spear in his hand. Then he channeled mana into his palms and blue engulfed his two palms. It began to take the shape of something.
A moment later, a spear had manifested in each of his palms.
Riven threw one of the spears towards the approaching eagle. It didn’t miss; instead, it passed through the flesh of the black eagle. Blood poured out from its wound and then to the ground.
This wasn’t all the eagle’s wingbeats became uneven, forcing it into a slower, labored flight. Riven quickly threw another spear and this time, it struck one of its wings.
The spears lodged in the eagle’s body became smaller and smaller as it slowly started to dissolve into a blue aura. He saw some of its feathers becoming blue.
The black eagle roared as its flight became chaotic and unstable. It moved up then down and back up again in an instant.
Before anyone could react, the black eagle plunged downward and slammed onto the ground with a loud thud. Pieces of large rock shot upwards as dust filled the air.
Riven didn’t waste time, he manifested another spear and ran as fast as his legs allowed towards the black eagle. When he was close enough, he drove his other spear into the body of the black eagle.
In an instant, the spear started to dissolve into a blue aura which started to spread throughout its body. Its fur slowly started to turn blue and its pupils also turned blue.
The creature’s body twitched violently as its entire body began to glow brightly.
His lips curled upwards slightly.
"A subject that can fly will be very useful."
With a subject that can fly, he would be able to cross distances very quickly and find things very quickly. Not only that, but he would also be able to avoid danger on the ground by flying.
Of course, there could be danger in the sky too but the most important thing was that he would have more options.
A heartbeat later, the system whispered into his ears.
(You have se...)
However, the whisper of the system was cut off before it could finish. He had no idea why but when he looked beside him — a frown formed on his forehead.
The woman was standing near the head of the eagle wielding a sword engulfed in a white aura. The sword was stuck between the eyes of the eagle.
White aura from the sword swept into the black eagle’s body, devouring the blue aura spreading across its body in an instant. The blue aura completely disappeared from it, as if it hadn’t existed in the first place.
Then its entire body began to disappear into countless glowing white particles. The woman turned towards Riven and said her voice was as cold as ice itself.
"As long as I am here... you won’t be able to take the freedom of any living away."
