Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Flying into danger
Riven didn’t say a word; instead, he locked his gaze on the eagle before him and mumbled.
"Scan"
The system whispered into his ears.
(The level difference is too high!)
(Scan failed!)
Riven’s eyes narrowed. This was the first time the scan had failed, and scans only failed when the level of the creature attempting to scan was at least 30 levels higher than the scanner’s.
That meant this eagle’s level was at least 33... a level 33 creature could easily kill him but why was such a strong monster obeying her?
Riven’s gaze lingered on the eagle for a heartbeat then he turned towards the woman sitting on its back and asked.
"Is this your pet?"
If that was the case... the power of the woman granted by her class could have something to do with taming monsters. That would make her very dangerous since who knew how many powerful creatures she had tamed?
The woman glared at him, hostility clearly visible in her eyes, and said.
"Of course not. Unlike a certain someone I value the freedom of living beings."
Riven frowned and asked.
"Then why is it listening to your command?"
The woman replied coldly.
"Someone who doesn’t understand the value of freedom and strips away the freedom of living beings doesn’t need to know."
Riven’s frown deepened. Everything that she said pointed to the fact that she knew about the mechanics of his powers.
But the question was... how did she know? He didn’t share with anyone the basis of his power.
Did she possess the ability to read minds? That was the only explanation and even if she had, he could do nothing since he needed her to survive.
Riven didn’t dwell on this matter for long since now all that mattered was staying alive. He walked towards the massive eagle slowly.
However, before stepping onto the eagle’s back, he halted his steps and his gaze swept across all his subjects.
His subjects needed to run away since Riven had no idea where the eagle was going to take them but he knew one thing. The eagle was very fast and his Subjects won’t be able to follow him.
He didn’t want them to die since it would directly affect his strength. So he mentally commanded.
"Stay together and run."
The moment he issued this command, all his subjects broke away from the defensive formation and ran in a random direction together.
When this happened, the elves didn’t attack his subjects, anyone. Instead, the elves continued attacking the tent, and the moment the formation was broken, there was nothing to block wave after wave of arrows.
The arrows slammed into the tent and passed through it effortlessly, creating countless holes in the process.
The entire structure of the tent was destroyed in an instant and the entire tent collapsed, leaving only rubble in the aftermath.
His gaze lingered on the rubble... The tent was utterly destroyed.
This wasn’t all... the elves finally noticed them. Before they could react, wave after wave of arrows flew towards them, covering a large distance in a heartbeat.
The elves let out a war roar and the elves with melee weapons also lunged towards them.
In response, the eagle flapped its wings creating a strong gust of wind that sent the arrows charging towards him flying backwards. Some flew backwards while some landed on the ground.
The strong gust of wind also slowed down the advancing melee fighters, buying them more time.
The woman shouted, her voice resounding through his ears.
"Now get one! We don’t have much time!"
They didn’t say a word Ayala tried to get on the eagle’s back but the moment her feet touched its majestic feathers. The eagle shook its body violently until she fell off its back.
The eagle glared at them with its bloodlusty eyes almost like it wanted to eat them alive.
Riven glared at the eagle then at the woman and shouted.
"What’s the damn problem?"
The woman replied in frustration.
"It seems like he doesn’t like you guys."
Riven gritted his teeth and cursed her.
"Stop screwing around! Just tell us that you are toying with us and have no intention to save us!"
Ayala who was silent till now finally spoke and said.
"Miss if you don’t want to take us with you then just say so. We will have to think about something else."
The woman didn’t say a word; instead, she rubbed the head of the eagle, grabbing the attention of the eagle. She moved closer to its ears and whispered.
"They are the ones who saved my life. Let them sit on your back for me... please."
The eagle calmed down and then stared at them again but this time it no longer viewed them with those hostile eyes.
The woman calmly said.
"You can get on now."
Riven didn’t say a word, instead, he was just about to get on the eagle’s back but from the corner of his eye, he saw something that made his heart drop.
Ayala was looking at the tent with a mortified expression. She took a few steps towards the tent but before, she could rush towards the tent — he grabbed her by the arm, stopping her, and asked.
"What the hell? Going there is suicide!"
Ayala tried to break free and said.
"Rabbolt is still at the tent mister! I need to save him!"
"What! Why didn’t you take him with you when going out?"
"I had forgotten about him in panic!"
Riven looked at the ruins of the tent. There was no way that her pet was still alive. Even if it was still alive... they didn’t have time to save it.
"We don’t have time to rescue him! We need to leave right now!"
"But..."
Before Ayala could finish her words, Riven dragged her to the back of the eagle with him. The moment they got on the eagle’s back... the war cries of the elves resounded through their ears.
"Don’t let the humans escape! They will make perfect test subjects!"
"We can also make them our pets."
"But their potential as test subjects is greater."
"Ascended Aerion wants them alive so capture them alive!
The woman roared, her voice cutting through chaos.
"Fly! Get us out of here!"
The eagle roared and it started to flap its wings with all its might creating a very strong gust of wind in the process which threw all the elves below them off balance.
They kept ascending to the sky until the elves below them appeared as small white dots. But the danger wasn’t gone... the elves kept shooting wave after wave of arrows.
Most of the arrows didn’t reach high enough to hit the eagle but a few that did reach the required height, slammed into the eagle’s body getting them stuck between its skin.
Just then, the eagle roared and began to fly towards the very thing that they were trying to escape from at incredible speed.
The eagle was flying towards the towering wall of sand... the same sandstorm that could burn them to death.
