Chapter 19: Step Aside.

The man gulped; he lifted his gaze lightly. "I-I don’t know much..."

"Why did you kidnap the kids?" Kael crossed his arms and looked right into the man’s eyes.

The man took a deep breath, composing himself before continuing. "We captured kids because the high priest said it was an order of the god, and he, alongside the kids, is inside the next room." He pointed towards the door from where they came.

Kael squinted his eyes as his gaze lingered on the door. There was a mere amount of energy coming out through that door. "Something’s taking place in there which is consuming mana."

He didn’t say anything as he walked past everyone present in there and made his way towards the door.

When he entered, his steps remained static. He noticed that there were multiple mana circles made out of ashes on the floor, and unconscious kids were kept inside each circle.

He shifted his gaze towards the front, and a man was standing next to a slab on which multiple lit candles were kept.

That man had a long white beard, dressed in an all-black robe with golden embroidery. He was mumbling something as he kept making his hands produce mana circles next to the slab.

Kael frowned as a thought lingered inside his mind. "That man is trying to summon something."

He walked towards the man, but before he could even keep a step forward, a sword stopped right next to his throat. His gaze shifted towards the person to whom that sword belonged.

"Halt, and explain yourself why you’re here." A man dressed in armour from top to bottom said out loud. His armour carried an emblem of a staff surrounded by holy power embroidered across the front.

Kael studied him for a while, and then he let his mana escape through his body. His mana wrapped around the man’s sword completely, making it difficult for him to keep a hold of it.

"I don’t talk to preys."

The man frowned as a bead of sweat appeared on his temple.

He closed his eyes, focusing his aura around the sword. The energy surged, wrapping the blade in power strong enough to cleave through Kael’s mana itself.

He instantly took a few steps back, creating a significant amount of distance between them.

A thought appeared in his mind as his grip tightened onto the hilt. "This man is dangerous."

Kael’s gaze lingered on the man for a while, which was interrupted by a smirk on his face.

He started walking towards the man, and his steps remained steady. "It would be better for you if you took your leave."

"It’s not me who’s in the wrong, but you."

The man’s morale didn’t waver; his eyes remained fixed on Kael. "What’s he talking about? We, the holy order, are in the wrong?"

A low chuckle escaped through his mouth as he covered his mouth with the back of his hand. "Ah, sorry." He said, his laughter refusing to die down.

He composed himself for a while as he muttered. "You, a nobody, are trying to say that the goddess’s words are wrong?" Then again, he broke down into laughter.

Kael remained standing there as he crossed his arms. His expression remained as it always did, calm, the same stoic face which he never let slip.

"A goddess’s words, huh?"

He narrowed his eyes and started walking towards the man again. "You say that it’s the words of a goddess, huh?"

"Does that goddess of yours tell you to kidnap little kids, and do such a deed with them?"

His gaze lingered on the kids who lay unconscious on the floor. "I don’t care about this matter at all. But you people kidnapped my child. Whether the goddess you pray to drives you toward good or evil means nothing to me. When it comes to my family... I alone will decide."

Mana shot out through Kael’s body immediately, making its way toward the man with desperate haste.

The mana surrounded the area next to the man, circling him entirely.

Waves of mana kept flowing towards him, making it difficult for him to even move freely.

He lifted his hand, placed it in front of his face in a desperate attempt to block the waves, but he failed miserably.

His teeth clenched, his robe billowed freely in the air, and his grip on the ground faltered, and slowly, he began to slide backwards.

An amused smirk appeared on Kael’s face as a thought appeared in his mind. "This man is clearly stronger than those I’ve met since returning to the world. But too bad for him, he must die, for he dared to stand with those who laid hands on my child."

The man still kept resisting, and a scream left his mouth. "AHHHH!!!"

His blue aura burst forth, surging through his body as it fought against Kael’s mana. But the struggle was futile, the aura faltered, and it got overwhelmed beneath the crushing waves of Kael’s power. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Kael’s mana ceased its flow, then in an instant recoiled back into his body.

"Your spirit as a warrior is tremendous."

He paused, locking eyes with the man. "I’ll grant you one chance to strike for my head. If you succeed, you live. If you fail... You already know what will happen to you."

The man’s sight shifted towards his sword, and a thought coiled inside his mind. "I might not get a chance like this again... I should go for it."

His grip tightened onto the hilt as he took a deep breath in. His gaze turned towards Kael, who was standing there with his arms crossed.
